| Re: welcome I would not waste the money by paying for 3 connections. When you go outside of OOL, the connections to the regular web are SLOW. You would be lucky to get 2.5mb. Most sites can't support more than 200-500K. Go buy a broadband router instead, and save $40+ a month.
3 computers can share the bandwidth just fine.
If you are going to be running servers, be aware that a 20 person game server is going to use half the upload bandwidth not just on the individual computer, but in the homes that share your CMTS and the 5(?) that will share the same bandwidth frequency. I don't think that they can set it up so that you share the bandwidth with your other PCs, but it wouldn't be buying what you think you're buying. DOCIS is like a party line, All it will take is one of those people complaining about the speed for OOL to sniff you out and shut it down for breaking the TOS.

| Re: welcome said by shawn744: That sounds reasonable...and a router will connect the computers wirelessly?...or with hardwires??
Whatever you want. Wireless is much more expensive since you need expensive NIC cards and an expensive router, and the security isn't that good -- drive by network stealing, so they say. Also different routers have different distances. If you have all Windows, there are some 'iffy' networks that work via your power outlets, I wouldn't use them unless your home is relatively new and you are sure that the outlets have a working ground and there are no crossovers anywhere. Check out the hardware forums.

Because if i play a computer game or surf the web i kinda don't want it to use the connection of the other computers...in other words i don't want to split the speed of the connection from the main to make it slower at each computer...if that's what it does.
There is no allocation of bandwidth, there can be congestion, but usually it would take more than 3 computers to do that to a significant degree. I don't think that you are going to make it unbearable for anyone on the router, unless you do a lot of OOL FTP downloads which is downloading a 64mb file to see if you can do it in a minute or less. If you have all three doing it at the same time, well then you would be splitting the bandwidth for that moment. Most of the time bandwidth is not doing anything. I have three computers here, and we all use the network at the same time. There's not that much information being sent up and down in a game or a web page, even if you're shopping a catalog on the store that is very graphically intensive, and it the network is fast, it will be ready to take TCPIP packets from the next computer. Again, most slowdown or unresponsiveness is going to be outside of OOL's network and any home network you may have.
With a really good wireless set you could put the cable modem at the first split no matter where it was. Wireless would allow you if you are using laptops, to work where you like, not where the computer happened to be. In my case, I hardwired since two computers are in the same room, and one is in the family room. It was much cheaper and we have extra ports in each room (and some very long cables) if we want to work at the dining room table with a laptop.
No matter what, you can always add the additional connections if you find that you are unhappy. A good wireless setup with cards would be snapped up on ebay. -- www.Warpstock.org Oct 6-9, 2001 - Toronto, Ont. Canada

| Another point of view They're not complaining Vader. Just trying to optimize their connections like everyone else.
These are discussions within a closed community of OOL users, discussions that happen to be open to viewing by all. That's not quite fair to OOL users whose good fortune it is to happen to be in a "class" by themselves.
Try to think of it this way: Discussions about height among those living on the mountain top (OOL) will seem absurd to people living on the ground (everyone else . But don't fault even mountain-toppers for trying to go higher still!
And no, I don't have OOL.

| pricing I personally don't see how anyone could complain about those speeds even at $70+/month...
and the comment about people discussing within the group. Good point but doesnt make sense, considering OOL is a public company that competes with others. No other company in the nation offers those speeds at that price. -- 2002-06-11 15:30:39 EST: 206 / 33 --- my isp says there is no problem. 512/256 plan.

But jeez who really cares about that stuff you can get that stufff from a dial-up provider. Everyone gets dsl for the speed, which you have an abundance of for a ver small price. Im SOOOOO JEALOUS

| Optimum Online capping People for no reason They will probably end up capping you like they did to 1000's of their customers because they just can't handle the amount of usage people are putting on their switches. I know few people who got capped and we havn't ran any servers or anything to violate the TOS. We just use bandwith to play games online and video conferencing and stuff like that and I am told we can't even do that. So why am I paying $50 for just to check my email?
I WOULD STAY AWAY FROM THEM, THEIR SERVICE AND SUPPORT IS GOING DOWN. RIGHT NOW SPEED IS GOOD BUT WAIT TILL YOU USE GET CAPPED THEN YOU WILL HATE THEM TOO. I would never recommend them.
Just my 2¢. | |

LOL. anything fun you'd want to do would get your upload capped. Cablevisions idea of abuse is rather restrictive. -- You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much Bandwidth
