[wired] BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7

sx41_v1.45.7···code.zip 438,175 bytes
BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7
With recent issues with the time synchronization in the BEFSX41, Linksys provided a new BETA firmware. Using BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7, the router will successfully synchronize its time against the following NTP servers:

192.43.244.18 time.nist.gov (Primary/ACTS in Colorado)
203.69.197.150 (Secondary server pointing somewhere in Chunghwa Telecom network in Taipei Taiwan)
202.39.157.151 time.chttl.com.tw

Keep in mind this is beta material therefore, you use this at your own risks. I received the ok to post this firmware on this site because it solves problems for few users. Linksys will not release this firmware version thereof will not provide technical support for it.

This firmware almost obsolete the need for a hacked version. Linksys is also working on another firmware to allow users to configure their own favorite NTP time servers. That's coming in a few weeks if not months.

Having said all that, for the users testing this firmware, please report all of your findings to this thread.

As previously mentioned, this firmware can be forced to reboot by running a speedtest with Advanced Firewall Protection on Enable and Web Filter: ActiveX on Deny. This is the previously known bug that was reintroduced with 1.45.3 (or maybe the sensitivity to reboots was increased).

For me, the reboots aren't consistently reproducible like they were in pre-1.44.8 firmwares. Judging by the mixed reactions people have had with reboots using firmware 1.44.8 through 1.45.3, I think that some units may be more sensitive than others to the problem. Perhaps this is a timing issue in the CPU or other circuitry and the firmware instructions don't have enough margin of error for certain sequences to be completed.

I have two questions for anyone that tries the new firmware. First, can someone test their router against »grc.com to find out if all of the disallowed ports come up as stealth or a mix of that and closed. Second, how about a change to allow rules to be configured both inbound and outbound again? Thank you for your replies.

To ease the understanding of what BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7 is and what it isn't read the following.

BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7 is based on 1.45.3 with the following addition:
- SNMP is working
- VPN when remote gateway set to Any is working
- router can synchronize its time to working NTP servers

Sorry to say but this firmware does not change anything about the way the filters are working (or at best very little).

Also note, other than the filters, firmware 1.45.7 is the best firmware I ever ran on my BEFSX41s. Yes all ports are stealth (unless of course you've opened them up in the forwarding table) and the router doesn't reply with SYN/RST packet when being attacked by the GRC all service port test.

All of the first 1056 ports can be stealthed except for that one (113?) that is never stealthed.

As far as I can tell the Filter page is for Inbound only. It isn't like the Filter page on 1.44.8 and earlier.

d_l, thank you for the clarification on port 113. Indeed by default port 113 is not stealth but that's how it has been since 1.44.8 I think. In any case, you can manually stealth it by adding an entry in your port forwarding table that forward port 113 to an non-existing IP address (i.e. 192.168.1.254). This wastes an entry in the port forwarding table but gives you the benefit of having port 113 stealthed .

Web pages (including the router's page) seem to load faster now.

The only thing that differentiates this and 1.45.6 is the fact that NTP is working, am I correct?

frangus, I wouldn't say it is the only thing different. However, I must agree it is the major difference between 1.45.7 and 1.45.6_Beta. There were a couple of betas in between 1.45.3 and 1.45.7. One good thing of having BEFSX41 beta firmware 1.45.7 is to obsolete the needs of the interim betas.

I have said it and say it again, filters aside, this firmware is the best one I ever run on my BEFSX41s and I now have four of those on different sites.

I've been using it for nearly 2 weeks, and I'm happy with it too.. I have had one reset, but I'm running filters. Same filters with earlier versions reset far more often.

Just bought one today and found a problem, When I fist connected it it had old firmware 1.44.3, I tried it and it worked for Multiple PPTP connections, Then I went to linksys download and upgraded to 1.45.3 and the PPTP for multiple connections does not work, after the first connection is logged on any one else trying to log on gets error 650 dial up networking,Then I down gradded the firmware to 1.44 and it works again. I also tried a befvp41 ver 2, For one connection it is stable but it will not do 2 or more(Microsoft vpn port 1723 connections),I also noticed my bersr41 ver2 with new firmware will not foward port 1723.
I have been using linksys for years and have never seen such a fiasco with the PPTP pass through.

I know from the 1.45.3 thread that later firmware has introduced bugs about PPTP passthrough. Have you tried with firmware 1.45.7 to see if the same problem persists?

Flogator,

Do you know if this firmware solves the FTP hang-ups that sometimes occur during transfers, shortly after the beginning? I don't know about the others, but that's what I've experienced with 1.45.3. I wasn't worried much about SNMP, since I'm not a network guru, but FTP is important to me...

Try flashing to 1.44.13, select auto for MTU and set a value of 0. Now try FTP. Any disconnect/hang-ups? I too have a similar problem. I was able to FTP without disconnect/hang-ups with those settings.

That firmware fixed VPN connectivity as well. Firmware 1.45.3 VPN didn't work at all for me. I had to upgrade both routers to 1.45.7 to get the tunnel back up.

I wasn't able to test uploads, but a couple days ago I had to download a nearly 300 Mb file.... Fine.

But if someone has space that would support a large upload... I could easily try a large upload file...

I was unable to connect to the Turbo Tax upgrade using 1.45.3. I flashed 1.45.7 and reset MTU and now I can connect. 1.45.7 works whereas 1.45.3 did not.

Here is what I don't understand. I've worked in software quality control before. These on again off again issues between versions are like Linksys is losing control of the master code - like four or five versions of code are floating around their office. I've seen that where one or two programmers use local copies of the code instead of the master. If anyone here works for Linksys - please check to be sure multiple versions of the code aren't floating around the office. It happens easily. I've got a programmer at work who makes changes and then forgets to update the master - then he makes a correction from the master for another issue and it doesn't have the other changes in it so it's three steps forward and one back.

This firmware has fixed a lot of bugs. Now if Linksys would stay on top of the issues rather than have someone hack the firmware for us, it would be a good thing.

As someone earlier mention, everything is now faster then before. No problems so far

Is there a particular reason why I should go back to 1.44.13 to perform that operation? I thought that this problem was fixed since 1.45.3, but apparently not. If your suggestion doesn't work, I guess I'll have to get back to 1.44.11t. Unless someone has another suggestion...
