| G650/revC - WPA?
I'm a bit confused about WPA-PSK on the G650/Rev C.
In the G650 KB, under Security/WPA: ***************** Encryption WPA DWL-G650 Revision A WPA Support How do I install the WPA supplicant driver version 2.36? ************* Step 1 Download the 2.36 drivers located at »support.dlink.com/products. Choose you product and the supplicant is located under Applications. ************* When you choose the product per the instructions, there is no supplicant driver under applications for the Rev C. In fact, there is no application folder. However, the rev B G650 has the Application/supplicant driver.
Does Rev C need the 2.36 supplicant driver or is that strictly for Rev B?
Just for grins, I tried WPA-PSK after I upgraded the DI-624/Rev C1 to f/w v2.36 (from 2.28). With G only and static turbo, I only saw a xmit rate of 18.0 Mbps vs 108 Mbps I see when using WEP/128 bit.
My G650 has f/w v 3.17. I have not d/l the 2.36 supplicant driver. Do I need it? |

1 edit | Speedlever, you do not need the WPA Supplicant for G650(C1) as it is built in. You only need the supplicant for G650(Bx) cards. I'm using 2.28 with WPA-PSK (and have great speeds also) so once I upgrade to 2.36, I will test the phone and the super g turbo static Mbps speed with WPA-PSK enabled and let you know.
By the way did you see my post under »DI-624 revision C New Firmware! with regards to your 2.4 GHz phone?
Thanks in advance! |

| SoCal99,
I replied to the other thread about the phone.
I thought Rev.C had the SPA supplicant built in. Which was why I was curious about their instructions. Must be a boilerplate instruction.
I should try WPA-PSK again and see if I still see the restricted xmit rate under static turbo/G only.
Thanks for clarifying the WPA/REV C issue for me. I'll post to this thread what results I find when I try it again. |

| reply to speedlever I'll condense everything into this thread as it is only you and I here now.
1st, ok it so its the Spread Spectrum technology that is making the unit reboot (in my case). I understand why the SS techn would interfere with the super g wireless (there loosely based on the same concept) but I don't know why it would cause in to reboot (in my case).
2nd, My 624 does reboot when someone is using the phone or even if it just rings, the lites on the unit all turn off and then back on. Then the log entry is reset to page one and the date and time in the log entries are reset to April 1st 2002 midnight. And as long as someone is on the phone the unit reboots every 20 seconds or so. But this doesn't seem to be the case in your unit, right? Yours just disconnects all the computers from the network, resets the logs but keeps the current date and time, correct? Does it do this with both 2.28 and 2.36? And does it reset only once or many times during a phone call?
3rd, when I do disable super g static the problem goes away but I lose all the benefits of super g. Also, I have a 624(C2) with 2.28 fw and a G650(C1) with 3.17 drivers (with XP,H) and my laptop auto connects to the network after rebooting every time, but if I loose the connection (which has only happen twice in 3 weeks so far). A rescan won't connect the laptop back again and the only way to get reconnected is to reboot the laptop.
Lastly, besides the decrease in super g static Mbps speed (very bad) and the passing of the targa3 test (very good) have you seen any difference with 2.36 fw? Are you dropping the wireless connection Every 60 secs like others? Anything else strange or better? |

| Here's the equipment: 1) Main PC (XP/h - sp/1) hardwired to #1 LAN port of the DI-624/Rev C1/fw 2.36.
2) Laptop (XP/pro - sp/1) wireless connection with G650/Rev C1/fw 3.17.
3) Upstairs PC (XP/pro - sp1) wireless connection with G520/Rev B1/fw 3.17.
** My router log is currently 14 pages long and shows the correct time. (going back just over 2 hours). I just opened up the laptop and brought it out of suspend/hibernation. The G650 card searches for a few seconds and the laptop is immediately on the network and can access the internet.
The phone just rang and while my wife answered, I ran back into the office to observe what happened when she answered with the cordless. Nothing at all. (what originally clued me the other day was when I happened to notice the bubble msgs while she was on the cordless in another room).
This time, the phone was used in an adjacent room about 20-25 feet away with one wall intervening and no interruption was noted. So I brought the phone into the office and got a dial tone up. Within a few seconds, I saw the network cable disconnected bubble msgs. The router logs showed all pages (16 pgs at that point) cleared and an apparent reboot, from the router log perspective. The router lights did not go off, but along with the bubble msgs I saw the red-X'd connection icons in the systray. The time and date remain correct, unless it corrects itself in short order. The dates on the reset log entries are correct.
The phone conversation did not last long enough for me to see if the bubble msgs continue to pop up. I don't think I'm observing 2.36 to exhibit any different behavior than 2.28 in this particular regard. But I'm sort of a latecomer to being aware of the 2.4 GHz phone problem on my end. I thought I didn't have that problem.. until very recently.
The laptop system event viewer shows network connector adapter connections about every 60 seconds or so.. with an occasional disconnect followed about 10 seconds later with a reconnect. Perhaps that coincides with my use of the cordless phone. I dunno.
Operationally, I don't see this or it hasn't adversely affected me yet. The disconnect/reconnects may be happening too quickly for my network/internet usage to be affected unless I was in the process of d/l a file or somesuch.
On your point 3, how/why do you lose the laptop connection? When my laptop loses the connection (I shut the lid), it is immediately re-established when I open the laptop lid, well, after just a couple seconds of re-establishing the link. The G650 card goes from dark, to the lights alternately flashing, to both flashing together within just a few seconds and I'm back up with no rescan or reboot required.
The only time I observed a decrease in superG static Mbps speed was when I briefly tried WPA-PSK security. I'm right back to 108 Mbps when I go to WEP/128 bit. I do not draw any conclusions yet since I only tried it that one time.
Well this is just crazy. I've had numerous interruptions as I've written this, so it's taking me a while to complete this msg. I just made a phone call in the office with the cordless and never once got a msg bubble. The router log is intact as if nothing happened, which is, in point of fact, what happened... nothing. Go figure. The laptop system event viewer shows the usual 60 second network adapter connection and no interruptions.
I don't seem to be dropping the connection, just getting a re-lease every 60 seconds. I don't know if there's a difference or not, but I am not finding any operational problem due to the 60 second re-leases. Maybe I would if I was transferring a large file, but for web browsing, I don't even notice.
Well, ok. Targa3 attack is fixed. No rescan after OS reboot required. [shrug] The only negative I see is the router log filling up with re-leases. I've not noticed any spontaneous reboots other than when I cleared the router log with the 2.4GHz phone an hour ago.
My conclusion is more gain than loss, moving from 2.28 to 2.36. Unless something else pops up. Unless the 60 second log entries are symptomatic of larger problem.
Maybe we're (collectively) too eager to jump on something and pronounce a problem here. Whatcha think? |

| Update.
I just tried the cordless phone again.. dial tone only.. no incoming or outgoing call.
Now I see that *every* light except the power light on the 624 goes out. I did not notice (or see) that before. It now appears we share a common problem.
After the lights go out, I see the bubble msgs appear.
Sheesh. Perhaps I just haven't been observing closely enough.
This is crazy. I just received a call and the router rebooted during the ring process. I have not observed that before. I was on the phone about 2.5 minutes and the router rebooted several times. Earlier today, I was on the phone a similar amount of time and did not see any interruption at all.
I cannot make any sense of this. |
