Re: [wired] BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7

Opps, sorry, my previous post is a 'new guy' error. The answer is in »[DW6000] Port scan: all TCP ports open?

The open ports have nothing to do with the router, it is a direcway NOC issue.

Sorry about the bad post.

I got here by searching grc, I was getting most ports open in the grc.com test. So I installed 1.45.7 and still get the same result. I do have one port (port number > 1024)forwarded, to allow a custom application to accept connections.

My internet connection is DirecWay DW6000 (with fixed IP)

What now?

The problem appears to be somewhat random and some people even saw that in 1.44.11t. Seems like in 1.45.3 and beyond, this problem got worst.

Yeah. I was aware of that already, because with 1.44.11t, I couldn't enable UPnP and have ActiveX set to deny at the same time. As you said, it seems to be worse since 1.45.3

Kabuto, sorry about that. Many of us were already aware of this strange behavior. The problem appears to be somewhat random and some people even saw that in 1.44.11t. Seems like in 1.45.3 and beyond, this problem got worst.

As everyone else, the workaround is to allow all web filters for now until Linksys fixes that one up.

Kabuto, was your Advanced Firewall Protection set to Enable with that proxy web filter on deny? Those two settings, SPI enabled and any web filter on deny, are known to cause disconnection/reboot problems in 1.45.7. Firmwares 1.44.8 through 1.44.11t didn't seem to be as sensitive to these settings and fewer reboot problems were reported.

Kabuto, you asked about the secret pages and here they are:
»192.168.1.1/reload.htm (does nothing but reloading)
»192.168.1.1/auto_nego.htm ( wan port speed )
»192.168.1.1/BackupnRestoreCfg.htm (backup and restore custom config data)
»192.168.1.1/Filters.htm (older filterpage)
»192.168.1.1/Log4Manage.htm (to enable debug log ea.)
»192.168.1.1/routerdmz.htm (older dmz page)
»192.168.1.1/MacFilterTable.htm (mac address filter page)

They work in every firmware version as far as I can tell and some are very useful, especially the backupnrestorecfg page.

edit: this one I just got from d_l: »192.168.1.1/SysInfo.htm (some general info)
thanks d_l

I made many tests and I finally hit the spot. The problem was not with my MTU value, since I'm now operating at 1500 without any problem. The problem was the "Proxy" setting in the web filter that was set to deny. Strangely enough, this didn't cause any problem when I was on 1.44.11t. However, if someone is interested in making a test, try downloading a file from outside on your FTP when the web filters in your router are set as follow:

-Proxy : Deny
-Java : Allow
-ActiveX : Allow
-Cookies : Allow

Please note that I made all my tests from a PC that was also behind a firewall. My FTP server is IIS, on standard port 21.

For that, you need to find out what MTU value is suitable for you...

I've tried that test in the command prompt and according to that, I should be alright with 1500.

I'm on cable modem and I was alright prior to my upgrade from 1.44.11t. Well, I'll just have to try decreasing the MTU value and see what it does. Thanks again for your help!

Kabuto, I think Jan referred about hardcoding the MTU to your PC directly. For that, you need to find out what MTU value is suitable for you. Use the links below to show you how to find the MTU value and how to apply it to the Windows OS.

»Tweaking FAQ »Max MTU: How do I find mine?
»Tweaking FAQ »DRTCP: How do I use it and what are all these settings?

I had to do that on my two xDSL sites 'cause I was having some trouble myself.

Forget my last reply. I didn't even remember that the MTU settings were in the Firewall tab of the regular interface. If someone could help me with that, I appreciate. Here are my MTU settings:

-Auto

The manual size indicates a value of 1500, but I'm set to Auto.

I think it isn't V1.45.7 Maybe MTU settings?

Thanks. I'd check that out, but I don't remember the URL to access the MTU settings page. Could someone give it to me, as well as any other useful "secret" pages URLs? Thanks in advance!

"I'm already at 1.45.7. I cannot download more than a few hundred Kb before the connection hangs."

I'm at V1.45.7, have been for weeks, and I must tell you, I had to download a 300 MB file over the weekend.... and while it downloaded, I fired up an old W98 machine and did a Windows Update on another machine simultaneously... Didn't encounter a problem on either machine...

I think it isn't V1.45.7 Maybe MTU settings?

Have you tried updating the drivers to your NIC? What about the duplex settings?

I'm on full duplex mode and I have the most recent driver for my network card, if that's what you mean by NIC. I know that it used to work on 1.44.11t, but it doesn't anymore...

I'm only having disconnect problems when I'm uploading. Downloading is working for me with whatever firmware I'm using. Have you tried updating the drivers to your NIC? What about the duplex settings?

Kabuto, I would still try 1.45.7 before downgrading. I mean it's true that the official changes in 1.45.7 are related to SNMP, VPN and NTP. However, as usual, Linksys have been inserting a couple of other small bug fixes in it. Perhaps 1.45.7 will solve your problem. I would give it a shot for sure.

I'm already at 1.45.7. I cannot download more than a few hundred Kb before the connection hangs. I didn't change anything in terms of port forwarding, or any other setting in fact, aside from disabling DHCP, since I only have one computer connected to the router and firmware 1.44.11t had a bug with that setting.

Try flashing to 1.44.13, select auto for MTU and set a value of 0. Now try FTP. Any disconnect/hang-ups? I too have a similar problem. I was able to FTP without disconnect/hang-ups with those settings.

Is there a particular reason why I should go back to 1.44.13 to perform that operation? I thought that this problem was fixed since 1.45.3, but apparently not. If your suggestion doesn't work, I guess I'll have to get back to 1.44.11t. Unless someone has another suggestion...

I wasn't able to test uploads, but a couple days ago I had to download a nearly 300 Mb file.... Fine.

But if someone has space that would support a large upload... I could easily try a large upload file...

Flogator,

Do you know if this firmware solves the FTP hang-ups that sometimes occur during transfers, shortly after the beginning? I don't know about the others, but that's what I've experienced with 1.45.3. I wasn't worried much about SNMP, since I'm not a network guru, but FTP is important to me...
