Anybody know what happened to the aerial photos that used to be available on Mapquest?
Anyone know of another source of free online aerial photos? In color, preferably. |

NTL... terraserver is a subscription service, unless you access it thru thos URL: »terraserver-usa.com/ which USGS was kind enough to write into Microsoft's contract.

Dear MapQuest visitor,
We removed the SMALL MAP and BIG MAP buttons and replaced those options with a larger default map graphic. This change was made based on requests from our user community.
Aerial or satellite photographs are not currently available on the MapQuest Web site at www.mapquest.com. We have forwarded your comments about the value of these images to your MapQuest user experience to the Web site producers.
GlobeXplorer, the company that provides and maintains the aerial images, sells complete image tiles of select locations for business use. You may wish to contact GlobeXplorer through their Web site at www.globexplorer.com.
Thank you for using MapQuest.com! Best regards, Not much reason to go there now... |

| reply to Wiacomm_CC If you go to Mapquest's landmarks page, you can zoom out to other locations to find your aerial photo. Not as handy as the old search but at least the images are still there.

| reply to Wiacomm_CC check out »www.subliminalnews.com/archives/000118.php I am still not sure why mapquest has stopped this option but I think this is interesting. Maybe with the other photo companies listed in the article you can find what you are looking for.

@optonline.net | It's a question of money - nothing is free - whether it's useful or not. The MApquest Aerials were fairly old anyway - at least 5-6 years old. |

| reply to Wiacomm_CC I've always sided with Mapquest when many others would say how "bad" they were. I once begged to differ, as their greatest asset was the fact you could blow up the map to a large size and view aerial shots. It was this very unique tool that made them stand out, a necessity that separated them from the others...although now they've done away with this, and even I have to admit their site is all but useless. To say Mapquest just "sucks" now is an understatement. I know I speak for many people when I say I'll never use them again. Sad, but true...They made their bed, and now they'll lay in it. |

| reply to Wiacomm_CC Mapquest DOES suck and is SO useless now!!!!!!****** It used to be a really decent one stop shopping site to map/big map/aerial/driving dirtection etc.
******What kind of nonsense is that reponse you got? What user would ever ASK for less functionality? Let alone enough users to actually force a change for the worse? I think we can ALL guess what agent is at work here. It is limiting what these measures are leaving us with. After all the time available to make any needed changes, this is happening NOW? At best it describes a state of complete unpreparedness and ineptitude. At worst, it is one of many to come aimed, disabling blows to access of information. This affects most the ability to use information to enhance one's life in a positive manner. |

@anl.gov | reply to iBLoStBoY The globexplorer site seems to be rejecting non-Gates' browsers. The message says, "optimized for Internet Explorer". Optimized enough that nobody else can use it. |

| reply to Wiacomm_CC I thought Mapquest did away with the aerial view because of the possible use by terrorist. The map quality was very good. Although, it was not always up to date it certainly did the job. I could make out the landscape and pool at my house! Maybe I am wrong and the real reason is more economic. ie the profitability. Some companies pay for that service which was available for free at your fingertips. As for me I miss it already. |
