AOL Plus vs. Verizon

I am already hooked up to dsl thru Verizon at about 9 times faster than my 56 k modem but aol states I can go up to 5000 times faster than my modem is this true? It would only cost me a few dollars more to switch from Verizon to aol I currently use the BYOA plan on AOL . I don't want to change my plan to the $21.95 plan if I am going to get the same speeds with the added cost of the $20.00. Thanks

Nope, you'll get the same speeds. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you got slower speeds through AOL. Since Verizon is your telephone company (telco), when you get DSL through AOL, you are really still getting the DSL through Verizon, since they own the phone lines. You just pay AOL to "rent" the lines from Verizon and give you access to the DSL. Just out of curiosity though, how much is your DSL through Verizon? I found that, in my area at least, AOL DSL is actually cheaper than Verizon (or any other DSL provider, for that matter), and if you're also paying the $10 BYOA, it seems like you might be able to save some money by just switching to AOL DSL.

In order to get adsl thru aol I would have to change my billing plan to the $21.95 or whatever it is so I will stick with Verizon

AOL uses verizon so you would be lucky if you got the same speed.

Indeed. AOL adds about 3-5% to the overhead of my connection.

AOL DSL PLUS is a nightmare. I have used AOL as my ISP for years, and I have been extremely happy with them. Around May 1, 2001. I submitted my order to AOL to upgrade to AOL PLUS DSL, the Three Headed Internet Monster. I received an E-Mail from AOL on May 16, 2001, informing me that my DSL Service was ready to go. I hooked up the modem, downloaded all the necessary software, but I couldn't connect to AOL using the DSL modem. I called AOL. They checked the installation of their software, and then suggested that I call Actiontec, the company that makes the modem. I called ActionTec. They checked the installation of their drivers, and when that was found to be okay, they suggested that I call my local phone company, Verizon. I called Verizon. Verizon told me that my home was not set up for DSL, and that they had received no request for this to be done. They suggested that I contact AOL. I called AOL. AOL stated that they had received notice from Verizon stating that my DSL Service had been activated. Furthermore, AOL stated that they had software that could determine if my DSL Service had been activated by Verizon. AOL stated that according to their software, my home was receiving a DSL signal. I told AOL that my ActionTec Modem only had one light lit, indicating that it was receiving no DSL Signal. AOL asked me to leave my PC on for 36 hours, so that they could ping the modem, and run a diagnostic. At the end of three days I called AOL. They said their diagnostic test revealed that my modem was not running on the most current driver software. We checked and found that my modem did have the most current driver software. AOL scheduled a Verizon Tech to visit my home on 05-26-2001. Dave the Verizon Tech came to my home and found (surprise, surprise) that my home was receiving no DSL signal. He called AOL. AOL asked me to leave my PC on for 36 hours so that they could run a diagnostic....
I believe that AOL, Verizon, and ActionTec will never get it together. I still have no DSL Service. This whole situation has been unbelievable.

Geez I like it where I am, I am just curious how AOL can state that the connect speed can be 5000 % faster than a 56 K modem

  Let's do the math. AOL runs about what, 9000bps? 9000 * .9 = 8100bps (10% TCP overhead loss).

8100 / 8 - 1012.5bps or 1.01kbps
1.01 * 5000 = 5050kbps

Let's add more line overhead, this is Verizon you know:
5050kbps * .9 = 4545kbps.
Let's add in the "holy crap my gateway is 500 miles away in Virginia" factor, add some packet loss. (Verizon, remember?) 4545kbps * .4 = 1818kbps

Verizon caps your line, 640kbps for you!
Hmm, more line overhead loss 20% more:
640 * .8 = 512kbps.
Winpoet is slow and a complete was of programming time, you lose 5% more.
512kbps * .95 = 486.4k actual bandwidth which equates to at best 60.8k download speed.

Technically, yes your line is 5000 times faster than an AOL dial-up. In reality, Verizon or AOL aren't the best choices for ISPs / ISP combos.
