| I feel for you.. I was also a former EarthLink dial-up user, had two accounts with them so me and my brother didn't violate their TOS by using the same account twice at once when he, or I, was away. After reading all the horror stories about their DSL service, I almost certainly didn't want to believe it, but didn't want to take a chance either, and didn't order when it became available in my house. Best thing I ever did. I do get fliers from them just about every week advertising their DSL service. I simply laugh, and then frown upon realizing the waste of paper it is to advertise their service via bulk mail. Perhaps your deduction about an imminent sell-out may have some truth in it. I wouldn't fathom the reason behind their inferior quality of service nowadays either. -- United We Stand - The world shall remember the events of September 11, 2001 | |

| Get Roadrunner I'm sorry you had to go through all this. My friend went through this the first time he signed up with Earthlink. He cancelled, and now gave it another shot, and he finally got the modem and the line up. But he hasn't had a chance to test it because his computer is messed up...go figure! Anyway, Roadrunner will be much faster, and installation will be much faster. If they miss an appointment, you get a free month of service...not bad. I'm using Roadrunner right now, and I love it...the only bad thing is the speed cap and e-mail. Their e-mail is terribly slow, but I don't use it much anyway. Good luck dude! | |

| My follow up...
Well, it is about 3 weeks since I got my kit and went online via ELN DSL for the first time.
This was my first experience into this broadband technology. It is been a long and frustrating experience. For 3 years and 7 residences (yeah, I know, a lot of moves, huh?) plus another 11 months total request to order fullfillment I have waited. Nine months of that was the wait since the order's final approval.
Well... Hmm...
Yes, I am happy, and, well, disappointed.
Broadband is a fantastic thing, better, in fact than sliced bread. I would take a world with the former over the latter any day (except soup days, ha ha).
I feel that it is a real shame that both Earthlink and Verizon/Genuitiy refuse to provide what I should be able to reasonably expect, and that would be bandwidth between 1.1Mb and 1.5Mb down and about 300K up.
For the first week I was testing at about 705K down/129Kup and my file downloads were ramping 90% of the time at 1.5 Mb down. Ever since then, for over 2 weeks I have been downloading files only ramping up to about 500K at best. A lot of the time the files only move at about 300K, which is still faster than the modem, in my experience.
I feel that it is a shame that ELN refuses to look after us by enforcing our desire for winning "the right to maximum possible bandwidth", but for those of us only serviced by the evil Verizon (who use dirty tactics, just as their wireless divsion does) we just trod along slowly.
I do believe that the day when all of this will change is coming, and that Verizon, AOL, Earthlink, DirectTv, Adelphia, MSN, and others will see the punishment that they have earned.
I am preparing a letter to selected congress, senators, law/courts, and the president right at the moment. I envision a hugely different world within ten years. I will be much older, but as long as I get to enjoy a few years of it I will be delighted...
I just wish that I could get everything on one fiber optic, be able to call in my order, and be able to select from different services that could have me running within five minutes. All TV, Voice, and Online would be converged, and my bandwidth would exceed 25-50Mb, to boot.
There is no reason for any of us to not expect or demand that, and it should all exist within just a couple of years, no less.
My hope is that all companies who treat their clients lousy suffer an end to them.
Shame on you, Verizon. Shame on you, Earthlink. You have both talked to me with foul disposition, provided less than poor service, and broken what should be the law. I have never conducted my own life the way that you do business, shame shame shame on you.
My anger is aimed mostly at Verizon. I pray that their monopoly gets ripped to God angered shreds and total anhilation.
Anyhow, it is still nice to not have to tolerate dialup. I sure hope that I don't experience speed and line drops like what many have reported, and if I do I will raise all the hell that I can.
In the mean time, well, a pat on the back for everyone who really did their best to help me. -- "Ideas?! Everybody's got ideas... Oh, *that*... So, what did you say it does?Huh? Hmmm. Oh, I seeee..."

| Re: My follow up...
Since you have bothered to do a political diatribe, I feel that I should put in my own little rebuttal.
You rail against Verizon and Earthlink for your line being capped at 768. Never mind that Earthlink is at the mercy of Verizon in the matter; they cannot even legally request that the cap be removed. Never mind that Verizon is the one who owns the physical copper line, and that by virtue of owning, they can decide what they will and will not allow. Never mind that no one -has- to provide you with broadband service of any kind.
You do know that the FCC regulates what data rating a line must have, don't you? The FCC, a -government- agency, states that the line should be able to carry 9600 baud. That's 9.6k. Enough for a fax. Are you surprised?
1) You should feel lucky that you are able to have any DSL at all. All the government has to do is take back the permission they gave in the early 90s for businesses to access the Internet, and return it to how it was in the 80s - all government and educational facilities, under the old ARPANET and DARPANET systems. It's that easy. Just a nationalization of the internet for "national security reasons". Never happen? No, just very unlikely. But it could - and definitely might - happen.
2) The FCC could simply decide to remove all broadband capability. Change the regulations so that only businesses that pay large fees can have broadband access. All of a sudden, we are back at 56k. Or 9.6k. Take your choice. They have the power to do so.
3) And last, but not least, people like you are to blame for the current broadband/ISP state. If Ma Bell had remained just that - Ma Bell - then there never would have to be disagreements between who owns what copper line and how it is leased, etc, etc. It could all be decided by one monolithic corporation who makes all decisions and policies, and then implements them equally along the line. It could all be coordinated that much easier. It would be even better if that mother of telcos was the only ISP as well - pure, seamless, integrated function!
But oh no, they had to deregulate everything. For "competition". It seems that people forgot the American business model - you enter a market, and do whatever you can to make a profit and Get The Money. Customers are a means to an end. Products are a means to an end. You shall hire employees, pay them as low as possible, and then spit them right out when they are used up. And there are no personal feelings - this is all business.
That's why Microsoft is successful. And HP. And Verizon. And IBM, my company. That's why MindSpring was bought by Earthlink - MSP lacked the hunter-killer instinct.\
So, you think it will be a better world? Better start campaigning for everything to be brought under one single umbrella, owned by one company. Then you will get what you want.

| A view from the imagination. DSL Oberst in responding to a post starts with his usual bridge building tact: "Since you have bothered to do a political diatribe...."
"You should feel lucky that you are able to have any DSL at all".
(Condescending and ridiculous even on its face.)
"Never mind that Earthlink is at the mercy of Verizon in the matter; they cannot even legally request that the cap be removed."
(Actually it is never illegal to request, and usually not illegal to demand. Illegal means break the law. It would probably be illegal if they unilaterally did some action that caused the cap to be removed without Verizon's permission. Also, EarthLink could make it clear to its subscribers who have Verizon that they will be capped EarthLink's "best effort" for Verizon Telco users is 768 down, not 1.5 MB, and EarthLink could also make a business deal with Verizon as many other ISPs do to have that cap removed or raised to the 1.5 MB down for an extra $10 a month to offset the extra money Verizon charges EarthLink!)
"And last, but not least, people like you are to blame for the current broadband/ISP state. If Ma Bell had remained just that - Ma Bell - then there never would have to be disagreements between who owns what copper line and how it is leased, etc, etc."
(The person complains about the lousy service he got from EarthLink DSL and suddenly he is "...to blame for the current broadband/ISP state." Say what? Oh by the way when Ma Bell broke up they were just the phone company and not much of anything else. If they had not been broken up then it is just as likely that being a monopoly everybody would have to pay $100 or more per month for residential DSL and long distance rates would be 30 cents a minute.)
"That's why MindSpring was bought by Earthlink - MSP lacked the hunter-killer instinct."
(Say what again? MindSpring was bought because they lacked the killer instinct? That doesn't make sense even if you believe it. Besides, they weren't bought by EarthLink. The two companies merged. If you are dumb enough to think a merger, and in this case a relative equal merger, is the same as being bought, will you are even farther behind than you realize.) | I don't like flame threads, and I value having a good standing here, so I won't respond the way that I would like to.
I simply find you logic bizarre.
Many of the things that you assert are not realistic or rational, but it is your mind and mouth, use it as you choose.
EL has a contract with Verizon/Genuity for a specific product at a specific speed. I happen to love EL, and that is greatly why I post shame on you's to them, I know that I can expect better.
Competition being an icon of the greatest type from America is rejectable by some of the greatest of science and business minds. But, still, there are instances where competition can yield fine results.
No offense, please, and I am being sincere, but I feel weirded out by your post/response. Our government "taking back" the internet. What the... -- "Ideas?! Everybody's got ideas... Oh, *that*... So, what did you say it does?Huh? Hmmm. Oh, I seeee..."

Amen. As I began to read the review I felt really bad for the customer and there is no doubt he has gotten the run around. However, despite that, by the time I got near the end I wanted to hang up on him too! [text was edited by author 2002-01-03 19:07:24]

| You complain about the company but then you continue to give them your money. I dont get that, if they treated you so badly why do you reward them with your money? If idiots like you didn't put up with this kind of crap, the companies wouldnt keep doing it.
And yeah, that was way too long and trying way too hard to be a creative writing essay

I feel for you. Had the same issues, same route to resolution. Although I ended up leaving EL for SBC\PB.
Was a 5+Year Mindspring customer, and EL scared me off in a year.
EL threw things in the dumper when they took over. While my Executive Escalations tech was good, he was hampered by things he couldn't change or control.
I told them that when I called to cancel my account and they tried to "save" it.
When you start to have this kind of problem with them, leave. It's the only way they'll understand and fix it.
Can't wait for the class action suit to go through.
