768/128 is now the

standard lowest level service package you can get nationwide. Verizon has settled issues with the various state PUCs and is upgrading customers from 640/90 to 768/128.

You should call tech support to see if you have been upgraded yet.

Re: 768/128 is now the

I just signed up with verizion about 10 days ago. I recieved my self-install kit 3 days later.(which was very simple) service was due to be turned on 12-26 but was up and running on 12-24.
The only thing that I don`t like is the way the assign you your`e e-mail addy. No real way of chosing exactly what you want.
So far my speeds have been 730\95. Best of all my pings for online game play have been rock steady 30-50ms!
My first month is free. months 2-6 are 29.95 and then it goes to $49.95 a month.
The thing that I like is the stability that dsl has to offer over cable. I used to have Prolog via Blue ridge Cable in the pocono Mtn. area of Pa.
Their customer service has really gone downhill in the past year. They even went as far as threatening to cancel your`e service if you used file sharing programs because it uses too much bandwith. My daytime speeds were as low as 56k down 100k up. So long cable!!! Hello DSL!!!

Verizon DSL in N. Western Pa.

The price for Verizon DSL service in Erie, Pa.(have not checked other cities) dropped to $35 a month with no commitment and the speed doubled as long as your line can handle the increase. If not you stay at 768/119 and pay $35. You have to call Verizon and request this package as up to this point it is not advertised. So far I have been happy with the service and have had only a few minor problems that were easily fixed without getting Verizon involved. Service was prompt at only one week to have everything upgraded. Although tweaking is still required to get optimal DL rates that is a minor issue.

You're past the distance limit

13,000' is past the distance limit for 1.5kbs which is 12,000'. You want faster speeds, get cable. Learn something about the technology before you go off on a rant. OOL is limited to NY, NJ, and CT. Any ISP that uses VADI is going to have the same distance caps.

Read the entire post before you criticize someone, duh! Apparently you didn't read the part that said Verizon Tech Support did a MLT test and said they would upgrade me.

Verizon should not promise an upgrade twice and then not deliver. You sound like a Verizon employee.

VADI, doesn't really go by distance anymore. It is mostly loop lose, that would include, Bridgetap and cable makeup (26g,24g, ext.) I currently have customers out at 15000ft with 1.5meg on the down here in oregon.

Thanks Hunter7mm for the response. Some folks who think they know it all are quick to criticize others without having any knowledge on the subject themselves. When Verizon billing told me that I was 13,000' from the CO and didn't qualify I asked for the MLT, Tech Support said that I qualified. I am having a problem getting Billing (and a few know-it-alls at BBR) to understand that Tech Support knows more than they do. Hopefully, I will get the upgrade sooner than later because billing gave me 2 free weeks due to their screwup and I will then be able to try Comcast and compare them side by side.

Thanks again for the info. Have you thought of joining BBR? It is free and we sure could use more knowledgeable people here!

Yes, he should join. That's why it took me three months working with VADI, VOL Technical Resolutions and Presidential Appeals to get provisioned to 1.5/384 that I had ordered. VOL stuck me at 768/128 and said that was that. I said no way. I am 14,020' from the CO but served from an RT that was not in their database so my EWL is 9,535'. It took a manual over-ride to get me provisioned which is not easy to get.

FYI, I am not a VZ employee but have learned a lot dealing with them during my installation and in the VZ forum. I am always willing to learn. 15k' is possible but there will be issues which is why it's not done. ISP's don't want to deal with the service hassles.

Since you are in an ex-BA area and cannot talk with VADI directly, get Presidential Appeals involved.

I called Tech Support today because they never called me as promised (what a shocker!). After being put on hold for 5 minutes I was told that PCC(?) said they would not qualify me due to line degradation issues. The Support dude said that if they qualified me I would be calling Tech Support every day with problems so I am stuck with 768 for now.

But I will call Presidential Appeals, thank you, and see what they can do. If all else fails, Comcast is my alternative.

Verizon DSL in S. Western PA

Verizon and Westell both suck. After using Verizon DSL for about 9 months the modem was refusing to sync(the light would keep blinking). I called Verizon support, a line test was conducted and it was determined that there was a problem. I was setup with an appointment for a technician to come to my house 3 days later. Guess what, the tech never showed up. Finally, after another 3 days a tech showed up at my house, with out bothering to reschedule an appointment at 8 in the morning. The tech said the problem was in the modem and that I should contact Westell for a replacement modem under warranty. A call to Westell had a representative try to put the blame on the hub that I use for my LAN. After arguing with the idiot, I finally convinced him that was not the problem and that I wanted a new modem. He then wanted a credit card number(in case I didn't return the old modem) before they would ship me a new modem. Since I had no intention of giving a credit card number, I was told that they would ship a new modem after they received the old one(which I promptly shipped to them), 2 weeks later I had still not received a modem. I called Westell and was given a number for their repair shop, this was just a voice message giving an email address which I then sent a message to. The next day a person from Westell repair left a message on my answering machine stating that my modem would shipped to me as soon it was repaired(what happened to the new modem!). After another call to Westell to inform them I needed a modem immediately because I used the internet connection for my home business, I was told that a new modem would be overnighted to me. The next day a I received a package from Westell that did not contain a new modem, but my old modem(I recorded the serial number before I shipped it). Over 3 weeks without an internet connection!
By the way, my so-called 768kps download speed usually operates at about 90kps!

Re: Verizon DSL in S. Western PA

Welcome to Broadband Reports.:) After reading your post I remembered that when I had a Westell modem problem after 11 months of service, Verizon replaced it, not Westell. That was one of the only good things Verizon ever did for me.

You should check out the Tools section of this site and run the Tweaks test to check out any problems you may have which are keeping your speed so slow. Also, check out the Broadband Tweaks Forum where there are some very knowledgeable folks who can help you with the speed problem.

hope all goes well

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience, but overall i have to disagree with you as far as Verizon doesn't care about the consumer. In my opinion Verizon is the #1 telco in the business but that's just my opinion. They have really stepped up on the plate & are really offering a product that can compete with the market. I am sorry you had such a sour experience, i hope everything turns out well.

Re: hope all goes well

I would agree they are the best telco in the business, but when that is made in comparison to the other telcos in the country, it is futile. I have lived all over this country and have had BellSouth, Qwest, SBC and Verizon. They all have something in common, their customer service sucks. Verizon's isn't as bad, and hey at least I don't have my dialtone go off at random times like it did with Qwest, or the phantom bills for things like extra phone jacks, from SBC. Now if they could only give me that credit they have owed me for almost a year now.

Goodbye Verizon

I called Comcast today, signed up and installed their High Speed Internet modem. All for $19.99 per month for 6 months. After 6 months I can cancel or continue for $42.95.

What kind of speed are they giving you for that price? Also, is it real broadband?

Thanks.:)

If Verizon hadn't given me the runaround about the free upgrade to 1.5 from 768 I would have stayed with them.

There's a rumor that Comcast is raising the cap in Philly to 3000 down!

Re: verizon rox

lol

I didn't go with Comcast because of rumors, but because Verizon Presidential Appeals (aka Chronic Troubles) couldn't get billing or tech support to raise my speeds although they said my line was capable of handling 1.5 down. Verizon tries to make you jump through too many hoops to get anything done properly. Soon I will rid myself of their phone service!:)

I've had terrible experiences with DSL. I've lived all over this country, and have had SBC, Sprint, Verizon, Bell South, Pacific Bell, etc.. DSL just doesn't seem to like me, at all. Don't know what it is, I always used to get terrible slow speeds. now my average download speed is 374 kb/s. That's a megabyte in 2 and 9/10s of a second.

Verizon DSL in W. Central PA

Adding to the comments on Verizon DSL in Western PA, I'd like to say that after having the service for a little over 2 years now that last month, for some reason unknown, my connection would go out sometime after 8pm and not come back until I woke up around the same time the next morning. So after countless calls to tech support a field technician came out to check the line (unfortunately I wasn't there). Whatever that person did fixed the connectivity problem. Just last night I ran a speed test after midnight and got 640/136 (usually in the 700s), but then I ran a speed test again after 1am and got 50/136. Funny thing is the next morning it was back in the 700s again. Talk about one messed up connection during the wee hours of the morning.

Verizon good in the Poconos

I live in the Pocono Mtn. area of Pa. I used to have cable with Blue Ridge. Which had some of the most inconsistent speeds you could ever wish for. This past December Verizon came thru with dsl. (Thank God) I signed up for the 768\128 along with their variations program. I pay a total monthly bill of $95. The dsl portion is $29.95. Unfortunatly I am 17k ft. from the co. So I was not able to get the 1.5 upgrade. The good thing. I have consistent speeds of 720\135, 24\7. The install couldnt have been any easier either. As for the customer support, If I get a tech that does`nt know sh!t I just hang up and call back. So far my Westell modem has not been a problem.

Problems vith Verizon DSL

I just got Verizon DSL and my download speeds in p2p programs are slow.... I never have above 12k in Kazaa... Also when I download something off the net I never have above 200k. Any ideas what might be wrong? I'm only looking for repliues from ppl who have Verizon DSL. All you other ppl out there, don't tell me that Verizon sucks and that I have to switch. This is BS. There's always a solution. If I wanted to get cable or other DSL provider don't you think I'd get it in the first place??
