1 edit | »itvibe.com/default.aspx?NewsID=2475 The Linspire v4.5 full product is available for download, free of charge. Michael Robertson said the "offer is good for the next couple days".
To get Linspire free of charge, simply visit the Linspire order page at »www.linspire.com/btorder and add one to your shopping cart. Once there, click on Apply Coupon. In a somewhat final dig at Microsoft, the coupon code you need to enter is: LINDOWS
Apparently the offer is for downloading through Bittorrent only
Edit: Link to .torrent file. (Must have a Bittorrent client to download) »tracker.linspire.com/torrents/li···.torrent |

| A lot of Linux people seem to be getting upset about all the hype around Lindows. Even though I haven't specifically heard anyone say this, I'm getting the impression that Lindows is not Linux. It may run on a Linux kernel, but it is not open source, therefor it is not Linux. I don't think that they give you access to the source code. I'd like to see Linspire succeed. More choices is a good thing. I'll check it out, and report here later. I may very well agree with you that it sux. I already think that X sux, and I think that Lindows relies very heavily on X. I'd like to see the open source community come out with an entirely new GUI, without X for Linux. |

Thank you for your opinion. Would you care to describe your experience with Lindows/Linspire? Or are you just stating the opinions of the tech gods at techtv from a year old article?
Not being able to install free software on Lindows is news to me. Lindows does have easy to install versions of different programs for sale through Click-N-Run but, this has nothing to do with the installation of free programs downloaded from alternate sites. I happen to like a Linux OS designed for dummies like me. |

Cool, I'm ready to go. lol look how bad my share ratio was on that one. I've got an old HP Omnibook Laptop that I have never been able to find the correct Linux sound drivers for. I'll be interested to see if the sound works with Linspire. |

I had a problem with sound drivers. Couldn't get anything to work. Played around with it for a couple of days but scrapped. It looked interesting. Doesn't come with a hole lot of stuff bundled stuff. I just didn't enjoy the hole business model with the software. To much of a pain to get any add-on software.
I'm some people are quite fine with it and love it. I just wasn't too impressed. If I can't have sound, what's the point? |

| I did a lot of research on the sound issue, when I was trying to install Red hat, and Mandrake. I don't quite understand the whole issue, but it has something to do with HP refusing to release the specs, or something. There are OSS drivers that you can purchase, but I'm not willing to pay for them out of fear that they might not work. |

Hmmm... Well I can't even get it to install. The whole system locks up while reading from the CD, shortly ofter boot.
Can't think of any options, since it doesn't even get to the install screen. |

You have to pay for every little program. What's better? Microsoft all in one...or the Lindows crowd nickle and diming you? |

1 edit | reply to ZZZZZZZ I went through the procedure to download Lindows, including all the way through printing the receipt. Then, it wants my payment info for the free trial on Click-N-Run, and I stopped cold there.
Do I have to do this, in order to get the download??? I'm running on W2K Pro, so am not sure about how to go about downloading Lindows. I want to try it out on an older machine, just for grins.
Edit: Tried it again; still can't get the download. What's the secret??? -- "...If the beasts were gone, we would die from a great loneliness of spirit." - Chief Seattle |

1 edit | It's all free . apt-get install mozilla boom you have mozilla install on your system ..
More about apt-get . 8.2.1 APT
APT is an advanced interface to the Debian packaging system. apt-get is the command-line tool for handling packages, and APT dselect method is an interface to APT through dselect. Both of these provide a simpler, safer way to install and upgrade packages.
APT features complete installation ordering, multiple source capability and several other unique features, see the User's Guide in /usr/share/doc/apt/guide.html/index.html.
Install the apt package, and edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file to set it up. If you wish to upgrade to the latest stable version of Debian, you'll probably want to use a source like this one:
»http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
You can replace http.us.debian.org with the name of a faster Debian mirror near you. See the mirror list at »www.debian.org/misc/README.mirrors for more information.
Details on this can be found in apt-get(8) and sources.list(8) manual pages, as well as in the aforementioned APT User's Guide, in /usr/share/doc/apt/guide.html/index.html.
Then run
apt-get update
followed by
apt-get dist-upgrade
Answer any questions that might come up, and your system will be upgraded.
To use APT with dselect, choose the APT access method in dselect's method selection screen (option 0) and then specify the sources that should be use. The configuration file is /etc/apt/sources.list, and its format is described in the sources.list(5) manual page.
If you want to use CDs to install packages, you can use apt-cdrom. For details, please see the Release Notes, section "Setting up for an upgrade from a local mirror". |
