I don't believe that one has ever been published. While WOW currently is running DOCSIS 1.0, I would suggest a modem certified to DOCSIS 1.1 or 2.0.

Support for modems not leased from WOW ($2.50/month) may be limited.

Not trying to hijack the thread here, but is there anyone but me that thinks that $30 per year lease fee for the cable modem to be WOW's problem seems pretty reasonable? I mean even with cable modems getting pretty cheap it would still take a couple years to break even at that price, and if it dies, WOW will replace it. Seems simple to me, so why would one want to own the CM?

Yes, it is very reasonable. But on the other hand, is kinda not fair for those of us who had the service since day one, and were told the modem was free of charge, now becomes another added charge that should not have been added.

Hmm... Maybe I shouldn't say anything, but the last time I checked my WOW statement....

I agree with that point, but I was simply addressing the buy vs. lease issue. It was free when I signed up too.

Don't worry JD, I just got my bill and there is a rental fee on there. The bill just keeps going up and up, for no real reason. They haven't given us customers anything good in a long time.

I do too. Its reasonable since most modems are going to cost $60(since WOW does not qualify for many rebates for new customers like the ones for Comcast and TW) plus with that purchased modem, you will receive very little support nor will you get any new firmware upgrades.

Knowing cable companies, I am not so sure that the charge for the modem will not go up every year just like everything else. I bought a brand new docsis 1.1 modem off ebay for about $17 after shipping. Unless they make a sudden move to docsis 2, I am pretty cetain I made a good decision.

For $17, that is probably a good idea. It would be paid for in 6 months. And if the modem rental fee does go up, I will definitely reconsider my position.

You can get a motorola modem for under $50. I've had mine for nearly 2 years now and it works like a charm.

I have never, ever had a problem with WOW's folks blaming my purchased modem for any connection problems. I'm running a Motorola SB5100, and the two times in two years that I've had issues with the connection, not only was it not a modem problem, the techs cooperated fully and were quite pleased that I was running this modem.

Re: Slow speeds with non-WOW modem?

I've been using WOW's modem for about a year now and have been getting right near my advertised 2000 down/300 up speed. However since they are starting the rental fee, I decided to get my old COX modem out that I paid $100 for and start to use that.

Now during the speed tests I'm getting about 400-500 down/100-200 up! My day to day web surfing seems to be just as fast before but all the tests are running very slow. Is WOW's modem optimized for their network or something? Is there anything I can do (some way to get into my modem setup?) to speed things up? When using this modem with COX I always got around their top speed of 3000.

The new modem is a Toshiba PCX2200 and I'm in the Cleveland market.

Thanks!

FYI:

I called WOW back tonight to have them switch my MAC address back to my WOW modem. I actually got one of the very few good reps and he told me that the lady who switched my MAC address on Saturday did it wrong. Needless to say, with a few keystrokes by the Rep, I'm getting above my 2MB limit with the same Toshiba modem.

So from what I can tell WOW will let you use your own modem? Their website doesnt state much on the subject. Other than you cant use another cable modem from another provider. Which to me sounded like you cant use your own cable modem. Whats the story on this? Sounds like there are people using their own modems on WOW. As long as your modem is DOCSIS 1.0 or 1.1 your safe? I just bought a cable modem from officemax because it was free after rebate. I figured why pay for a rental when you can get the cable modem for free.

Yes, WOW will let you use your own modem, however, there will no support for that modem. Meaning you will not get any firmware upgrades for that modem.

As far as the firmware upgrades? What is that going to get for you when it comes to the speed of the service? If it isnt going to change the speed of the service that is the only thing I would be worried about because if the firmware isnt broke why bother upgrading it. Unless I guess if they goto DOCSIS 2.0 then my modem is worthless anyway. Although for free I wouldnt much care as long as I get a year out of it.

A firmware upgrade can fix a lot of things. Say there is a glitch with the modem playing a certain game online, or that the modems timing is slightly off and the modem keeps disconnecting from the network due to a timing issue with the CMTS. There are a ton of reasons to have a modem that is fully upgradeable by the ISP. I guess, if there is a major problem you will have to call the manufacturer of the modem, and get the to give you a new firmware of swap the modem.

Ok, makes sense, Haven't heard of many problems like this but maybe I never knew of such problems because everything is handled in the back ground.
Ah well, Free is good, , I hope it works out ok for me. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, what the hell. If it works fine then great, id not, you can always call and rent a modem right.
