No Problems

Here in Harford County I can tell you that I have had no problems at all!!

I have both a hardware & software firewall installed. They both took the change over without any problem.

I installed the "new" Comcast software a couple of nights ago, I had some very minor problems. I installed the software mainly to remove the @home elements that I had not all ready removed. I had to make about six minor changes to my IE Options to get things to run the way I like them. (I am running Windows XP.) Mainly the changes were related to the COMCAST proxy and the backup automatic dialup that I have in the event the cable connection is not functioning.

I was also able to get the Comcast e-mail up and running without any problems, and now have the majority of my e-mail coming to the new address.

Re: No Problems

Also no problems in Harford County except it slowed down. I was 2000/128 but now 1035/115. It has been stabily slow. I figure give them about a month and either they speed it up or I'll move on to another service.

Also no problems in Abingdon. Thats because I got rid of crappy old Comcast and got Covad DSL. Consistant speeds 24/7/365 and ping times that are great all over the country and Europe. I also have static IP's. In short. DSL owns cable in these here parts .

Fixed/AT&T

Yes it was pretty bad for a while, for 6 months. Now it seems to be fixed. Before, Montgomery Cable's initial network took a year or two to fix then Comcast and AT&T merged and @home died which was a mess and for some it still is. However if you did a tracert to anywhere in the past month to month and a half you would get 10ms or less to the points within montgomery's/DC comcast network then you get to AT&T which jumped to 250-400ms throughout. The problem was with AT&T and recently it has been fixed I think. I would be fine till 5PM at any time but then die at night. Quake pings are some of the best around 25-30ms. Dont give up yet, just wait till they fix it and get refunds. Also dont let them give you daily refunds, ask for months and they'll do it if you're persistent. BTW I'm in gaithersburg so we're on the same equipment. Dont listen to Comcast's one harford co customer.

No Problems Here.

I live in Prince George's County and have no problems with the transition. I do not like the lower speeds but I have only been down once. Generally it has been fine for me and I have been satisfied with the service here. It could be that the lines to my are relatively new. Comcast did not install lines to my building until last year.

Before I had DSL. The service was steady and consistent. Cable, however, varies depending on the time of day. I do not get to use the service that often. Usually I use it at night after 11:00 PM and Saturdays and Sundays. The speed after the transition has never been less than 800kbps and has gone as high as 1400kbps at the times that I have used it. I have been relatively satisfied with the Comcast service since I have had it. Of course, it could be because I'm from Prince George's County.

Re: No Problems Here.

Gained experience with many Comcast offices over the past 10 days. Got transferred to PG County by mistake, and was treated well.

Montgomery County has been consistently bad, both in knowledge and simple courtesy. When I press for more help or a transfer the policy seems to be to transfer me to a queue that ends in IVR I can’t get out of.

Same problem

I also live in Silver Spring. Comcast is hiding the truth about the poor connection problems. At first they told me there were outages in Silver Spring. About an hour (and two level 1 techs later), there haven't been any outages in the area and the problem is my router. I took the router out and connected directly to the cable modem...still dead.

The next tech support numbnuts says I have a router so I need to rent more IP addresses ($7/mo). After informing him that I've removed my router, he tells me "Oh, the router wasn't the problem. There's outages in Silver Spring."

I wrote an email to the Dept. of Consumer Affairs. There's a post here with the contact info.

Comcast really sucks

Wow, I thought Comcast hight speed cable modem was really great UNTILL about three weeks ago. Outages, then Slow response times at night, now down to about 56K . . . . humm . . . SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE ? ? ? and I am paying $40.00 per month for DIALUP SPEED ? ? ? Then tonight when connecting to many web sites no response from many sites. Then the ones I could reach it was like hit the enter button and go get a cup of coffee and maybe when you get back the page will be up on the monitor. Looks like a problem with there DNS servers tonight. I contacted Comcast support and they said they are working on the problem. Now been several hours and still not fixed. I cannot even connect to some Yahoo.com pages. I am going to give them about a week and if it does not get any better I am going to cancel COMCAST Slow Speed service!

Re: Comcast really sucks

Who's DNS are you using? Comcasts? It is SLOW and overwhelmed most of the time. Use another DNS.

See »members.home.net/kevingregg/athome.htm for info.

I had a problem the other day -- I could ping things on my local net (local mail server, dns, etc.) but not off of it even download.comcast.net was dead (not that I would *EVER* install any of their software). I called to bitch and after the first loser tech suggested that the problem was (I kid you not) the timezone setting on my PC, I got someone who had a clue.

Turns out the problem was that the Motorooter CyberSurfer cable modem I have had for about 4 years was not DOCSIS compatible. Amazingly they scheduled me for an appointment the next day to replace it (I pay the $5/month for a rental) and now things are working great again!

So -- have you checked your cable modem?

Re: Comcast really sucks

Modem is ok. Works fine from about 1AM to 5PM. I think I have a weak line from my home to the Comcast box but have pressed this issue several times without help. Two month ago, at my request a tech came with a meter and said my signal was ok and the problem in my inside wiring. I went over all inside and found no problem.

Since these problems I inspected my outside line and found a cut in the insulation. Since it will be 16 days before a tech can be here I repaired the cut myself. Didn’t help my internet but my TV pictures are much better.

Can get channel 5 for the first time.

But remember, tech said the signal was fine before!

Thanks for the input.

Re: Comcast really sucks

Well at least you where able to find th problem.
I (and about 5 other houses on my street) kept dropping off line every time it rained. (Yes I told this to the clueless "did you reset your modem" people.) I called five days later (bright and shiny) the tech would come out and scan the lines. tell me everything was fine must be my wiring. Finally after this happening about a half dozen more times, I placed the modem and PC in my basement, and plugged the modem directly into Comcasts line. Called
walked through the yup reset it still no link light BS.
And of course it's not an outage in the area or no other reports of problems. (Same line they gave me when @Home was shut off, only to read the press release the next day saying that their provider pulled their plug for non payment) So I went over talked to my neighbor who was extremely peeved since she just got off the phone with hack support. we decided to call our other neighbors who had also called tech support.
So I called back. told them it has to be a widespread outage since everyone on the block was out. Again they told me sorry we have no other reports of problems. So I read off the list of support issue numbers for Ms Clueless to look up.
Finally she says oh I'm sorry we'll have someone out their today. Well the guy didn't show up until the next afternoon. It was however still raining
Turns out that the seal on the distribution box on the pole had a leak and was causing havoc for everyone within about 8 houses.
After I called back to say I was working and I wanted to be credited for the outages they replied "Sorry we can't find your record in the system are you sure you called.. maybe if you write a letter we can get you a credit... CLICK"

So now I'm deciding if I should start my own wireless broadband company or not.......

@lmco.com
I had the same problem and it turned out to be the Mcafee Fire Wall program was hosing my speed. Once I uninstalled the Mcafee Fire Wall my speeds were back up to what they were after my Comcast install. Now very very FAST !

Comcast Problems & Support

I have been with Comcast@home since June 2001 and was VERY happy with the level of service. I did the Comcast.net changeover earlier this week and was notified that I would have access to @home e-mail until the end of February, so essentially I am now carrying two e-mail accounts with Comcast. This is where the trouble started. I could get into the new e-mail account but couldn't get e-mail from my old @home address. I called tech support and could tell immediately that the tech was very new to the job. She did a good job of 'reading from the book' as she tried to fix my situation, but actually ended up trashing both of my e-mail accounts. I asked for Level 2 support and was promptly disconnected. After 3 more tries to get to Level 2, I finally succeeded. I could tell that the Level 2 tech was 'reading from the manual' also and should have been in Level 1 instead of Level 2. I was actually correcting some of his errors. But we muddled through and got my Comcast.net e-mail working again. I have given up on trying to retrieve the 7 e-mails sitting on the @home server. Comcast just scratches their head as to what to do.

I get the feeling that everyone at Comcast Support is very new to the job and learning as they go. Is this really the best that Comcast can do? I mean, really, support is there to HELP you, not hurt you. Only time will tell, I guess.

Re: Comcast Problems & Support

Hi Just to add to that for anyone looking to set up their new email. ONLY Primary user names remain the same just that instead of being @home its @comcast.net the transition is still in effect and Comcast is sending new email addresses and encrypted passwords to subscribers on a case by case method. For subscribers who want to save time on the phone:when you recieve that email you want to set up an identity in outlook set up the account using:

mail.comcast.net as incoming(pop3)
and
smtp.comcast.net as outgoing(smtp)

if you haven't recieved your email with the new encrypted password you haven't been set up yet(give it till the end of the week;). I wouldn't recommend downloading the software it has caused alot of customers pc's to loose connection all it is is a commercialized version of explorer and outlook express. SAVE THE HEADACHE AND THE PHONE CALL!

Re: Comcast Problems & Support

Wrong again, dial-up breath.

The correct settings as of this date and time are:

pop3.comcast.net (24.153.64.3)
smtp.comcast.net (24.153.64.2)

As far as the primaries remaining the same, more techono-twaddle. Mine changed because of the way that ATT and Comcast ham handed my account transition, but that's a different story.

I will leave you with this teaser, though. Even though the primary got hammered by their ineptitude, I didn't have to email everyone I know and make them change their address books.

I, for one, am curious if Comcast will sell us out to the spam community like @home did.

Yes, and this is the kind of verbal diarrhea i would expect to come spewing from a unregistered poster. Why must you hide behind anonimity? Too afraid to show who your are? Have you been kicked off of this wonderful forum before? Gr8 job, str8ter.

Goes down like clockwork...

I lve in Kensington, MD. I've had the service for about 6 mos and have been happy...until this week. Every night, just after dinner, the service slows to crawl. Then shortly after it goes down completely. Tech support? Nada. I'm looking for alternatives.

Hey woody, give our friends in the silver spring call office a call and they will tell you you are the only one. They have never heard of this before. Although they have heard from me for a month and many others if you read these forums.

Comcast in PG county

I was very happy with the @home. Did a self install late October 2001 and the hardest part was drilling the hole to pull the cable up, since I ran it underneath the 1st floor to get it to my computer. Of course I wanted the computer on the opposite side of the house from the cable drop . During the transition they "lost" my modem's MAC address, then the provisioning was down, and finally after they did the rebuild and reprovision my modem wouldn't pick up an ip. At this point I have spent a total of seven or eight hours on the phone with a lot of people with Canadian accents and been on dialup for 5 days. They say they'll roll a truck to replace my modem in about a week! It seems you can't just go down to the cable office and swap your rental like you can with the tv converter. At this point I go to Circuit City, buy an SB4100, take it home, pull it out of the box, and I am UP. On @home I got 2200 to 2700 down, now I get 1100 to 1400 down, but so does almost everyone else around here. As far as DSL goes, I am a bit far from the telco, and I would pay more for less. The DNS issues are getting better, as most sites load. I never used the software, just setup the email - no spyware for me. Comcast keeps sending me mail, calling me up and insisting on getting me transitioned. Hey, I am transitioned, and Comcast was not a big help. Service although slower as mentioned has been reliable since my transition debacle.

I got my @home service late august or 2001 after some difficulty trying to get the signal to my home. I was getting TV service as well and comcast had to come back 3 different times in order to correct a simple problem-reconnecting the line into my home. The first 2 guys that came had no clue what he was doing. The 3 guy that came found the problem in less then 5 mins and I had the signal. Bad thing about this was that guy was a TV installer and not the internet service so I had to wait another 3wks for them. Well I got myself one of those self installation kit and I was good to go. In the begining I had problems with keeping the connection alive. Had to call comcast quite a few time, they keep telling me to do this and that. Come to find out I did not have to manuelly put in a ip address as this is assigned by comcast and changes periodically-which explains why the lost of connectivity. I transitioned over to comcast's network the last week of Jan. The connection speed was consistent as opposed to before the transition where my download speed dropped down to 56k modemn speed. However for the past 2 weeks I would lose connectivity and have to reset my modemn. My experience has been "ok" so far. It could be better of course.

as a fellow SS'er, i feel your pain. Everything you mentioned in your review/total accountability breakdown was exp'ed by me on a regular basis. its incredible how ignorant the tech department is at diagnosing problems on their end, but are quick to tell you whats wrong on your end.:(
