| Ameritech is impossible My DSL diary is long and complicated. Ordered the $30 per month deal and quickly got the modem. Unfortunately the NIC was bad. Fast forward two weeks and couldn't get it going. Tried sticking filters throughout the house and on the alarm system but didn't work. DSL techs said the phone guys need to do work, then the DSL guys could come out again, then alarm guys would need to do work. I've burnt countless hours on the phone with techs only to find out that they cannot get into my house because we've got the old fours wires and four screws...guess who is getting screwed! | |

| Re: Ameritech is impossible I have had the same trouble with my DSL. It works about 50% of the time but even when it does work I get at 310 download. I have had the phone guy come over twice and he said it has to do with our phone lines being noisy and to call ameritech. Ameritech came out and said our lines were fine. I can't figure out what the problem is and am very frustrated. anyone have any ideas? | |

| It sounds to me like you did not do your homework concerning your house wiring. If you have an alarm system, it is normally *in series* with your phone line so that it can send a help message regardless of any phones that might be off the hook in the house. Therefore, you cannot share DSL on this same line, and the filters will not work. However, you do not need to get a second phone line, just get a POTS/DSL splitter. It will split the line into a normal phone line to go to your house/alarm/phones. There will also be a dataline for your DSL. If you use a splitter, then you don't need any of the filters. I got mine on ebay for $13. | |

| WORKING GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! I have had Ameritech DSL for over six months now and it has never gone down while I have been online. The browsing speed is faster than my brother-in-law's cable modem from AT&T. I have the usual 768/128 package and love it. I have successfully converted some of my friends over to dsl ever since they saw mine work. I now have a router and connect multiple pc's. It's a SNAP! | |

| ordering dsl and customer choices As a Customer Service Rep with SBC I truly back our DSL 100% for two reasons Security and Realibility. Living in Columbus seeing cable modem and high speed satellite avail in some areas DSL is still the best bet. We are the only ones who are Federally regulated. Our line repairs must be done in a timely manner. Cable service in our area for example your cable goes out on a friday morning which it did,we finially got cable back on teusday the following week. A moving van knocked down the hanging cable three streets over. SO it took five days to come out and splice or replace the cable. PUCO guidelines for SBC repairs for no dial tone 93% of the time took less than twenty four hours. Surpassing the standard of 90%. | |

| i love Cable in my opinion DSL stinks...
1) high prices for slower than cable speeds
2) uses phone lines
my cable, Optimum Online, has higher speeds than any other ISP (normally 1500 down/800 up on bad days. 3000 down/900 up on good days). installation was very fast and very easy, and tech support was very helpful if you called them with an installation question. they gave you everything you needed at once.
my family bought it from The Wiz, and took it home and installed it the same night. worked as soon as it was setup. its able to be networked at home without restrictions, and i havent had a problem since, except an occassional connection drop, but thats due to my home network. overall, if you can get OOL try it out and youll love it

| Few complaints I like the service... only four complaints are:
1) Can't hold a damn IP for more than a few days (local cable used to hold it for months at a time)... not that bad since I have MyDynDNS anyway, but still annoying 2) Horrible horrible time getting it setup. 3 of my other friends had to wait almost a month before it was finally up and running right, and I had the same experience 3) SUCKY UPLOAD SPEEDS!!! 128k sucks majorly, especially when trying to host a basic website off it 4) Horrible tech support. They have a nation wide repository, so they're not local, and it seems like they just read off a computer screen clicking a next button if it doesn't help. On the up side, if you can get a local tech out to your house, it's been my experience they really know their shit and are extremely helpful. It's just hard convincing the stupid ass tech support to send one out
All in all it's pretty good for the $30/month, compaired to $40/month for 256k/128k local cable.
