| reply to apvm I already run SuSE 9.0 and I'm happy with it, but I hope the mods don't move this as off-topic since I'd like to see as many new people exposed to the joys of Linux as possible.

You don't have to download it today, wait a few days and the speed should then be fine. |

1 edit | reply to apvm Funny 'cause I was just reading up on Lindows too 'cause I've been curious to how Linux operates. I'm getting bored of windows. I need a challenge, so I'm downloading it now. Although I'm in a line of 140, I guess it's worth the wait. Thanks for the info apvm. |

| forgive my ignorance with this... until now, I've always run windows apps on a win2k machine, and run unix stuff on various freebsd machines. I have a gentoo linux box running now as my "windows machine" and I'm curious if you can simply install Lindows ontop of my existing install, or is this only a standalone OS?
Call me crazy, but I think that in it's infancy, you simply installed lindows on any machine that had linux already installed. Am I misinformed, or was it really like that at some point?
I agree with apvm though. People SHOULD get to know the alternative graphical environments. Having more exposure would ultimately lead to better applications. I'm quite disappointed thus far with the quality of apps for linux's various windows environments. -- Windows is the virus. Linux is the vaccine, FreeBSD is the CURE |

| reply to apvm Lindows is a totally stand alone OS. I've never tried it, but it supposedly has a few features that make it relatively painless for Ex-Windows users to operate. Then again in the »All Things Unix forum here on DSLR, it's not the most highly regarded distro either. Supposedly it's a little lax with things like running processes at user level that should only be accessible as root.
If anyone out there is really looking to get started on the Linux experience, I'd suggest trying some of the Live-CD distros like Knoppix, or free distros like Fedora Core 1, Mandrake or Suse, and when you really feel adventurous, start rolling your own with distros like Gentoo or Debian... -- AFTER the pin is pulled, Mr. Grenade is no longer our FRIEND...»www.fuzzyrat.com |

1 edit | reply to apvm Hmm... Suse or Mandrake? *thinks*
I'v been kind of worried about switching to linux, but as I read more information about it, it sounds quite exciting.
Only if I had another hardrive to install it on.
How much room does Mandrake or Suse take up. I have a 40GB HD. (38MB using NTFS) -- I found reason for me to change who I used to be, a reason to start over new and the reason is you. - Hoobastank |

| reply to Airwolf A full Linux install takes about 3 - 5 gigs, plus allow yourself another couple of gigs for your home directories and your user files.
Linux can read and write FAT32 just fine but when it comes to NTFS it can read it ok but any writes would probably corrupt your file system beyond repair.
In your case, the best bet would be to resize your NTFS partition to about 30 Gigs and leave the rest as unpartitioned space for Linux to install to. Alternatively you could just install a second HD and install Linux there.
In an ideal dual boot setup, you'd have your Win setup on a NTFS partition, then a FAT32 partition for sharing files between the two OSes and finally a native Linux partition on the remaining space.
Easiest options for resizing existing partitions are to use a utility like partition magic or do a ghost image of your NTFS drive and restore it to a smaller partition after resizing with Fdisk. -- AFTER the pin is pulled, Mr. Grenade is no longer our FRIEND...»www.fuzzyrat.com |

The only pain is installing all my apps again on Windows. |

That would be perfectly acceptable. Assuming that you have no real need to use NTFS over FAT32, that would allow your Linux install to read and write your windows drive. Don't expect windows to be able to see the Linux partition though. M$ is "color blind" when it comes to alternative OSes
At the risk of going too far Off Topic here though, I'd suggest that you start asking questions about Linux in the »All Things Unix Forum...

1 edit | reply to apvm If it's past 12:00 a.m. EST... the download won't work. What you have to do... is set your BIOS clock... so that it's before 12:00 a.m. EST... then the download should work. I'm not sure that it will work if the time is past 3:00 a.m. (12:00 a.m. PST).
EDIT: O and by the way... thanks for the download instructions APVM ! |

No, you don't need to buy membership...the download is for the free O/S, there are a lot of freeware around for the OS, just search the net for them..enjoy. |

Click in run is really just a front end for APT (Lindows is based on Debian). You can edit your apt repositories and then update from any available repository you like.
For those other questions:
Lindows is a "standalone" OS, it is not an upgrade or shell for another Linux.
You can install it along side Windows (on a separate partition) or another version of Linux, BSD, whatever. -- I cannot deny anything I did not say |
