| Worst PC I have seen yet.
Worked on a coworkers home PC @ lunch. Adaware found over 1100 entries and his Norton 2002 has not been updated since 7/15/02. He doesn't understand why I tell him he should really format and start over
What a freakin mess. Every peice of crap you could imagine was on there. Worst one I have seen yet |

| I see that sort of thing all the time on my co workers computers... They are jealous of the way I never seem to get infected, yet if I attempt to clean their 'puters for them, they give me a look similar to what a "victim to be" would look like if I was a "serial murderer...." You'd really think I was "Ted Bundy", given the way they react..LOL... It's impossible to deal with them, so I try hard not to even bother anymore... -- I'm Mad With Power! |

| reply to mboy Yup, I usually charge a good chunk of change for it. This was a little freebie and the LAST I might add. Well, if he finds he needs a reformat (he very well may) he is going to pay at least $100 for the privilege |

| I just had a similar "freakin mess" of a machine that I agreed to take a look at. Trojans running rampant and spawning at each reboot, 30-second pauses trying to do anything, pop-ups all over the place, spyware galore, a plethora of running processes... I reformatted the damn thing with 7 DOD passes and bought a KAV license for the client. You should've seen the Hijackthis log! That's the last freebie I do. And you know what? It'll happen again, just give it time. Hopefully KAV with its nightly autoupdate will help keep this guy clean. |

Haa! Hey, wait SS, didn't Mr. Bundy _have_ a bit more hair though...?
I know what you mean. Some are appreciative, and want to learn how to prevent recurrences. Some are appreciative but don't really want to learn anything, especially if they do not associate any "cost" with either the potential exposure, or the "mop-up". And then some are just as you say, once, and once only. |

Ok, second question. Do they come to your and do you go to them? (I don't charge my family either, or wouldn't consider it).

I don't charge but I have gotten to the point if they run P2P I tell them to take it somewhere else as self inflicted stupidity is more then I can handle anymore.
In reality you (and me) should be charging for this as it is a service that takes time and expertise so charging for it is the same as taking your car in and getting it serviced, I don't imagine many of us know good mechanics that work for free. Money isn't evil is just a holder in our barter system (I trade you computer services for money which I trade to someone else for groceries).

| reply to mboy when I checked my cousin's Win98 family PC in Sea Cliff, Adaware found over 500 entries (around 300 or more cookies). The problem was, the machine's HDD was going nuts quaratining it all cause the machine just has 128mb of RAM! I just hope all the crap was removed successfully. Also, the machine has Norton 2000 or 2001 on it with EXPIRED virus definitions on it.
I also secured my cousin Matt's laptop, by installing spywareblaster/adaware/spybot S&D/MVPS HOSTS file and turning off essential junk services such as messenger and UnPNP on his machine. His machine was very clean when I scanned it (only a few tracking cookies). -- Randmap for Half-Life & mods Firefox Sven Co-op, co-op mod for HL! |

| reply to Link Logger I charge no less then $75 to even bring a PC home to look at, then it goes up from there. I don't charge family and only rarely do I not charge a friend. Something sinmple like this (or so I thought) I could do at lunch, I won't charge. If I take it home, I am charging. If I have to come to you, expect to pay upards of $200. |

| reply to mboy My family members and friends usually reimburse me for tech support. I have never requested payment. I enjoy going the extra mile. I started refusing payment but instead of cash I started getting gift certificates or little presents. I think a personal touch really helps. Many people are fed up with customer support be it dell or aol and for people to have someone who genuinely cares seems to mean something. |

| reply to mboy Where I work, we provide on site service only so we don't bring computers back for cleanouts. Our rate is hourly at 75.00 per hour for clients within a 35 mile radius. Most machines that are gunked up with this crap are really gunked up and take anywhere from 1 - 5 hours to perform a good cleanout and install any necessary proggies, and/or to provide a training lesson on the do's and don'ts. Obviously it takes us less time to clean for people who have broadband, more time for the (ugghhh) dial up users. |
