| PORT 25 (SMTP) Blocking
For those of you that may not be aware, Frontier is instituting a block on PORT 25 to any external address. The only Port 25 connections allowed are to SMTP.FRONTIERNET.NET
So, if you have a website/mail account with anyone other than Frontier, or if you use the DSLR mail here at this site, you will NO LONGER BE ABLE TO SEND MAIL! Receiving is fine - just don't bother trying to send.
Supposedly, it's to prevent SPAM.
To see the details, go to their "page" at »www.frontiernet.net If it's the first time you've been there, you'll need to enter a zip code. At the top of the main page you'll see the link for the "SERVICE ALERT" - which will end up taking you here: »support.frontiernet.net/port25blocking.html This only impacts "residential" customers - if you have a Fixed IP business account, it does not apply.
It's a good bet that tomorrow AM I will tell them where they can take their block and shove it - just after I place the order for Optimum Online cable internet. -- "Q: When will it be done? A: When pigs fly! " |

| While I do agree that outbound port 25 blocking is annoying (another example of a few morons ruining it for everyone...), you can still send email. Just configure all your email accounts to use smtp.frontiernet.net as your outgoing mail server for each account in Outlook. Your mail will still appear to come from dbmaven (at) dslr.net even though the dslr.net server didn't send it. The only difference will be in the headers, and most people won't even notice.

| reply to pike Preface: Please forgive the following, I REALLY need to blow of some steam.
frontiernet recently decided to block SMTP and apparently ICMP to all outbound addresses. If you want to send email, you MUST user THEIR mail server. You want to have SMTP/ICMP unblocked? Buy a "business" account for double the cost. Give us more money and we will release your ports. Bahstahds!!
This is a jack-booted, knee jerk reaction to stupid user tricks that penalize those of us that keep firewalls up and AV defs up to date. Rather than boot ignorant noobs and fools that should not have a PC off the net they decide to make troubleshooting next to impossible and choice of services away from the rest of us unilaterally. Bloody friggin *%$#!!!!!
To read the frontiernet faq it would seem that they wish us to believe that this is for our own protection. Reference »techsupport.frontiernet.net/port···ing.html
I am upset for several reasons. First, I now have to contend with remote hosts that have my off site mail server white listed. I am now also getting bounces from spam filters that cannot match the frontiernet relay with its apparent sending host. Reverse lookup fails. A common anti spam test.
Secondly, there is no apparent enforcement against noobs and others that are ignorant of firewalls and AV software. Stick it to us all instead.
Third, I want to use my own email services. I should not be required to use frontier equipment if I choose not to. I am not a spammer, I do not send bulk or commercial email. Just personal stuff.
Fourth, ICMP has mysteriously stopped working outbound. I cannot traceroute anywhere. My firewall is registering a tremendous number of ICMP hits FROM all over the planet, but it is to better protect me??
Fifth, I never received any notification from frontiernet to warn me of the change. No snail mail, email or phone call. Just stops working one day.
I do not host any servers or open ports of any kind, that is not in compliance with the ISP AUP that I agreed to when I signed up. I respect and understand frontiernet's right to run their network their way, but give me a break. They are acting like the PITA telco they are more and more every day. |
