| E-mail campaign to mchsi Re: speed increases
I was thinking maybe we should start an e-mail campaign asking Mediacom to increase their speeds like others are doing. It's worth a try isn't it????
I was wondering if someone can get the e-mail addresses and the snail mail address we need.
If by chance one is started..... Please be sure not to be rude or disrespectful.
Thanks folks. |

This is what happens when they have a monopoly in the majority of their markets, they don't care as someone would in an open market.
Granted, Mediacom is 500 fold better than AT&T or TCI ever were in our area, however, they still suck a huge goat nipple. -- "The most overlooked advantage of owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against whacking them around a bit." |

Hey, I happen to be into goat nipples (although huge ones are hard to find here )
I would take part in the email campaign for sure. It never hurts to pray for something you know you wont get, all it costed was air |

| reply to plk This may be one reason why this might help us. After seeing this kind of data, Mediacom might skip raising caps and just offer lower speeds at a lower price. I want to make sure they know we are here and want the speed.

I just know Marigolds is going to say something like this isn't going to work, and maybe even that some of the Mediacom execs who see this may actually laugh. There's just not enough people here to spark anything with Mediacom.
Other than that, I pretty much agree with Zshen, with the addition that despite my impressions of Mediacom due to many past problems, some of the Mediacom folks here are good guys.

but just to point out that a speed increase is not a matter of flipping some sort of an imaginary speed switch or changing the signs along the highway to read 65 instead of 55. Some infrastructure would surely have to be upgraded before you can fit 100 people going at a higher speed vs the 60 that are going at a medium speed now. -- Stupidity, like hydrogen, is one of the basic building blocks of the Universe. Or, maybe he was going to announce tomorrow that Mediacom suddenly decided to offer 3.0/256 service for the same price.
Probably not, but maybe. |

Just tell me where to send it. I'd be tickled with 1500/256 at the same price or at least available at a resonable slightly higher rate. |

| reply to plk Or maybe I was going to point out that you should target your organization at the offices who regulate the cable tv franchises which cover your respective areas and encourage them to put the same sort of pressure on Mediacom. When you get those offices behind you, you multiple the effect of the number of people you already have since they can effectively speak for many people who never would speak up. -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://whip.isca.uiowa.edu Member: American Association of Geographers, American Geophysical Union, American Water Resources Association |

It would be nice to see better download/upload speeds but I'm not complaining considering the alternative which is DSL through MSN/Quest which sucked for speeds considering I was paying them about the same price and their modem sucked also. I'm getting 2,048/244.5 on my last speed test with Medicom internet. I downloaded the Full version of the new America's Army PC game online two days ago which is a 700MB file and completed the download in about an hour downloading at about 150-180kb/s. When I was using ADSL with MSN/Quest my download speeds were about 60-70kbs/s and my disconnects were more frequent, plus I had to use that stupid MSN8 software which made me use full cookies and accept ignorant and annoying popup ads. I'd be more then happy to sign a protest form if others are also willing to back it up by telling Mediacom in a protest letter. For example the following: " Dear Mediacom Internet: If significant speeds can't be increased by at least 10% by such a date then the following signed petitions will discontinue their service with Mediacom internet service." Make it plain and simple. My question to others is what capacity of downloading are they actually able to provide. And how different are my speeds living in Des Moines different from Goya Asma in Marion, wildwest in Fairfield, or Die For Metal, Live For Death in Iowa City. |

It's because you are testing with bandwidth place, which is highly inaccurate. (P.S. My handle is marigolds, "Die For Metal, Live For Death" is the tagline ) I can test at over 2 megabit down on that site as well, but I am actually capped at 1.5 megabit. Try chi.speakeasy.net for a more accurate test (where I test at 1440-1445/120-125 very consistently). -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://whip.isca.uiowa.edu Member: American Association of Geographers, American Geophysical Union, American Water Resources Association |

My download speeds are usually about the same as Marigolds except sometimes my uploads are only around 89 at peak times. (speed test to chi.speakeasy.net) |

Good point. However, evidently the infrastructure is there. They offer a business plan with I belive 3000/256...They have the technology, it's just a matter of when they're going to share it with the rest of the world. -- 1 system...HSI...DIRECTV w/CC basic |

Sorry I wasn't clear enough with that reply...
They might (and probably do) have the infrastructure to supply a speed of 3000/256 (and possibly even higher) it's just a matter of how many people can they provide it to.
The problem that I pointed out before is that when they engineer(ed) their network they expected to provide only a small percentage of their subscriber base with those speeds. So say out of every 1000 users on the network they might have 10 business customers which is only 1%. Suddenly you provide those speeds to 1000 users (100%) and you will have problems with your infrastructure even though you can support 1-10% of the subscribers going at a higher rate.
I'll try a baseball analogy.
Say you have a 20 million dollar budget to sign up players. If you want to have a team of super-stars you can only sign up maybe 10 people (not by todays standards but follow along ) which means you pay everyone 2 million dollars.
I've never heard of baseball teams with 10 people on them so obviously they will need more people and they have to budget better. So, they will give some players 500,000$ instead of 2million and now you can get 4 average players for every super-star you didn't sign up.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is how many people can you give these speeds to before the infrastructure is oversaturated and you need to expand? -- Stupidity, like hydrogen, is one of the basic building blocks of the Universe. I'm re-moo-ing!!! My Gallery * My Journal |

Yes I aggree. We deserve more speed. If mediacom is able to match any sat tv price and buy back the satilites. Then donate money to my community. They damn well better have enough money to provide me with more speed.

| reply to plk Well, I told Jon Kubrick last Monday that customers strongly want to see an increase in upload speed to 256. I said that from what I had heard, a download increase would be nice, but that an upload increase is particularly strongly demanded. Based on some of the actual infrastructure changes that have occured and the way Mediacom is talking more and more about additional services with HSI as one of the main services, they almost certainly are getting prepared for some sort of change. As with any upgrade, I will expect them not to give an expected date until the service is in place -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://whip.isca.uiowa.edu Member: American Association of Geographers, American Geophysical Union, American Water Resources Association |
