| Now it is YOUR turn
What you will see in my next post will within minutes appear in all of the other Distributed Computing Team forums. Put your Starfire pride on your chest and go find a Buddy, NOW! If you have two machines, find two Buddies, if three then three... you know the rest of the numbers I am sure. Do not spam the other forums please. Keep your posts that you are looking for a buddy in the original thread only, please!
Know and commit yourself to this though. For each day that your buddy crunches SETI for Team Starfire you will return that day to their project commencing the day after SETI@home Phase I ends, no exceptions. Well, maybe two days if you need assistance in setting up the project.
I will start a "Buddy Thread" and ask that you post in it who your Buddy is and what team they will be coming from. It is entirely up to you and your buddy to keep track of the days. Stay in touch with them, please.
5 in 4 IS Doable!! Do you want it? Are you willing to work and sweat for it? If so then maintain the Starfire integrity, keep your words and actions above board and let's go get it! We must take it ourselves, nobody is going to hand it to us.

| Your assistance would be appreciated.
Greetings teammates in the name of all distributed computing. Like the sands of time pass through the hourglass, leaving less and less until depletion, so too do the days of the first phase of the SETI@home project. SETI@home was the prototype project that opened the doors and proved that distributed computing would actually work, and work very very well.
SETI@home began a new and wonderful era in the world of research. I personally doubt that the founders of the project ever imagined that they would achieve the number of participants that they have over the past few years. SETI@home was the "Big Bang", the discovery of the first cell, protein and the beginning of the very first road. Since its inception the journey down that road has led to many crossroads. Turning at those crossroads led to other projects involving biomedical research. Still others have led to technological discoveries, helped feed the poor, raised the awareness and helped the less fortunate to afford medical exams, helped save many square miles of our planet from devastation, is now beginning to map the beginnings of various species found on our planet, is also now working on refining weather predictions. The list is endless.
However, as endless as the list may be, nothing can stand in the way of progress, not even the foundation of all distributed computing. A few short years ago, little did Kinguni and the small group of others who formed the first distributed computing team here at BBR, then DSLR, know that it would lead to the formation of so many other teams, all working for the betterment of mankind. Little did they know that their small team would grow to nearly 3,000 members. Little did they know that they would amass in excess of 7 MILLION completed work units. Little did they know that they and all of the forthcoming offspring teams would all achieve such high levels of standing in the world rankings of their various projects. Yet all of this has in fact come to fruition.
Having been around here for quite some time myself, I know that many of you who are now members of Teams Helix, Ecology, Discovery, Endeavor, RC5-72, Life Mapper got your start towards the "DC Addiction" by crunching SETI work units. I know that because like you I too have been involved at one time or another in every project we participate in here. To those of you who did in fact "cut your teeth" on SETI and also to those of you who have never once run the program looking for that "little green man" I openly ask for you to consider returning home, or as the case may be visiting, to assist Team Starfire in achieving just one more goal before the current phase ends. That goal is to rise at least one more step, and if it be so perhaps even two steps, in the world rankings of SETI@home.
Team Starfire is currently ranked seventh in the world. Team AnandTech, whom we have developed a great rivalry and some truly fantastic friendships with over the past couple years, currently resides in sixth place. Our rivalry has taken many turns over the past few years. A few times we led them in the standings. They are a formidable team and have some truly energetic members who achieve unbelievable results when they put out their call for assistance to keep us behind them in the standings. Now I, as Ambassador at Large of Team Starfire, am putting out the call to you for your assistance.
I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we can achieve this goal before the end of the current phase. I also know that to achieve that goal your help is needed. Though we have separate identities and goals, we here at BroadBandReports are one massive Distributed Computing Team, all with our own chosen specialties. As I said before in the past, many of us have had our computers working side by side on all the various teams.
Now how might I enlist your assistance without affecting your chosen project? Well, back some time ago I proposed something in a similar instance that worked out quite well. That was the "Buddy System". What I propose is that for each day that you have a machine working towards the Starfire goal, a member of Team Starfire will return that day of time with one of their machines at the close of the current SETI project phase. I emphasize the word day because of the vast difference in time to complete work units within the various projects. Given various computer power a SETI unit can be completed in a couple hours, whereas some Folding units can take several days and I feel that this would be the most equitable manner to handle it. You give Team Starfire a day of computing power or 2 or 3 or 30 or whatever number and your team will receive that same number of days in return at the termination of the current phase. Yes your team's production will drop for some time but when the returns are made it will increase above its normal output.
Your brothers and sisters of BBR Distributed Computing Team Starfire need your assistance, be it for a day, a week, a month or however long you wish to help. No, it is very unlikely that any results from the SETI project will cure cancer or any other diseases, child specific or adult, but SETI@home did open the doors such that all the other projects could begin their searches for the cures. You may find that "little green man" and your "SETI Buddy" just may find the missing link that leads to finding a cure or solution.
Hopefully you are still reading and I know this was long but thank you in advance for at least giving this some consideration. One last thing to keep in mind is that with the closing of this phase of SETI@home, I know that some Team Starfire members have already said they would be moving on to different projects. What better way to open the doors of your team than to have your "SETI Buddy" working right beside you? |

I know we're doing this on a day for day basis, and I know I am probably stating the obvious, but as the wu's for some projects take longer than others, please be considerate and finish the work out for those of us lending a hand to the common cause. =) -- There is no pain greater than love. |

Will the buddies be crunching under OUR accounts, or THEIR own personal accounts? (and vice-versa when we switch back over to repay TD crunch time)

When the announcement is made, it appears there will be a 3-4 week wind down period before S@H1 results will no longer be accepted. |

| That was from 5:30 central yesterday to 5:30 Central this morning. If it's a new account, and you joined BroadbandReports.com Team Starfire, in that time period, you should be on the list. We can check with SetiTeam to see if you are on the database, how many workunits are done in the account, so we know where to look on the list of members?

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but are you crunching under one account or two. Have the Desktop and Laptop both got 21 odd or is that combined. If it is you can ask Berkley to merge your two accounts.
If I'm wrong ignore this post theres nowt to see here. -- Coz |
