| Anon | SOrry to hear that I live in Freeport, and i have been using Verizon for about a month or two and i get about 1Mbps to 2Mbps, depending on net congestion, and i'm only paying the 39.95 like most other people. The only thing i can tell you is to do the tweaks that this site gives you and try some other sites that will help add some things to your registry, and i wish you the best of luck with it | |

But Verizon still sucks, after they disconected me they wanted to make me put in a new contract with them. and their service was more times out then working. so stop recomending a bad service with the worst tech support. -- Living in Verizon Hell

I wouldn't say that... while it may be true that Verizon's DSL service was poor sometime ago... it has vastly improved. I am very happy with them, and so too are some of my friends who dropped Comcast Cable to sign up with Verizon instead. I am getting 96-97% consistently of the 1.5/128 speeds where I live, including evenings. And I live almost 7000-8000 FT from the CO! I once went almost 7 days straight without loosing the connection (have the linksys 4-port router/switch), it came back up in 2 minutes. Technical support has been good even though I use it very sparingly. I am very happy with Verizon, and their no-contract promotion is worth taking the risk for a one month trial. I recommend Verizon! -- -ArunDC

| Linksys DSL Router works with PPPOE The Linksys DSL routers work ***very*** well with Verizon PPPOE connections. They are available with 4 and 8 port 10/100 switches built-in as well; there's even one that has a built-in wireless access point. Other routers from SMC, D-Link etc. should also work well.
The only problem is that Verizon doesn't want to know you have ANY kind of router. They say they don't support those connections. Of course, the funny thing is that these routers are MUCH more reliable than WinPoet or ANYTHING running under Windows.
When you have a service outage, and resetting the modem and then the router don't work, you should reconnect your PC directly to the DSL Modem. Next, reset the modem, reboot the PC, try WinPoet again, and THEN call Verizon if you still have service problems. Btw, you should make sure THIS arrangement works when you have NO problems with the connection, so YOU won't be the source of problems when they do happen.
Also, if the "ready" light is flashing (not steady), and you've reset the modem, you can be sure the problem is NOT with your router, pc, or whatever. Plug in a phone where the modem is and see if you have dial tone. Dial 958 if you do have dial tone to see if you still have your own phone number. This can help Verizon, and save you time, if you have this done before you call.
Don't take any crap from Verizon (if they say it could be YOUR PC etc.) if you have a flashing "ready" light on the modem. If your wiring to the modem hasn't changed, it's almost certainly THEIR problem.

That 958 number may be the ANAC number in your CO, but it is not a universal one - at least in my part of the world.

| I have to disagree just slightly.... I do VZ tech support....if your ready light starts blinking, and you havent changed anything....dont argue. W3e know the questions are mental but we ask as quick as possible to get it done. We actually do want to help...i promise. | |

4 edits | Competitive / Dry-Loop / Service Tying Wish Verizon would be competitive with Comcast in my area. But by the time you are forced to buy phone service in order to get DSL the price is more than Comcast HSI + basic cable, and for less bandwidth.
I told Verizon no more access to my wallet until they provide naked/dry-loop DSL or FiOS, and took my phone service strictly mobile with Cingular and internet business to Comcast.
Looking forward though to the day I can return to Verizon, but I still encourage everyone who is fed up with Verizon forcing them to buy phone service they don't want or need ,just so they can have DSL, to put the pressure on Verizon by taking your business elsewhere till Verizon uncouples these two services which are not technologically interdependent.
