| ZoneLabs now does AntiVirus
»ZoneLabs Antivirus Suite beta
The latest ZoneLabs ZAP beta is a suite that includes antivirus protection. For many years users have felt that sooner or later ZoneLabs would include an antivirus with there product. Now they have. Hopefully this cross post won't be frowned upon. I was hoping to have this thread just be a discussion on users opinions of ZoneLabs now including antivirus with there product. Not a thread discussing the beta itself. Hopefully that makes sense.

| First off, ZA is the thread that holds the fabric of my security layers together. I don't currently use a router so I will wait for the beta to get thru it's trials. This 2 in 1 approach will have a lot of takers, I sure hope they get it right the first time. Count me as a skeptic, but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong. -- Dave said "By the way, 4294967295 is just another way to write -1". |

| reply to IGGY I believe the AV portion is from Computer Associates (CA), which is a pretty decent AV. Hmmm .. Microsoft buys out RAV, now ZoneLabs apparently has a bundled CA product .. what next? I guess these companies see a vital need to ensure that everyone has and uses a decent AV. -- "But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor. 13:13) |

| And now part of the reason for this »Computer Associates VS Kaspersky can come to light.:) I had a good idea what the outcome would be. But thought I'd get others opinions as well. Looks like my budget won't be slimming down any. KAV stays. I'd truly hoped ZoneLabs would go with Kaspersky when they decided to go this route. Oh well such is life.
I do think users will find this change of use. Maybe even some that use a firewall and not an AV ( normally the other way around ) will actually put this solution into use. -- Test Your Security Team Z Member Cable Modem Diagnostics InsightBB waiting for new tiers |

| reply to IGGY Understood, we all get attached to our favorite AVs, and I doubt ZoneLabs is gonna convert many people to their bundled AV; but it will be good for those folks who currently have no AV protection, just as it might be good if Microsoft put a "RAV Lite" into the next version of Windows, as an optional component .. again, for those who otherwise would not run an AV. Your right, I knew something wasn't sitting well with me but couldn't figure out what it was. Now if ZA was bundling NOD32 I would be thinking what a great idea. -- Dave said "By the way, 4294967295 is just another way to write -1". |

| I don't think there choice for AV vendor is a bad one. Just not one I'd personally have used as a standalone. From some of my other readings. It seems as if current users of Computer Associates are happy with there choice. Not the splash screen they get though. I think many users will look at as I did. Does this new feature work as well or better than my current choice? And will it in fact save me money if I go with the suite versus standalone products. -- Test Your Security Team Z Member Cable Modem Diagnostics InsightBB waiting for new tiers |

| reply to IGGY I just tried the beta and the AV part looks really nice. Its detection rate is lacking in trojans and backdoor detection, I am probably spoiled by KAV though But I like the simple and nice looking interface without too many options, so advanced users will probably not like it but newbies will love it. |

@rr.com | reply to IGGY Since CA is using an older version of ZA in its EZ Armor, perhaps it will be an older version of CA's AV that will be bundled with ZA? |

Nice synergy as the marketing folks would say.. Older products across the board. Think I'll stick with NIS. |

... I'm happy with eTrust as my A/V, and ZA as my firewall, but I just don't think I want BOTH together in one program ... maybe I'm being overly cautious, but one of the most important things I've learned from this forum is a layered approach to protection, and I would not feel comfortable with one program doing too much ... I know many of you use NIS to do just that, and some are now using the eTrust package, but I wouldn't do that either - just my own opinions, not trying to run dowm those products ... it may be just an illusion of more security, but I like separate programs, and maybe some overlap, in my setup ... that said, it's better to have than have not, and the convenience might appeal to people ... in today's climate I wouldn't even object if M$ built an a/v in, but I doubt I'd ever use it myself ... as long as, in the words of Nikka Costa, 'everybody's got their something' ...

I would prefer a complete separation of actions between ZAP and it's anti-virus, but if I can install one and not the other, it will be fine. If not, I won't like it at all. |

| reply to IGGY Step back and take a look at what Zone Labs is doing, and when doing so, consider that they were just bought out by the most powerful and profitable firewall company in existence -- Check Point.
What they are doing is moving into being able to better secure client systems, both internally and on roadwarrior systems that are being used as VPN clients. Adding AV to their offerings gives them just one more piece of the pie, i.e. this makes one less product a business would have to buy from someone other than Check Point in order to secure their workstations.
The business side of things will often reveal the path to many things technical.

I too use E-Trust and yes our version is 11.4 8269 for vet as of this AM. Remember....this is a bundled version with another software and sometimes version numbers are different. Also....that pic is from what IGGY posted in another thread....»ZoneLabs Antivirus Suite beta -- *Team Z* Member |

| reply to IGGY Greetings,
So I can see that they're still willing to put more crap into their software/program/application.
Haven't they learn that more code = more chances of error?
Integrating Anti-Virus with Firewall is absolutely marvelous when they peacefully co-exist, and work with each other to provide max. efficiency with resource usage & protection.
However, judging from ZA's history of incompatibility, inefficient system resources usage, and long start-times, it seems like the chances of them creating such a marvelous piece of software is a half-half.
If they make it work separately (from the firewall), then I guess they'll merely re-brand another AV company's product. -- What I used to be I no longer am... God, why can't you freeze time for my sake? |

| reply to IGGY This doesn't thrill me very much at all. If the antivirus is separate and can be turn off okay. If not, I go looking for a new firewall. Problem is they do these additional things but don't always do them well. For example, ZAP now sort of protects process's running, but doesn't protect anything like Process Guard. But can you turn it off, No. My other big issue, with these kind of moves, is if you have a problem, you can't get thru to ZA people to ask. I have a minor conflict issue, and I posted on the ZA forum, asking for a ZA contact so I could discuss the issue. Got nowhere. ZA has a firewall around it's people. If they bundle AV into ZAP PRo, and you can't turn it off, it is good by ZA |
