I put together a VoIP Guide/Cookbook/FAQ: »nanodev.com/voip/voip-guide.htm
Hopefully it will save VoIP newcomers some time.
The VoIP Guide is linked to this thread, so if you see anything that should be corrected or added, please post it here-- that way, your comments will automatically be available to anyone who reads the VoIP Guide. |

@tiscali.fr | This is a really excellent information source. Very useful to have it all collected in such a concise way.
Thanks. |

| reply to voip247 It would probably help many noobs if you put an explanation somewhere of all the acronyms that are used. Like FWD, DID, SIP, PSTN, etc. -- "Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself." |

| reply to voip247 Nothing about iConnectHere, which is decently integrated into FWD. Not always the best rates unless you get one of their calling plans, but still not bad.

| reply to voip247 For the sake of completeness, in your "Situations & Recommendations" you don't mention VoicePulse, which has been around a lot longer than Broadvox Direct. Actually, if I were doing it, I'd put another line under "I want the best and I'm willing to pay for it." that says something like "Same as above, and having many custom features available is important to me." Then put VoicePulse under that, because they have several unique features that nobody else offers yet (such as their call filters, to name one I can think of).
The one thing I will say is that I suspect you certainly will have your work cut out for you trying to keep this page current, since these days things change so fast. This sort of reminds me, on a smaller scale, of the way the Internet suddenly became popular after the web browser was developed. I think the availability of good, not terribly expensive hardware adapters is doing for VoIP what the web browser did for the Internet, and the growth could occur just as fast if the regulators don't do anything stupid. You may have a full time job keeping this site up to date! |

1 edit | reply to voip247 you seems to have a hater mentality towards cable.
quote: The best way to find a high quality ISP in your area is to ask some kids that play networked computer games. That's because whoever has the lowest latency Internet connection has an unfair advantage in networked computer games. Hint: For VoIP, latency and jitter and uptime matter much more than bandwidth-- that means DSL is usually better than cable.
you kind of back track with quote: Mistakes to Avoid
Getting cable instead of DSL (unless cable is cheaper): In my experience, DSL is much more reliable and gives better VoIP voice quality that cable modem. (Note: This generalization isn't always true, so investigate your ISP on DSL Reports before making a decision.)
quote: For example, most cable modem systems are poorly designed (from a VoIP point of view) because they are set up as a neighborhood-wide shared Ethernet, meaning that whenever your neighbor is downloading MP3 files, you will notice dropped packets in your VoIP phone call. Note: Try to choose a VoIP solution that can communicate over dialup (even if you have broadband)-- you will be surprised how at many people you want to talk to that cannot or will not get broadband.
straight FUD. while DOCSIS1.0 QOS is best effort someone else downloading doesn't cause you to drop packets. for example i can upload and download considerable amounts of data while using the same cable modem my voip does, without any ill affect. why? the upstream path is not saturated on either the cap on my modem or the upstream port on the cmts my modem connects to.
quote: Cable modem: jitter and excessive downtime
umm yeah cable does not have inherent jitter, and excessive downtime is a completely wild assumption.
overall it's great besides the fact that it is riddled with cable hating bias:) -- disclaimer: my opinions are my own, my employer is not responsible. |

| reply to voip247 Is there software one can DL to make calls from your computer for free over IP? I know there once was...maybe a year ago or so...
Also, if I get Vondage, do they provide me software to call from my computer to homes rather than those who are online?

| reply to voip247 I think what he should have clarified about using VoIP with certain HSI Cable providers is their low upload bandwidth (128k in most cases) can cause problems with some VoIP services (Vonage in particular).
Even though I have to agree with matherw about DSL (my personal preference), my current cable service works fine with Vonage .... as long as I am not running too many applications on my PC while on a call. |

| reply to voip247 Your site is awesome! This is the best compilation of voip around and I have been looking. May we have permission to link to it?
Please consider including »www.addavoice.com/ in your voip companies comparison. We would love to see how you think we compare to them.

| reply to voip247 I think it is great. But you will have your work cut out for you trying to keep it current.
You are missing AIM Talk. AOL's IM has voice capabilities too. Also Microsoft's Xbox Live has a great voice communication too. Read more about both here...

| reply to voip247 Great guide, thanks for creating it.
FWIW, I googled for simple VoIP to use with a friend a few weeks ago and came up with:
»www.teamsound.com (like Roger Wilco, reviews better, aimed at gamers, hasn't been updated in a while, works with NT)
»www.teamspeak.org (like Roger Wilco, reviews better, aimed at gamers) |

| reply to voip247 An encyclopedic work (not just because my name is mentioned).
I would like to point out that "Quirky startup (must speak in order to hear)" in FWD Talk is terminal dependent. It is true in case of Windows Messenger, but not true for X-ten. This because some send a null RTP to establish NAT binding for the media stream. |
