They suck

They make bloatware. It annoys me when people use their format. Use real alternative.

I stopped using Real Player years ago, never looked back either and I dont plan on going back unless lots of people say that it truly is good.

Me too. I am trying to rid myself of Real Player files. I am doing pretty good so far.

Real Alternative is decent, but I still prefer .avi or mpeg.

I don't believe Real Alternative is fully legal to distribute with a product or project..

We ran into a problem where unfortunately Real was the only answer.

Nothing yet is out there that compares with Real's RealPix format for doing slide presentations synchronized with an audio stream.. True; flash may be an answer -- but there are no tools that can be used during encoding and recording that can be simply imported into flash to synchronize slides -- with Real, it reads an SMIL XML file that's very simple to write for.

True; MS is starting with HTML+Time, but support for this is very limited.

So, for a conference with 81 presentations that we had to get online in very short order, we had to stick with Real.

I did not like that; and I don't like forcing people to use RealPlayer since it is/has been so horribly invasive.

We looked at RealAlternative, but I'm not sure about the licensing agreements -- and what liability might be taken on by somebody encouraging its use in a commercial application. The "player" framework for RealAlternative is open source, but it uses Real's codecs.. that's a bit of a problem, I think.

I don't get why many sites are using real media files for their audio/video streaming files. I just skip to a different site because I hate to install real player crap.

Not really because Quicktime's streaming format works on Mac and is far, far better than Real or Microsoft's formats.

Yeah, given a choice, quicktime is my preferred format. But mostly because it can't be easily streamed, so I can download the videos.

Unless I am mistaken, major sites who use Real Media are GIVEN space on the REAL networks servers for FREE. This is a good reason to use them - ask, ABC News, CBS News... and all the other major sites that offer no choice. EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENT = FREE

Hardly, Microsofts codecs for HD content kick the living crap out of anything Quicktime or Real could hope to produce.

If your machine can handle it, check out the following

Hardly what? Aren't you just echoing the rest of us? When MS first introduced WMP9 and the codecs, it released this page
»www.microsoft.com/windows/window···lity.asp
for the user to see if their system was powerful enough.

Considering that's only for HD content... Other than that, WMP is a poor format. I know, I've worked with just about all of them for audio and video.

And even then, Quicktime has not released an HD version of the QT codec yet, so you are comparing apples to oranges. When Quicktime's HD codec comes out, it will probably trump WMP.

I've avoided installing it since the Windows 95 days when it was supposed to be popular (was it ever?). Now when I see it installed on peoples computers I use I tell them I simply cant stand looking at their stupid Real icons so I uninstall it. They end up telling me they didn't like it bugging them all the time anyway .

Perfect first post by the way. "They suck" is just the right heading.

Not exactly. Did you put in the factor of compression ratios? WMV can deliver a great video/sound stream in a fraction of quicktime's format.

The compression ratio for WMP is about all that's in its favor... Artifacting, distortion, etc. happen much more with in than with other codecs, excluding Real. Realplayer's codec is probably the worst I've seen when it comes to problems like artifacting and distortion.

When I need to cut down a movie's size, I use WMP format, I rarely notice a quality drop, and it reduces the size by up to (for me) 42%.
