| Upload Speed?
Right now I have the 768/down 128/up package through charter. I'm really happy with the reliable connection that I've been receiving, however when I upload files to my ftp server, it takes a VERY long time over the 128k up speeds. (That's about 8 kb/ sec. upload after overhead.)
There has been lots of talk concerning charter's potential upgrades in regards to their download speed, however none of that has taken place here in California. (To the best of my knowledge, someone correct me if I'm wrong.)
Is it possible to purchase additional bandwith for home accounts on the upload speed for folks like me that need to upload huge files (entire websites to remote servers, remote administration, media files for magazines etc.)?
Not everyone that requests extra upload speed is into the P2P scene, I understand charter's concern for not allocating more bandwith to the average user, however is there any option available to folks who are willing to use the extra pipe for legal purposes?
If not, where would I write to try and make our (I'm sure I'm not alone on this) concerns heard by the charter reps in charge of the tier settings?

| reply to TheSaint Here is what I was quoted a short while ago for CBN services:
768/256 $89.95/mo 1.5/384 $129.95/mo 2.0/512 $169.95/mo
These prices are for a 2 year committment, and a 1 year was quoted as being an additional $12/mo.
Like yourself, I find the 128 upload to be very slow and restrictive especially since I am not a heavy downloader.
The low upload unfortunately complicates my use of VoIP since it requires 90 kbs of b/w. |

Thanks for the headsup, where did you hear of the upgrades? I was only aware of talk of a 2.0 mb download upgrade.

90 k/b of bandwith for VIOP? Wow, that's some heavy duty bandwith useage. I use a little program called Skype, but it doesn't allow computer to phone conversations yet, but it uses much less bandwith with very good sound quality. |

I live in SLO and have checked into getting higher upload speeds. Unfortunately, that takes a business account, which costs quite a bit more than is offered for the standard home account.
Haven't heard anything about even getting an upgrade to 256k.
Have you checked getting SBC/Yahoo?. Have a friend at work(who lives in Atascadero, by the way..) that got it and she's quite happy with it. Haven't gone to her house yet to do speed tests, so when I get the results, I'll post them. |

| reply to TheSaint Right now I'm on the line with SBC to see how far their CO is from my house. Last time I check though, their network wasn't able to support anything higher than 384/64 in my area, the CO is a good 10k from my home. It wouldn't hurt if Charter had a little friendly competition from SBC and other DSL providers, hopefully boosting up their speed tiers or lowering their prices. I just got off the phone with SBC, they have nothing on the radar in terms of bring a CO closer to my home, the rep I talked with says its a whopping 15k away!
Anyways, I guess from a business standpoint, it wouldn't make any sense for Charter to offer better speeds when the other kids on the block aren't going compete. Short of provisioning a T1 line, there really isn't much one can do if you life on the outskirts of the city and DSL is /not available/too slow to compete with cable. I wonder if there is any other type of alternative internet in this area like fixed point wireless? |

| reply to TheSaint Update: I called Charter today and they said that they would upgrade my download speed to 2mb (from 768k) and lower my bill $10 per month!
The tech I also talked to mentioned that Charter might bump up the upload speed up a bit in comming months, but couldn't make any gurantees. It would be very easy now to complain about not getting enough upload speed, but I'm going to try and stay happy for at least a few days with the price reduction and the speed increase. -- The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.--- Edmund Burke |

the anemic upload is maddening. i've already bailed from my "grandfathered" so-ho account because it was pointless with a 128k upload, but now i'm faced with the problem of trying to manage my co-lo'd server over this pathetic connection. charter has, in effect, forced me to bundle all my server changes onto a portable hard drive, bring it into work, and steal my company's bandwidth to manage my personal server.
earlier today i was showing my father how to upload photos taken during his service in vietnam to a photo website from his SBC DSL-connected PC. the time was excruciating for the 1200dpi print-ready photos. he was stunned when i told him that my upload speed with Charter Pipeline was *half* of his with SBC DSL. |

| I so heartily agree. Today I sent a client a 1 MB QuarkXPress file and a 500K pdf and 2 tifs that were 2 MB each--I thought I'd grow old and gray waiting for them to upload. I am tired of hearing how people only want a higher upload for P2P--many of us NEED it for legitimate purposes such as yours and mine.

Charter *had* the answer at one point - their So-Ho account. it was exactly what i needed - decent upload, (relatively) affordable, and accommodated low-volume in-home servers. it was comfortably positioned between the average "consumer" account and the full-blown business accounts.
then some genius in management thought it would be a fabulous idea to herd all users into the same consumer corral and "universalize" the service. without warning. basically, to paraphrase a Microsoft ad, one morning i woke up and "Suddenly, Everything Sucked." and i was left to scramble and suffer.
shortly afterward i canceled my charter cable TV service (who needs TV anyway - it's a polluted wasteland). recently, having given up on the idea that charter might deign to serve this market again, i canceled my crippled, grandfathered so-ho account and got the co-lo, but as i mentioned in an earlier message, while it's a LOT better for me and others to *use*, i'm still tethered to it with this ridiculous 128K upload speed. There are no other broadband options in my area.
Monopoly: great work if you can get it.

Business or no business, Charter's 128k upload is still behind every major cable ISP in the nation to the best of my knowledge in terms of price/bandwith allocated.
