| Upload beats Download?
Hello, I'm new to DSL and am already confused. My original activation date was 12/18 but was pushed back until 12/22. However, on 12/19 my line was activated and on 12/20 my account activated. Throughout this process I was told by several Tech people at VOL that I'm within the distance limit but they were "probably" waiting on a "slot to open." Once I was connected, I came here and tested the speed and it was 34/136. My service has been on and off since activation but when on, the upload has bet the download. By the way, I was finnally told today that the techs determined I was 21000 ft away and don't qualify (although I have been playing AAO all night without a problem). It just puzzles me that the upload is faster? | | gwion wild colonial boy Premium,ExMod 2001-08 join:2000-12-28 Pittsburgh, PA
| Have you tweaked your TCP-IP settings, at all? Probably a very good idea. We have a first rate tweaking forum, here, and some good tools to help you get things going...
At those distances, every bit could help, no doubt. You didn't mention whether you're running a firewall, but, if so, there are certain ICMP packets you must allow inbound (types 3 and 11) to maintain an efficient connection. Hmmm... good thought for a security FAQ, by Jove, -- but I digress, as usual...
Just a couple of off the hip thoughts... you should be getting substantially better than that, and I would normally have mentioned inside wiring, filters, and all, but your upload looks absolutely normal, and your DL is insane... off the scale. No, that's entirely abnormal, even at your distances. Either there's some tweaking and troubleshooting, in order, here, or you hae line problems... or you tested at precisely the moment something went down in the network... but 34 is a good speed for a 33.6 analog modem, not a DSL...
Welcome aboard, nice to meet you, and hope you get that speed up... you should be getting anywhere between 600 and 700 down, even a pretty good ways out from your CO... and DSL shouldn't fluctuate with system load, the way cable sometimes can... -- The willow bends unbroken when angry tempests blow,The stately oak is levelled and all its strength laid low...Oliver Wendell Holmes Even when you feel like your life is fading I know that you'll go on forever You're that good... | | Tc_Cap

| Semper, Thanks for the response. I have used the tweak tester on this site along with DRTCP. The only firewall I use is the built-in XP one. Since I posted this last night I have not lost the connection. I also adjusted my Local Area settings per the VOL help site (I had previously only adjusted the Broadband settings). Last night I was able to play Americas Army for several hours with no problem and this morning my download speeds have been around 100 with upload staying a constant 136. I was wondering if I should just wait untill 12/22, which was my adjusted Activation Date to see if that has an affect. It's funny because I didn't expect to get DSL and here I am sooo close only to have the VOL tech give me the number for billing to get a refund (due to distance). I'm not giving up though, the first 30 days are free and I will tweak, relace lines and whatever else it takes.

| Hey since you are an America's Army player:D:D;) , did you happen to notice your ping to the servers last night?
Ok lets get you started, getting this fixed.
First off you should really dump the XP firewall and get either Zone Alarm or Tiny Personal Firewall. Both have free versions and will provide much better protection.
Second anti Virus and Trojan scanner, the security forum has lots of good info here and links to Free versions.
Third run the tweak test here and post the results, along with your system specs of your machine
Lastly try to download a file of 10MB or higher and watch it and when its about 15% and 40% what does it show as the speed?

| reply to Tc_Cap Call up the repair office of your landline provider. Tell them you have been getting noice on the line and slow speeds when using your DIALUP 56k modem. Ask for the tech to call you before he starts the job.
When the tech comes out, calmly explain the situation. You are getting slow speeds on connecting with your dialup modem. Also, you have ordered DSL and want to make that more stable. Ask him if there are any bridge taps in the area. If there are, ask him to cut thim out if its ok with the EA in the area. | | jasonfffffff

| Also... BE REAL NICE TO THE TECH THAT COMES TO YOUR HOUSE...
These guys are the ones that know there stuff. Generally, they are really helpful with anything that they can do. There are somethings they cannot do by law or they get fined.
If they say that they can't do something, its generally the truth. Politely thank them. Most of these guys will bend over backwards for the customer. Lets keep them happy, or they might get jaded and act like the people on the other end of the phone...... | |
