| Rosencrantz, Guildenstern and Tom Stoppard
Went to see Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead Saturday night. Since the play opened in NYC from London in the 1960s and played for years, thought this would be an appropriate place for comments. Besides a lot of my BBR friends I know come here and one asked for a review hi. ...
First off, I recommend revisiting Hamlet prior to seeing the play (at least the Cliff's notes:) ) as it has some "inside jokes" in the dialogue. I had to spend some time today reacquainting myself with Danish politics:D
For the less than erudite theatergoers like me, I found R&G to require close attention. The games and wordplay are brilliant but subtle. I had to get to now the characters, which tool a good piece of the first act. The rest of the time was entertaining, thoughtful, funny and sad. The performance was excellent. Hats off to the cast and crew!
I love community theater. the one we like best is small, holding at best a hundred or so people - Perfect for such a presentation. The audience is one of neighbors, friends, occasional out of town visitors and friends of the cast and crew. No IDs needed for our tickets at "will call". Jim knows everybody and has the tickets ready by the time we get to the ticket window. Ya gotta love it!
LTOB( »www.ltob.org/ltob.php ) is an impressive bunch of people. They are not afraid to try anything and I have never seen a bad production there but I have seen lots of good ones over the years. We have visited other community theaters over the years and this is definitely the best of its size and compares favorably with those of larger cities and bigger budgets.

1 edit | Ok I think you might have the wrong forum, since this play isn't showing in NYC and this is the NYC forum o_O
Edit: Wasn't trying to insult anyone, just making a comment on it not being currently in NYC, cause after reading that I kinda wanted to see it. But Ohio is sorta far. |

| reply to lilhurricane Hi Lil!
I saw it at the location you mentioned Grove City, Ohio - I was really wondering where I'd post it - the play is a bit esoteric, but given its U.S. "birth" in NYC and New Yorkers' love of the arts and theater - as well as my friends in this forum - I hoped it would be something that was appreciated here. Per suggestion from Nikita (BTW no insult taken! ) I checked and it looks like no one in NYC is showing it - bummer - Maybe in Connecticut summer stock??
Well, anyway - If you want a good dose of existentialism and if it shows up in Colleges, community theater or summer stock, check it out. Actually, I find those venues to be a great evening out - and the prices are affordable for students or retirees.
Well, off to beauty sleep. If anyone needs that, it's me.

| reply to EGeezer Great review, EGeezer, thanks! For those of "stuck" in NYC , it's still possible to buy the Richard Dreyfus/Gary Oldman/Tim Roth version on VHS. »www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de···n=507846 Not at all the same, I know, but better than nothing. I've used it in class, and it's a pretty good production. It's nice to be able to rewind for lines you've missed. -- Do you believe to bully me? You damned rogue. By God, it will not be so
