@pacbell.n | Etherics in Cupertino
Hi,
I have requested a survey from etherics, to verify the line-of-sight for a possible installation. What do you guys think about the service ?

| Has anybody done any latency tests? I want to know how much latency to expect and how much it varies.
Also, have any users noticed any connectivity issues? Slow times? Or any other quirks. I'm definitely going to get the service as soon as they have a system that will work through trees.
Thanks, Traveller |

| What type of latency stats are you looking for ?
I've been keeping a record of latency and ping times since I've had the service. I'd say that it's been 99% good and 1% bad. However, that's much better service than any other ISP I've been with. -- Blue Skies ! |

1 edit | Here is a couple of charts that show latency. In the first chart, the average ping times for today. That is pinging from a friend's work to our server on Etheric's network at my house. But he is running that over a slow T1 line. In the second graph, you can see from the yearly chart switching from Comcast to Etheric. My average from our server to cisco.com is also posted in the third picture. Those are more realistic pings for the last 24 hours or so. -- Blue Skies ! |

OH.. so thats where all my bandwidth is going huh.
I cant say the same anymore about Etheric. My service completely blows. Latency is through the roof. Might as well be on AOL. My last speed test was...
2004-02-18 11:14:53 EST: 250 / 1669 Your download speed : 250881 bps, or 250 kbps. A 30.6 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 1669449 bps, or 1669 kbps.
Im basically pinging like 300+ all day. Ive sent over 50 e-mails about this problem. Nothing gets fixed.
Apparently David is getting the "Premium" service. I haven't seen speeds like that since the first day it was installed. Im pretty much | | ----- this close to cabcelling the service. He got major work to do. I can barley use this connection. Web pages take 40 seconds to load, upload and download speeds change by the minute. If your looking for dependable, consistent, solid service ... i would look elsewhere. The service does look pretty from the website, but don't let the pretty colors and text fool you. There lack of bandwidth , and bandwidth favoritism is killing this network faster then you can say "Etheric.net" |

1 edit | Who's David? are you referring to me? If it, I don't have the premium service - just the residential gold plan.
Sorry to see you go man. I know that there have been times where things have not been great, but for the most part, it still get's 4/5 stars for overall quality. I know the past couple days they have been having a couple router problems, and that did include some downtime, but they resolved the situation fairly quickly.
Bandwidth favoritism? Hmmm... I wouldn't know anything about that. True, the bandwidth does fluctuate, but I haven't seen it go under my CIR of 1.5/1.5 since I've had the service. Anything over that is bonus, is the way I look at it. True getting 8/8Mb or 5/5Mb all day every day would be nice, but it's not realistic. Not with wireless technology anyways. Good luck with your future ISP "comshaft" if you choose to go back to them. I think I'd rather choose a little hit in performance from time to time rather than bandwidth limitations and unable to run servers.
Have they done a truck roll out to your site to check your alignment ? Call up Alex or Patrick and have them run an RSSI test on your radio and check the results. I was set up with -70 rssi, and I'm still seeing -72 as the average (lower numnbers are better.) -- Blue Skies ! |

3 edits | reply to Jay-Cupertino Truck roll? heh .. are you kidding me? I cant even get him to call me or answer a few simple questions i have.
I told Alex, if there is something wrong with my equipment, then lets get someone out here to fix it. Ive done numerous test on my LAN, and found nothing out of the ordinary. Ive sent him several latency graphs, speed test, mrtg reports, you name it. He hasn't called me once. He has sent vague e-mails about the problem, but has never suggested sending a tech out to solve the problem or take a look. Its something internal. Ive seen the line stable as can be a few times, but it never lasts. On top of that .. they have the nerve to tell me that im using 2Mb of sustained bandwidth all day everyday, when i run my own mrtg graphs for 2 computers that use Etheric and my monitors have never reported anything over 1.2mb form them at any given time. I cant even get 2mb of upload or download unless its freakin 3am. Plus, i run game servers and when my servers lagging out no one wants to play in it, which is all the time.. so they leave. Ive never been able to pull more then 700-900kbps without spiking out to 1000+. For them to tell me im using 2mb of sustained bandwidth is ridiculous. It looks they are sharing my monitor with another user. One night i was pulling only 400kbps, and his monitor for me was showing that i was using over 3mb of upload. Its almost like someone has tapped into my line, and causing all these problems for me.
As far as my Comcast service goes. I already have Comcast, and it it works great. I never seen these kind of performance issues. The only think that blows about Comcast is the upload speed. Otherwise. im getting 3500 on my downloads 24/7 and im happy with that. I rarely see 3500 from Etheric. Rarely. I rarely see my 1.5 24/7 for that matter. As far as the server go.. Ive ran servers on my Comcast for years now (used to be @ home & Art), nothing has changed. if your not a heavy user of the line you have nothing to worry about. I haven't received a letter about my web, ftp, game servers from any of the cable company's in the bay area in the 7 years Ive been using cable modem.
I could give a rats ass about 5/5 all day everyday. Im not here to cap out my line 24/7. The problem is i fall below 1.5 all day long causing tremendous spikes on my line. If it worked properly i wouldn't be bitching, but i guess he doesn't take me seriously or care about my business or he would have someone over here to fix this problem.
Ive been dealing with his kind of performance for 2 months straight. Those ping spikes aren't normal dude. A nice running service will show no spikes of any kind. Ive had speakeasy, and the latency was a solid 30ms all day everyday to any local server.
You may be into downloading 24/7 on your ftp client or server, but im into low latency and steady performance. And theres nothing steady about my service or yours. I can look at your graphs above, and see the instability. Those spikes should be happening at all. Thats either CPU load, bad routing, or lack of bandwidth. Might even be some kind of network management software jacking everything up. who knows. I can assure you its one of those though. |

Ok.. heres your etheric versus comcast latency test. I used the same cable mdoem to ping each server at the same time. Heres my results. |
