DLP TV - Comcast HD - and my issues!!!

Hey,

I own an DLP TV and decided to try out Comcast HD before I decided to upgrade my Direct TV box to support HD. Using my current Direct TV box (Sony) my signal is terrible (I am using an S-Video cable which is the best choice I have on this model). The image quality is poor, not sharp and clear, Text at times can be unreadable. So I thought by going to Comcast and using their new Motorola HD receiver I would gain a better image. I was wrong. The HD signal is great, the images are clear and sharp like they should be but the digital and analog channels are a notch above in quality as my Direct TV signal.

So now I am in a position of what I am going to do next? I have thought about calling Direct TV and seeing if they would allow me to test one of the new HD receivers coming out later this month and see if the new Digital processors clean up the images on my TV. I also have considered looking into the new service VOOM but sill doing some research on them. I did read a post that suggested splitting the signal and putting a direct feed into the TV and us its turner and see if that helps improve the quality, I have not done this, I will test it out tonight and will let you know how it went, this however seems a little more work then needed when I am paying for a service and expect good quality.

Just frustrating (and seems like I am not the only one on this message board) to buy a nice TV and outside of HD channels get poor quality.

If more and more people are starting to invest in DLP, Plasma, LCD style TV’s and each one gets the same quality from digital and analog signals and only around 10 -12 true HD channels (which varies between the cable/Satellite providers) something will need to be addressed and improved or people are going to start saying “and why did I just spend $$$$ on this TV and only get a few HD channels that look good and the rest of the channels look bad now, when they looked good on my old tube TV ? !!!! “, I would not want to be the store having to try and explain this one!!

Come on Comcast, Direct TV, Dish Network, VOOM……lets correct this issue!!!!

I think it probably varies depending on what TV you have -- I've got a Sony LCD RP and every channel looks spectacular. Of course the HD looks tons better than the regular channels, but even the regular channels look good to me. My Xbox looks phenomenal, on 480i,480p, and 720p games. I'm ridiculously happy with my TV. Which is why, I guess, Circuit City has only raised the price for it over the last 3 months..

For what it's worth, my setup is:
Sony Grand Wega KF42WE610
Motorola 5100 HD box, DVI cable to the TV, s-video to the Tivo(s-video from the Tivo to the TV), split b-channel for PIP, coax digital to my receiver for digital sound
Xbox - component cables to the TV, optical cable to my receiver for digital sound

Re: TiVo Series 2 connection: Newbie Post

I have to believe its more of a Comcast issue. I have the signal totally bypassing the 6208 and its just as bad on my HD set as it is with the box.
I am seriously looking at VOOM as I can now get a box and they look like the only way to get HD with zero down
The Dish Direct deal requires a receiver, which I dont have and dont have the money to get

When is the last time you checked? Firmware 7.07 enables DVI on the 5100, 6200, and 6208 - there is extensive discussion about it at »www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre···d=194404

NBA Tv?

Kcharg or anyone else in the know?

Comcast announced a deal with NBA TV two days ago and some regions already have launch dates. Any word of when it's coming here?

Not where I am - It has been enabled for probably a month now. I even had my box replaced recently, and it is enabled on the new box as well.

I can promise you that the DVI is not enabled on my 5100. I had my 5100 installed in January and it has not worked yet.

I will have to check the firmaware when I get home.

I am not sure yet. I will drop a person an email at my company that should know.

@comcast.net
Is anybody getting the call backs from comcast on the HD DVR or are they just trying enough CSRs until you get one that is cooperative? I was promised a callback by a supervisor and nothing since friday!

There are some rumors that Comcast will add some new HD channels later this month-- maybe Discovery HD and/or Bravo HD ???

But definitely not HDNet (unfortunately).

Heard anything?

@comcast.net

Analog

While my SD channels still look poor, I would say they got better after the new box was "burned in" for a day. On day 2 some things looked better.

Also, I've heard the WEGA LCD tv's do the best of handling the analog and SD signals over all the other HD tv's. Anybody else had this experience?

zakman

@cypresscom.ne

no more 6208s

update: after calling and talking to a manager and asking why I never got a callback on the 6208. I ended up pretty much getting a "sorry we screwed you, but we are not going to do anything about it" and had to sign up for the standard HD box instead. There is no waiting list, etc.

oh well...

grats to all the ones that got the 6208s!

From an insider I can guarantee you that the new channels will not be Discovery and HDnet. I am yet to hear anything regarding Bravo. I am still thinking that the next channels will be InHD 1 & 2 (www.inhd.com) and possibly PBS HD. I am emailing a VP right now. I will let you know their response.

Re: HDTV and Kcharg

Kcharg,

Please ignore the idiotic posts on this thread and don't hold it against the rest of us who appreciate your efforts to keep us informed over the last 4-5 months. I know for a fact that people on other forums track this thread for news on Comcast HD as it relates to the D/FW market.

Comcast has made fast progress in the area of HDTV since launcing in D/FW last November. Personally, I'm very happy that I cancelled a pending DISH order and went w/ Comcast believing that they would rapidly make up ground in the HD race.

I agree, I just found this forum yesterday, and living in Rowlett, I think its great to have someone on the inside of the local Comcast office to share information.

I read thru this thread yesterday, and emailed kcharg about the 6802 evaluation, and he advised me to contact a csr, I called the 1800comcast number to inquire as to availability, and there were 3 available, Comcast is scheduled to come out and install it tomorrow. So if you are still interested in a 6802 in the Garland area....pick up the phone!

thanks to all for the info in this thread.

I called two days ago and was told there were plenty available, but only customers who had been with Comcast for one year would qualify. This is very frustrating because I dropped dish in November (along with my dvr) because I was told by Comcast that the dvr's would be available by January 2004. Also I had called several times since the first of the year and was told each time that I was being put on a callback list only to be told last night that there really was no callback list. Ever. They were just telling people that there was a callback list. Maybe this csr was lying, or maybe they were just being brutally honest, I don't know. Has anybody else ever received a callback? If it's not available to me by May I'm going to switch back to Dish.

I was on the phone with Comcast as I read your post. First I called the national 1-800-COMCAST number and was told that they should be getting more 6208 boxes in our market by month end. The CSR offered to put me on a "priority" call back list, which I went along with.

I hung up and contacted the number for our local Comcast office. The CSR I ended up with said that only customers of at least a year were getting the 6208 right now. I said that makes sense, but what about customers who subscribe to your highest level of programming (Platinum) plus Internet? That seemed to strike a chord with her.

She said she'd see what she could do and put me on hold. Several minutes later she returned and said she was unable to locate her boss so she was going to go ahead and place an order for me. To my delight I am scheduled for a Sunday installation.

Maybe I just got lucky and caught a good CSR. The moral of the story is that the first "no" you hear may not be final. Stay on them and make your case in a polite manner. They want your business and realize that demand far exceeds supply right now.

I'm glad to hear that you've had good luck on your DVR wishes. Let us know how things go this Sunday.
