[W98] USB Mouse rec. as "Unknown usb device"

I have a microsoft mouse and a PCI to USB (Opti) adapter. The adapter installs fine, but it recognizes the mouse as an unknow usb device. I have tried DL'ing the Microsoft fix for it to no avail. I have uninstalled it, reinstalled it, several times, and it still says code 10 "unknow usb device". Why oh why does it not recognize the mouse?

pci to usb? Do you mean ps2 to usb? The fact is most mice cannot have their connection converted unless it was already supported by the device itself.

Did Windows 98 drivers come with the mouse? If so, have you installed them?

Why do you want to use a USB mouse with 98? Your computer should have a PS2 port and most USB mouse devices have a USB to PS2 adapter. If you need to make it work try turning on/off USB legacy support in your BIOS.

What the heck type of MB doesn't have PS2 or serial ports???

Anyway, If you DLed Intellipoint 5 mouse drivers they are the worst you need 4.1 or 4.12.

Here's a link for 4.12

Ok, what do you have? Is it a new system that you are trying to dual boot to 98? The Dell laptop that I am using doesn’t have PS2 or serial ports, but its bios makes the mouse look like a PS2 to DOS mouse drivers. So if it is a new motherboard, it is most likely a BIOS setup/BIOS problem.

This is an old system. It is a k62-300 w/ 128MB ram. Yes, the mobo is a POS, and yes the person who "owns" it doesn;t want to spend any amt. of $$$ fixing it. This comp. was/is still soo fuked up lol.

It should have at least one header for a serial port. If it is that old, a current PCI card may not work. Has it ever worked with a mouse?

yes it has. It may have the header you speak of, for a serial port attachment, but I cannot find the attachment.

Does anything else work in the port? What does your device manager say about the USB ports? Are they enabled in the BIOS? Did you install the drivers first or the mouse first?
