| Need help with AVG 6.0 Free not updating
This is on another PC I was working on for a family member yesterday. I noticed it kept trying to download an update but the date always remained Nov 14 2003. His program version was 6.0.564 and the last update was, indeed Nov. 14 2003 (sorry, I didn't write down the Virus database version...but I think it was something like 339. I had it enabled for automatic updates every 2 days. It just never got past Nov. 14th apparently and cannot get it going.
So, I went to the AVG updates page for 6.0 »www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe
Downloaded the update into the Updates folder and restarted AVG. It was still stuck on Nov 14 and would not feed in the update I downloaded.
Ok - so I figured, maybe the info about needing this 516 (not sure what that is??) has something to do with it, so I went down to the older versions and downloaded this one.
516 Minimum required version 0 Update file d6032lhj.bin Language English Size 3775889 bytes Date 19.01.2004 .................. Put it in the updates folder. Closed down then restarted AVG - it would NOT update.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to do? This PC is about 75 miles away so I thought I would gather any suggestions first and go back over there soon as I can.
My only other thought was to uninstall/reinstall and I've not done that before. Can you just download a new version of AVG and fill in the existing License # for the old one? Or do we have to get a new one and re-register (will it take the same email addy & info that I used on the old one? - they only use the one email address for everything)
When I got home, I checked my version of AVG I keep here and it is Program ver. 6.0.564 as well, but I have the latest virus defs at #356 and dated 19 Jan 2004. So how come I cannot get this AVG on my brother-in-law's PC to update past Nov. 14th.??? 3 edits | Just a shot in the dark CJ. Have him move the following files from the install directory to a temp directory:
version.avg avg6.avi (this is the DB from 11/14/2003) microavi.avg (he may not have this file) miniavi.avg (he may not have this file)
plus everything from the Updates directory.
Then try to do an update from within the program. I just tested this out and I was able to get the latest program version (564) as well as the latest DB (356). -- Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me |

I was able to download a new copy and use my old license without any problems three months ago.

| reply to CalamityJane thanks dp....I'll give that a try.
Also, Thanks to Just Basics (so I can get new one if need be...we did record all the License info and save it). I helps to know that will work
Skipdawg, I did check the updates folder and there weren't a whole lot of them since I had only installed the program in June. It seemed to be updating fine as per the automatic settings and then Nov. 14 just got stuck. It's weird because it just kept trying to download an update but the date in the Virus defs stays the same at Nov 14. After downloading the manual update, it would then say the virus defs are up to date and none to retrieve but Nov 14 still sitting there.
I'm thinking I'll just uninstall/reinstall. What is annoying about it is that the user was seeing they are getting an update and thought everything was working just fine. (They didn't notice the Nov 14th date wasn't changing)
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. -- It takes a disaster to make a woman out of a female Gladiator Security Forum |

| reply to CalamityJane I don't have an answer to your original question, but I do have a suggestion. Since the PC is 75 miles away, perhaps you might consider using a remote access/control program to save you driving over in the future. Since the PC is running Windows Me, look at using NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (RDS) or UltraVNC, which now has an encryption plug-in. Sitting at home and fixing the remote PC sure would beat driving 150 miles round trip...;)

It sounds like he was getting the program updates okay (and is up to date) but not the current database, probably do to a corrupt version.avg file. The program is still using avg6.avi which is the DB from Nov 13, 2003. Moving the files I mentioned above should get everything back into sync with the latest DB. -- Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me |

Probably not a bad idea...will that work if I have Win98? (NetMeeting)
It would be ideal to have something like that as I know I have programs installed on there that may need attention beyond their skill level, which is most everything that isn't automatically updated. You all have these types of relatives don't you? -- It takes a disaster to make a woman out of a female Gladiator Security Forum |

Yes it will...
You should only need to forward TCP Port 1503 through any firewalls to make this work when calling direct IP to IP... For additional information you can look at the Resource Kit...

Re: Can't update AVG free ... What server are you trying to d/l from? If you only have the one option from free.grisoft.cz try this.
Navigate to your AVG install directory and rename your existing url.ini file to url.iniold.
Copy the following and paste into notepad and save it as url.ini. Put this new file into your AVG install directory. You'll now have 3 options to select from with www.grisoft.com being the default.
[SERVER_NAME] 1=free.grisoft.cz 2=ftp.grisoft.com 3=www.grisoft.com
[SERVER_URL] 1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe 2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/ 3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/ Actual URL=3

I have also been using AVG Free. Recently, when servers were busy and I also couldn't get an update, so I tried looking for other software. I found a site that ranked AV programs and was dismayed by AVG's showing.
Now, I'm not sure which free software to use. |

It took some time to find those links, but here they are:
1) The link showing comparisons of AV products

2) The disappointing link I had found about AVG

| reply to CalamityJane Well this topic if fairly old but in reply to Cylon the number of download locations will remain at 1 until you restart the pc or reload AVG Control Center either way. Also be sure that this part "Actual URL=3" equals 3 and not 1 if there is a 1 in there by mistake then you will still have 1 download location. |

join:2004-03-06 Studio City, CA | I don't see why you would need 3 download locations. Once you choose an area to download from,( US, overseas,) the info should be the same, why have 3 different locations for updates> can't it be streamed from one site? |
