I know the scoop

I used to work for Cox in Nebraska as a high speed data technician. Basicially you need a new line of shielded RG6 from the outside tap to the house. It needs to be replaced every two years and check periodically for squirrels chewing the line. Second there needs to be a direct line (no more than one splitter) from the house box to the modem at your computer. Persistent network problems indicate that perhaps the attenuators on the cable network need to be checked and upgraded. Speed also has a lot to do with how far away from the big house you are. So if you drive a long way to pay your cable bill, chances are your speed is lessened. Also make sure that if the line is split in the house that you are using the latest and greatest splitters that you have obtained from Cox. The ones you get at a retailer will not fit the bill. One more thing, have them put booties on the line connectors so water, wind, and other weather will not interfere with your service. If it still sucks, get DSL/

Re: I know the scoop

I find plactics post moronic. Cox ONLY deals with CABLE broadband... not DSL in rhode island. Verizon is in charge of the terrible DSL in RI

What a surprise? Cuz I'm all thumbs up 4 Cox!

I have had excellent service from Cox in Nebraska. Excellent! Super fast! When I do have a problem and believe me, nothing is problem free in this world because that's life... you live and learn! However, with Cox HSI in Omaha, of all the times I have called just to ask questions and get technical information, I am amazed at how helpful they are. I even like the voice on their automated service here because it sounds like they do care! I have had only one problem with just one level 2 tech that was her problem and not Cox's. She had an attitude. Believe me, I have moved 3 times in 6 months and each time I moved, it has gone incredible smooth regarding Cox and with their customer service! I only got attitude once out of all the times I have talked to them due to moving so many times. I'm surprised, because I have had many internet services. I've tried them all it seems like. Cox has been the best so far!

Re: What a surprise? Cuz I'm all thumbs up 4 Cox!

What kind of fantasies are you having about Cox? The more and more I learn about them the more disapointed I am with them. The tech that swapped my modem out under warranty replaced it with a used one that has been opened up. When he called me to ask me how things were going I told him the speed has dropped even more and that he gave me a used modem. He informed me that they are told to replace warranty modems with used modems...

Thought I would update

I thought I would update my review. I did forget to mention
that I have all new line strung from the pole and a dedicated feed from the pole. I still have some issues. I know what the problem is but they will not deal with it. I know my NIU box is not up to par. I am sharing that with my neighbor as we both have all 3 digital services. Every time it rains my ping time to my gateway runs about 3000ms and my phone service gets real crappy. I get a lot of clicking noise, static, and you can barely hear the person that I talk to. My neighbors have the same problems. Cox will not change the NIU unless if it goes out completely.

Re: Thought I would update

I am in RI and have COX. We just moved here about 3 months ago. The first 4 or 5 weeks was fine. About the 5th or 6th week, I started having major problems. Huge amounts of packet loss originating from cox routers and speeds slower than dialup.

Cox finally came out last week and replaced the modem (probably with a used one), the tech would not respond to my questions regarding the packet loss, he kept dancing around the question with off-topic replies.

Before he left he ran a speed test and it came back at 700/130, I was happy just to be above 50 down.

He was gone no longer than 20 minutes when my speed dropped back down to under 50kbps.

I immediately called them back and sat on hold for 2 hours.
I have kept a log of all my speed tests, line quality tests, tracert's and pings in MS Word. The level 2 guy asked me to send him my log, so I did. He informed me he would send it up to the NOC and have them evaluate it.

After 3 days, my service quality had not improved so I called Cox support back. They informed me that he NOC had commented on my logs and determined there was nothing wrong with my line, that my results were due to Cox deprioritizing pings due to the worms.

That was an illogical answer since the speed tests do not rely on ICMP packets.

I also inquired how they can do any type of network troubleshooting if ICMP is deprioritized so much that whenever anyone has some type of packet loss, they immediately associate it with the deprioritization, since they cannot actually troubleshoot it.

I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau this evening, and I plan on filing a formal complaint with my states Attorney General's office.

If everyone that is experiencing these difficulties takes 20 minutes to file complaints with both the bbb (»www.bbb.org) and with their states attorney General, something might actually get resolved.

Here is the router that is 3 hops away from me. It has been on the bad router list for 3 months.

»/badrouters/68.9.14.6

These are my latest speed tests
===============================
2003-09-03 21:46:35 Speed test (ec) 57/83 kbps
2003-09-04 14:24:50 Speed test (ec) 39/225 kbps
2003-09-05 15:12:25 Speed test (ec) 509/233 kbps
2003-09-07 00:21:26 Speed test (dslreports-west1.speakeas) 138/105 kbps

I cannot even get DSL in my area, cox is the ONLY player, unless I want dialup.

Re: Thought I would update

A couple of things that you might want to look at? How many splitters are you going thru until you get to the modem? The more splitters you go thru the more problems you will have. How old are you cable lines? Are you in a multi dwelling unit? The reason I ask about the cable lines is I had bad lines. It took them 5 months to realize that I should have had newer lines. As for living in a multi dwelling unit. You may be sharing the junction box with everybody else in the building. Also have you checked you signal levels for you modem. The signal levels can tell if you are having a problem. If you do not know how to do this. Let us know what OS system you are using and the modem you are using?

Re: Thought I would update

I live in a single family house. There is only one splitter (I put it in myself), the modem is a brand new terayon modem.

The last 2 days my speed has been amazing (2000/200), I am wondering if they did something or if the gods of internet speed have simply decided to give me grace.

somebody nobody

@cox.net

if your neighbors are having the same issue, why is it something wrong in your house????? through methods of troubleshooting, that indicates to me that it is a plant problem, not a house issue. find a competent HSI tech and tell him to have a maint tech out on the job. test ping and all that good stuff off the plant.........

cox sucks, cox sucks cox sucks

your problems are most likely internal to cox.. the cox internal routers to you .. your probably fine .. proving this to cox with pings (both directions in and out). cox's response is that sometimes pings are turned off when traffic gets busy.. well that just happens to be when i get no service from cox .. they must shut off my internet connection too .. coxes response is to block pings to my computer..i can no longer ping cox routers .. cus this is clear evidence that yes.. solid pings to my first 2 hops and to the DNS server .. but no.. no pings to internet.. no access to internet.. etc.. well with pings u can clearly see where the problem is.. internal to cox.. so .. they block the pings.. they get a F minus for customer service and support.. and their tech dept exists to blow off the customers .. they say they cant do anything till you reformat all your computers.. tear apart your lan etc.. all when u got solid pings to router 2 hops from you .. dsl reports shows the pings incoming.. router losses in RI are rediculous.. well that's a simple cause too.. where i live cox is the ONLY high speed option.. that's why they dont care about the customer here.. i dropped cox cable tv for dish tv.. and when anything besides cox high speed comes along cox is gone too.. cox really really sucks.. blocking my pings was the last damn straw... i wouldn be here bitching if i could be online playing games.. but.. cox sure fixed that.. their service blows.. and the people they got 20 states away dont help worth a damn with my RI problems.. they just tell me to reformat all 3 computers on my lan.. cus they must all have the same problem.. (when the weather is dry the problem goes away) cox has some crap routers.. and they dont care.. or they dont have a clue .. cox 2nd teir tech support does more damage to cox cable co .. than they do good.. fire them all.. and get people who will help.. or tell you where to get help.. instead of giving you excuses and telling you to reformat cus they dont have a damn clue. with cox u get excuses not results

fix your routers cox

ya your all sitting around the coffee laughing your butts off at another screwed customer .. put another chalk mark by your phone

if you got problems with cox.. and u can still ping do a trace route to www.yahoo.com .. get the ip's along the way.. do a ping -t ipnumber .. to monitor continuous pings to several computers between you and the internet.. you will see how screwed cox is .. unless they blocked your pings too.. if you ping fine to your dns and your gateway.. or second hop .. your house is fine.. cox is screwing you .. just like they screw me

cox blows.. here i am bitching again.. instead of using the internet i pay for horrible horrible packet losses

coxes solution.. not to fix the packet loss.. instead they block pings.. this is almost funny.. nice way to run a business.. lucky your a monopoly or you would be in a bread line somewhere

ya i'm pissed.. everytime i think of cox service i'm pissed

anyone that can get other than cox high speed internet
anyone that works at another isp.. RI is ripe for new customers.. please open up shop here at 2x the price

one last time .. cox blows.. they know it.. and they blow smoke up your butt rather than help you.. cus they cant help you.. they work in idaho or some western state.. you cante even get a RI rep on teh phone to fix the damn ri routers

in my experience the problems have never been in the house.. (cept once cus they put an attinuator on my line that killed my signal.. that one was in the house- .. now all my problems .. and regular ones.. (every time it rains) are coxes routers in my path to the internet

god cox blows

@asu.edu

you don't understand networking

I work for the Data Communications department at Arizona State University. we block pings here too (ICMP) and I'm unable to traceroute to www.yahoo.com from my Windows XP machine. This is due to all of the exploits out there, certain rules were implemented so the router CPU's don't all goto 100%, effectively shutting down the router. However, I am able to traceroute from one of our linux boxes here perfectly fine, so part of it comes down to Windows crappy implentation of the TCP/IP stack. Once again, the ping blocking is for your own good. A worm will only spread to hosts it can ping. I wish you people wouldn't run your mouth about that which you don't understand.

Re: you don't understand networking

Actually, there are plenty of people who know a lot about networking who have complained about their ICMP blocking policy. Its especially annoying when Cox reps tell people to ping a site and, well, they can't...

Blocking ICMP helps, but it causes plenty of problems and really doesn't solve the actual problem. Its a quick fix and should only be used temporarily.

Re: you don't understand networking

I live in Lincoln, RI and I am a heavy online gamer.
I relie on quality connections, and Cox offers me good pings but terrible lag, and packet loss.. WTF!
When I called tech support.. same ol' story, lines test ok, reset modem and turn off PC.. that doesnt help.
I call back 2 days later and finally get a good tech support and he sees my packet loss while monitoring my connection. he reprovisions me, I have new IP address and my packet loss is gone.. yippee..
