| TW's common problem...
Tech support seems to suck for most people who call Time Warner. I thank God that I do not have to call them much. I had 6 techs come out to my house and couldn't figure out sh@t. I told them it was hooked up wrong and I had a bad DTV box. They wouldn't change it. So I took it down to the office and demanded someone come change my splitter on the line. It hasn't failed since. Tech support needs a serious overhaul. -- "What?" - WWF's "Stone Cold" Steve Austin

| deja vu Hmm I had a similar problem with my installation. The guy came an hour after I expected him to. I thought "he works for the cable company, he has to come late". I already have cable service, so all he had to do was install an ethernet card and the modem (plus software). When he got to installing the drivers he ran into a problem. There was some windows file missing. Of course I didn't have the windows cd, because the nimrods at Gateway computers never sent me one with my computer. When I asked Gateway why, they responded "All you need is already on your computer". I almost busted a nut. Well back to my story. Of course the cable guy was clueless how to install everything. Thankfully he had somebody that knew something on his two way cell phone. It took him about an hour to get everything setup, but at least he stayed until it was done. That sucks that the guy left you hanging like that. By the way im in the Rego Park area, and I have been getting about 1900/350 myself. I must agree with you, the service is very good. | Re: deja vu I'm in South Ozone Park and I've been fairly satisfied with the service thus far. I've been hooked up since Dec 3. My problem is in getting the Toshiba modem hooked up through the network card. It only works through my USB port (which I need for my dig cam and scanner). Anybody else experiencing this? I tried downloading new drivers from the Toshiba website but had trouble installing them. Thank God for GoBack...... | |

| Questions before subscribing to RoadRunner
I currently have DSL with Direct TV, and am pretty pleased with the service so far, but am considering switching to RoadRunner because I currently have cable on my TV's, and the difference in price is not that great. I know that cable is faster than DSL, but I was curious as to how much faster. Since I'm not THAT technical, and know there is a way to gauge your speed but don't really know how to do that, the unscientific way I myself gauge the speed is when I download songs from Morpheus or the like.
On my DSL, I can range anywhere on average from 30 to 120, but most times it's more like between 30-60. Can someone in Queens (specifically Bayside, but anywhere in Queens will do) with RoadRunner give me an idea of what speed they download songs at? If the difference isn't so great, I'll stick with my DSL instead of going through the hassle of switching because I hear the tech support with RoadRunner isn't too great... so far, other than a very few down times, I have nothing bad about my DSL and I think the tech support is great.
Another question, and I know I'm beginning to ramble, lol, is my DSL isn't compatible with my 3Com Eithernet card so I have to use the USB hookup... does anyone know if this RoadRunner modem will be compatible w/a 3Com? I could probably ask tech support, but judging from everyone's complaints about them, I'd probably get more information from you guys out there! ;>)
Thanks a bunch!

| Let me tell ya staright up...I have both DSL (work)..and RoadRunner (home).
ROADRUNNER: 2500k down - 360k up (44.95/month)
AMERITECH DSL 1500k down - 256k up (59.95/month)
*** 2 things to keep in mind, I actually get those speeds listed on RR whereas I only get about 80% of what Ameritech advertises! Also, despite what some people might have said about cable slowing down during prime time hours, I haven't noticed that at all! But that may be just MY neighborhood!
With your 3com ethernet problem, your card is probably not configured correctly. Ethernet cards are typically all the same give or take a few optional features.
And as far as tech support goes....to be frank...they're both just about the same...BARELY ADEQUATE! They can solve the small occasional email hiccup that these services sometimes get but as far as prolonged outages? FORGET IT! You're better off troubleshooting on your own.

| I know a way to test speeds, I do alot of Tech stuff, like build comps and all so if you go to »nyc.speakeasy.net and hiut run test w/o having verbose checked you should see what you are capped at..as long as you arent downloading or uploading anything while taking the test | |

| Re: asking ? RR seems to offer the best caps with the exception of the OOL peeps. However, OOL is only regional so if you are getting 2000/384 service, you're doing well. It seems that most cable ISPs seem to really offer about the same DL but many cap the upload at 128 or 256. | |

| In responce to Straphanger Just to let you know that the RR cd does not contain any pertinant information or browsing software except for a copy of IE. There are a few driver files for ethernet an usb modems. The nice thing about RR is that it doesn't require special software clients to operate. IE for the browser (others will work if configured for the LAN connection), OE for email (again pretty much all mail programs will worked if configured correctly), and of course the hardware, NIC or usb. All the RR cd is generally used for is so the browser will be set for a LAN connection, set the homepage to RR, and set up your mail account for you in OE. You would have been provided a server generated username and password. There is another program on the RR cd called RR Medic which is just a monitoring program, but it's not important and it is a resource hog like many programs that add themselves to the start programs. | |

| RR in Indiana RoadRunner Cable is not too bad, I get a good connection most of the time. Connection problems are there, though. Often times during "primetime" PC evening use, my connection will totally go out. I will call Tech Support, and they know nothing about it, but offer to send out a technician thinking it's my modem or whatnot (which is not the problem). All in all, the speed is great for gaming (which I do a lot of) and comes around at a price of $40 per month. | |
