| [Vonage] Problem faxing to local numbers
Setup: RR cable modem.....Linksys router....Cisco ATA 186 I can fax to any long distance number with no problem..... but I can not connect to any fax machine within my local area code,I get a dial tone and then my fax machine ( HP d145 multi function) shows "connecting" but it never does connect. We must dial the area code for any local calls here. Any ideas? Thank you in advance |

| reply to retla12w This is probably a dumb reply... but, are you remembering to dial a "1" plus the area code and phone number, even though it's local?
I don't have Vonage yet, but I seem to remember reading somewhere on their website that you have to dial a "1" even if it's a local call. |

And you hear the fax tone calling the local fax number?
And like above 11 digit dialing always. 14.4kbps max but 9600 is safer.
Cisco 186, I've not sent many, but no problems at 9600. Not sure how "local" would be different?-- Jim -- USA2K ... VoIP on FWD & Vonage ... SEE: »www.usa2k.net PSTN is a Legacy Gateway to VoIP, the new "phone service" |

| The only thing comes to mind is that locally, they are negotiating too high a baud rate? said by HP SITE: ITU-T Group 3 fax with Error Correction Mode 33.6 Kbps fax capability
What is annoying is the lack of lowering fax machine baud rate settings -- Jim -- USA2K ... Voip on FWD & Vonage ... SEE: »www.usa2k.net PSTN is a Legacy Gateway to VoIP, the new "phone service" |

| reply to retla12w You CAN lower the fax rate to 9600, but you have to call HP to learn how do this. They don't publish it anywhere and the settings are very cryptic. Make sure to write them down if you do call as you will probably be charged for support and won't want to call them again if you want to change them back. |

That was true for older Cisco software. It forced G.711 and turned off silence suppression. Should not be needed now AFAIK. -- Jim -- USA2K ... Voip on FWD & Vonage ... SEE: »www.usa2k.net PSTN is a Legacy Gateway to VoIP, the new "phone service" |

If it helps - great - if not - it doesnt seem to hurt anything |

| reply to Hooper Here are the instructions that I got from HP Online Tech Support:
1. Press * and # at the same time, and then release both keys 2. Press 1, 2, and then 3, releasing each key before pressing the next. The display window should read "Service" with a revision number. 3. Press the right arrow button once. The display should read "System Configuration". 4. Press Enter. 5. Press the right arrow button until "r/w parameter" appears in the display. Press Enter. The display should read "parameter 0" 6. Change 0 to 153 and press enter now. 7. When modifications are complete, press Cancel repeatedly until the date and time appear in the display.
*** This is on the keypad of the HP all in one device *** *** This was tested on an HP Officejet 7110 All in One ***
As this is access to a service menu it isn't published anywhere, but this should correct your fax problems by lowering the baud rate. |

Change it from 26 to 6. But remember this setting lasts only as long as the printer is on.... once it gets turned off, you have to reconfigure it. |
