Has anyone had any experience with the following service from Shaw? 5down/1up for $10 more seems like an awesome deal.

BTW, did you need a new cable modem? I've got one of the old white big Motorola dealies. |

join:2003-02-16 | Yeah, I just looked at that today, that's the problem. The caps appear to be the same, they offer SOHO, business and pro packages. So, I'm guessing the caps are roughly the same which would make this package practically worthless. |

| You need the new Motorola DOCSIS modem. I believe they will swap yours out if you want to go on this package. Here is a test I just did at 2:30pm mountain time,

I will downloaded the new real player today, pulled in at 700k/s. Speeds seem to be a lot better then before. I will do another speed test tonight at off peak hours. |

The speeds should be roughly the same. This is an interesting development. 3000/500 is good enough for me as long as it remains consistent like it is now. |

| reply to tasgarde wow shaw is quoting actual numbers for speed!
It'll be interesting to see if they can keep everyone with consistent service... or if they'll just pack the nodes with twice as many people as now.
It's my understanding that the new docsis "nodes" running at docsis 1.1 spec are capable of ~27mbits downstream vs: the terayon "nodes" which run at (I think) ~12-14mbits downstream only. So if shaw only puts the same amount of users on the new system as the old system things would probably be fine for everyone. My bet is they'll overload the nodes heavily to recover the cost of deploying the new system lol |

| reply to tasgarde What rwin are you guys using to get those speeds? I find if i use 64240 that my internet is very inconsistent and if I use a lower number like 43800 it's okay, is that too low or should i worry? And yes, the upload is good! I get 960 up everytime!! Woot woot! |

| reply to tasgarde In fact this should be good news for Telus users. Telus will have to do what Sympatico did in the East, upgrading it's speeds for the exisiting packages to compete. On second thought, wouldn't this be bad news for existing Shaw users who are in un-congested node and are already getting 4 to 5 Mbits download. Speed tiering is in, speed capping wouldn't be that far away. Komal is right, if the bit-cap is about the same as existing, that means you have to turn off your connection after 5 days of usage instead of 10. You have been warned!! |

| reply to tasgarde I asked Shaw if I can get a DOCSIS modem with the regular high speed internet package. (I live in Vancouver) Here is the response: __________________________________________________________
Thank you for contacting Shaw Internet technical support.
Currently, the only way to ensure that you can use the DOCSIS cable modem is to upgrade to the Xtreme-I add-on. This is due to our limited supply of DOCSIS cable modems in the Lower Mainland. If you would like to maximize your online experience, please call us at 604.629.8888 and arrange an upgrade to Xtreme-I.
If you need any further help or assistance, please let us know.
Thank you for choosing Shaw.
