Lots of new "Non Profit" companies

"...CPM Funding Inc., a California mortgage company, admits calling at least eight numbers on the registry...." I wonder if they are one of the ones I've received calls from recently that start of with something like
"Hi, this is Joe Schmoozer with FlyByNite Credit Inc, a non-profit organization. Please contact me immediately concerning your pre-approved loan for..."
I'm wondering how many new "non-profit" organizations are cropping up in light of the Do Not Call list? I find it hard to believe that ANY company offering to refinance my home, or consolodate my credit cards with a new loan, etc. etc. is "non-profit".

I'm getting a LOT of calls from two groups now:

Law enforcement fund raisers and 'research' organizations that call me to do surveys about home products and other such things.....The former I suppose is non-profit, but the latter generally are selling that info I have to assume?

Although I have yet to comb over it closely, the law enforcement "charities" that call me are non-tax deductible. So I'm wondering if an organization without that exemption meet the qualifications for "charitable" orgnizations permitted by the DNC list.

I admit I don;t (yet) know....

I signed up my home and cell numbers to the "Do not call" registry, but I find that I am still getting calls from telemarketers.

Wasn't there supposed to be some number that you were able to punch in (after the call) to submit a complaint and report a violation of that DnC list?

Actually most of the fire/police charities that make phone solicitations are scams. We got called by a fireman's family fund and when my wife asked where they were located, address etc. they wouldn't divulge anything. When she looked up the phone number for said charity and called it they said that they never to phone solicitations so the guy who had called us was just using their name to rip people off.

Speaking of Law Enforcement charities.
My parents were out of town last holidays and i stopped by their place to feed their animals while they were out and ended up answering a phone call from one of these orginizations. After the "long-winded intro speil" i told them i wasn't interesed. The caller started to refer to me by my fathers name, and i began to argue the fact that i wasn't my father. Needless to say i hung up before it got anywhere.

Mid January he got a collection notice from the Orginization. Seems he had given to the charity before and they had his bank accn't info on hand and went ahead and charged a "donation" to it and he contested it via the bank and so they sent a collection notice.
Also after contesting everything and ending the collections my parents started recieving threatening phone calls from someone at this orginization.
Long story short, calls to the orginization were fruitless, and my parents had to file a complaint with Bellsouth and have the offending numbers blocked.
Since they went thru all of that it has turned me off on most of these charity places. Their tactics, even if it was isolated to one employee, seem shady at best.

To file a complaint over the phone, call 1-888-382-1222 (for TTY, call 1-866-290-4236). Or go to »https://www.donotcall.gov/Complain/Compl···eck.aspx

The law enforcement fund raisers, and other supposed charities, may be cases where the telemarketing firm is taking a large cut of the "donation", perhaps as much as 50% - there are similar situations with door-to-door canvassers. This is probably one of their tactics to get new business, highly profitable arrangements with supposed non-profits. It may also be that some telemarketers, if not running and out-and-out scam, are doing the telemarketing for very dubious supposed charitable organizations and not asking any questions.

I hang up immediately as soon as they identify themselves or mispronounce my last name. Saves us all a lot of trouble.

Just makes me angry. A "Do Not Call" list should mean just that. It should mean I don't want ANY unsolicited calls and will not purchase/help/donate to ANY cause.

December 21st, @07:27PM

I use just my now much loved Inteliscreener. Most of the telemarketing calls I got were from the same 3 companies (MCI, Capital One and that pinko rag L.A. Times). No matter how many times I told them to drop dead and put me on their DNC lists they just ignored me. Now they're stored on my block list and are never heard from again. And any "out of area" calls get dropped too (private calls are already blocked by Verizon) Ain't technology grand?
