| My %$# MBR
...that's a long story...and u know a part of it but now I need more help...so I'll start. I had WinXP on my C disk(NTFS)and a data disk D(FAT32) on my laptop(without floppy). Then i decided to try Linux Suse 9.0, made 1024mb linux swap disk and 10gb reiserfs disk for it, installed it without problems and chose to install GRUB to MBR, everything went fine. I didn't like Suse, so decided to try Slackware...and that's were my problems began. The installation went fine until I had to choose were to install LILO to, I chose to MBR and was reported about an error. After reboot I saw black screen and one word on the top left corner GRUB. Thank god I have another computer so I did some google'ing and found out that now i need to get WinXp CD and run Recovery console and "fixmbr". Unfortunately I have only WinPE CD where I'm staying now, so i tried to do the same with it but without any luck...then did some more googling and found that a command executed from linux "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1" should resolve everything. So I got a copy of small live linux distro R(ecovery).I(s).P(osible). and executed this command. After doing this and rebooting I got only black screen with "Operating system not found" booted with R.I.P. again and tried to install GRUB, but no luck. Then tried fdisk from R.I.P. and it found some errors in my MBR and I fixed them with w(rite) After doing this and rebooting saw only a black screen, then made a startup CD from win98 startup floppy and tried fdisk /mbr, but it couldn't find c disk (thought that it is because my C is NTFS) after reboot i again saw "Operating systen not found" So now booted with WinPe again and it couldn't find any partition. That's my story So the only thing that bothers me now Is there any possibility to get my data from at least D:(that was FAT32) back. Could "Easy recovery pro" or "Partition Magic" help my anyhow? I do not care about linux partitons or anything else. The best thing of course would be to boot WinXP again, but don't think this is stil possible Of course if u have any sugestions I would greatly appreciate them. |

| The Linux command you executed destroyed both the partition table and the MBR. This thread has links to some data recovery programs. »Please recommend free data recovery software Here is a pay solution that may not be in the thread »www.ontrack.com/ -- Jim Anderson |

| What good recovery software will do is scan the disk for partition boot sectors. If it finds them it can reconstruct what would need to be in the partition table. So there is a good chance you can recover everything. -- Jim Anderson |

| From their site: PC INSPECTOR File Recovery 3.x Finds partitions automatically, even if the boot sector or FAT has been erased or damaged (does not work with the NTFS file system) Well, I already have Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro 6.3, will try to mess with it, thanks for the link anyway =] |

| reply to ubz This website indicate it supports NTFS. »www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery···come.htm All you really need it to do is restore the partition table. All the files should be intact. -- Jim Anderson |

Or put another hard drive in your computer and use that to temporarily install Windows. Whatever you do, do not make any changes to the messed up disk. |

| You might want to give this utility a try. It's free for diagnostic purposes then to fix you have to pay for it. »www.highergroundsoftware.com/

1 edit | reply to ubz yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhh! guess what? =] Had lots of problems, but now everything seems to be nearly perfect. I've used live linux cd, gpart command,it guessed my partition table which was almost correct. Now I have all of my partitions, the most important D has no problems, even Windows start booting, but end with an error... safe mode doesn't help, but whatever, even if i'll have to format C this is not such a big problem. Thanks everyone! ..out to experiment with Xp boot =] If anybody's still interested in my problems, have a look here »gpart guessing partitions Thanks everyone! |
