| Apple did it because it was a huge leap forward from OS 9. But it'd be a huge leap backwards for Microsoft, so why would they downgrade their kernel to UNIX?

Yes your right, but I dont know who would use FreeBSD for that anyways. IBM AIX or HP UX kicks anything coming from Windows.
