| [XP Pro] SHDOCVW.DLL Error writing To CD
I get the attached error every time I attempt to burn a folder to a CD using the WinXP routine. This is a function I have performed each month in the same manner for quite some time. The process starts normally, creating the temporary file to be copied, and nearly at the end I get the error but never get to start the copy routine.
I am aware of the alternatives I have to perform this procedure which I am not seeking. I am only seeking to permanently resolve this issue so I could continue to use the XP CD burn process.
I already "Googled" for info on this issue but failed to discover any relevant date. Any ideas??
Thanks

Thanks!!! I knew you would eventually get to this thread and lend your expertise, as usual!!
I did see that KB article but I just couldn't make it fit this situation. There were too many dis-similar components to the situation described.
In my search for answers I did see where replacing the file and repairing XP did not solve the problem. I am still considering replacing the file but not from the CD as it appears that this file has a later version in SP1. The current file has a creation date of January 21, 2004.
Any other ideas??
Many thanks,
Joe P

| reply to joepwpb More Information
The folder I am trying to burn to CD contains what I call my "critical files" folder, which I backup each month. One of the items within this folder is my IE Favorites which is where this error occurs each time I try this procedure. I thought that it may be just one "bad" url so I deleted it and tried again but it did not work. So, I removed the Favorites folder from the backup and the operation completed successfully. It may be just a coincidence, but the error occurs within the same Favorites sub folder which contains 138 url's. So, I guess my next task would be to remove this sub folder and try the copy operation again.
Now, does this give anyone any ideas??
Thanks

OK...an idea...Try this.
Windows XP and IE 6 CPU DLL Issues
Having problems with IE6 consuming 100% CPU utilization? I did. This article outlines a solution for this issue that hasn'tt appeared yet in TechNet.
Upon opening an Internet Explorer 6.0 window, CPU utilization for that IE session would jump to 99%. The following would also appear in the System Event log:
Exception was generated at
Faulting module mshtmled.dll
If left alone, the window would sometimes finish opening after 10 minutes or so. This problem seemed to occur randomly. I never could put my finger on a conflicting program or specific web page that I was trying to open.
It appears that the installation of some of the Windows XP security updates causes registration problems for some DLLs. The fix is to reregister them using the following commands:
Regsvr32 shdocvw.dll Regsvr32 shell32.dll Regsvr32 oleaut32.dll Regsvr32 actxprxy.dll Regsvr32 mshtml.dll Regsvr32 urlmon.dll
To simplify the registration of these DLLs, block copy all of them. Then right click at a DOS command line, select Paste. Each of them should register, causing a success message. -- It's really easy to join one of our Cancer fighting teams. JOIN TEAM HELIX! JOIN TEAM DISCOVERY UD/TSC! |

Yes, I saw this in my search but ignored it because again it did not seem to be relevant. What I did try is a IE repair, which had no effect on the issue.
Is there a downside to doing this? Are there any "backup' measures I should perform before proceeding?
Thanks
Joe P
P.S. In the interim, after trying to write that folder to CD without the Favorites folder, I then tried to copy just the sub folder which appeared to be the "problem' folder in the copy process but it copied fine so that wasn't the issue. |

Ok...I performed that procedure then tried to burn that folder and I got the same error. It appeared to be just a few files away from finishing the temp file creation!!
Any other ideas??
Thanks,

How about running a sfc/scannow from the run menu? It should run this from your SP1 updates and not the CD. |

How do I run the Sfc/scannow from the SP1 file which was a download? What about just replacing that shdocvw.dll from another PC with SP1??

Windows should run the scan from the SP1 file even if it is a download. It changes the location of those files in the registry after you install it. |

I show that file in two locations:
C:\Windows\system32 C:\Windows\system32\dllcache
Each of those files are version 6.0.2800.1400.
Questions: Do those numbers square with the files on your system? (I'm assuming that you're running SP1)
If I choose to pull that file from another PC should I replace it in both locations?
Thanks

Does this only happen when writing to cd and you're using xp's built in program?? |

Yes, this error only occurs when I am writing to a CD using XP's built-in program. It is not actually doing the writing at the point of error, it is only creating the temporary file to be copied. As I previously stated, (check my third and fourth post) I am performing a function which I do every month to backup my "critical" files. Also, ironically, it happens within the Favorites folder which I am trying to copy.
I am currently waiting for my nephew to send me the file replacement.
Needless to say it is strange!!!

| reply to joepwpb ***Update***
I replaced the file from another PC and tried to copy that folder again but I encountered that same error. I removed the Favorites folder from the folder to be copied and it was successful. So, it appears that it has something to do with url's.
