As noted in an earlier post in this thread: Navigate to your AVG install directory and rename your existing url.ini file to url.iniold.

Copy the following and paste into notepad and save it as url.ini. Put this new file into your AVG install directory. You'll now have 3 options to select from with www.grisoft.com being the default.

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=3

If you are interested there is now a 4th server you can use.

I can't even download the update files. Do they have alternate locations for those files?

Maybe it was set to only scan EXE files. You might not have configured it to do all file types. Also (and I can't remember, since I no longer use it), it may only count the file sizes of those files that are actually scanned.

Makes sense to me , I just didn't look at the sites, they are all avg so that's cool. Plus you hhave alot of traffic so one is not enough to handle it. my problem was that when I ran the scan on avg 6 it said on my user files it could not open them up, so couldn't scan it. Will an update help? Plus it only scanned about 3 gig's. Shouldn't it scan my drive's 20 gig?

I haven't been able to update for the last 5 days. Says there is no connection to the Internet.....but I'm on cable 24/7. Everything else works. I cut and pasted as Name Game suggested and problem gone Updated, re-started and all is well. Thanks for the tip / hint.

With only one, what happens if that one site becomes unavailable to you for any reason?

With more than one, you have more chances of finding one that works at any given moment...

I don't see why you would need 3 download locations. Once you choose an area to download from,( US, overseas,) the info should be the same, why have 3 different locations for updates> can't it be streamed from one site?

Well this topic if fairly old but in reply to Cylon the number of download locations will remain at 1 until you restart the pc or reload AVG Control Center either way. Also be sure that this part "Actual URL=3" equals 3 and not 1 if there is a 1 in there by mistake then you will still have 1 download location.

What server are you trying to d/l from? If you only have the one option from free.grisoft.cz try this.

Navigate to your AVG install directory and rename your existing url.ini file to url.iniold.

I wish that worked for me... All I have not done is reboot the PC itself but only one server shows up for me.

Thanks for reply, I'll install in folders as sugested, also where do i find the post by dp? where do i find the site that rates the virus program? only heard good things from others on avg,except here . any good software out there to check your ftp before you upload to your host?great forum!

It took some time to find those links, but here they are:

1) The link showing comparisons of AV products

»www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/c···ves.html
(click on link above, then select February 2004 report)

2) The disappointing link I had found about AVG

»www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/···?avg.xml

I'm trying out the avg 6.
I have also been using AVG Free. Recently, when servers were busy and I also couldn't get an update, so I tried looking for other software. I found a site that ranked AV programs and was dismayed by AVG's showing.

Now, I'm not sure which free software to use.

perhaps you might consider using a remote access/control program to save you driving over in the future. Since the PC is running Windows Me
Probably not a bad idea...will that work if I have Win98? (NetMeeting)

Yes it will...

You should only need to forward TCP Port 1503 through any firewalls to make this work when calling direct IP to IP... For additional information you can look at the Resource Kit...
