[ADSL] This is frying my brain.

Hi, My problem is this. I have AOL 512 BB.When using p2p such as Overnet or ED2K I cannot stay connected for more than 2 hours.AOL disconnects and I get the error msg INIT PACKET cannot be acknowledged. I have reinstalled AOL + Modem drivers.I have changed my filter, I even went as far as formatting my HDD but to no avail.Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

The question has to be asked is: Why on Earth would you have AOL in the first place?

Get with a proper service provider and the problem will go away.

Before BB came to my area I was with Tiscali Anytime but when it eventually came and I wanted their BB I was told they would downgrade me to Pay as you Go, while I waited up to 3 weeks for my BB package to arrive which I found unacceptable as I use the internet constantly.Cable and various other isp's are not available here yet so it was either AOL or BT Openworld.Case of devil and the deep blue sea.I think I chose the devil But does anyone have any ideas what I can do. Thanks.

Hi Valleygirl - Perhaps AOL just don't WANT you P2P for more than 2 hours at a time. Is it possible that there could be some arrangement between AOL and line suppliers/phone companies to restrict this type of use? Just a shot in the dark, and probably missing by a mile. Just being my usual cynical self. Regards

Have you tried contacting tech support? What I would do is not tell them you are using P2P make something up, eg some legit download, and say that you cannot stay connected longer than the 2 hours. Mention that you have tried this at various times and it always happens.

Then you can state that your always on connection is not always on and you want some explanation why it is not.

Hiya
Firstly, thanks for the reply's.Yes I contacted their online tech support who sent me a list of things to try which I did, but did not work.I tried a few things last night and have managed to stay on so far without babysitting it.I ran a TraceRoute which seemed ok.I installed Nortons Utilities, disabled my firewall (bad move I know) made some changes to my p2p program and reconfigured my network settings.I dont know which one has worked (unless it disconnects tonight) so its process of elimination I guess.

P.S. If anyone finds my packets can you return them please

You'll need to go round to AOL's headquarters for your lost packets and search through the Skip loads of them round the back

I'd guess about 20% of all their packets end up there So take your tent.... you could be there a while.
