| Cable Modem Lease
I have been an Adelphia PowerLink customer for a year now and I have been leasing a modem for that period. I still have the Motorola Surfboard 4101 and I think it is time to get a new one. Does adelphia allow me to lease a new Moto or will they just make me keep the 4101? Is it worth getting my own? I've never had trouble with the 4101 and 3 bucks a month isn't bad. I'm just afraid that if my modem does die, I won't have the cash for a new one. I would like some comments about this. Especially about Adelphia leasing me a newer surfboard. -- If we're the only ones. It sure is a waste of space. |

| Are you having trouble with your SB4101? They do have issues, depending on the firmware it has. I don't think you should have trouble if you really want one. What is the worst that could happen, they tell you "no"? However, if you are interested in getting your own, then I would say that if you can push it, do it. Look at it this way, if you keep paying the $3 a month, then you have basically bought yourself a modem over time. But, like you said, if the modem would malfunction, it is your responsibility. -- Adam...Uh, someone broke the internet again! |

| reply to StrScape3000 I'd say if you would not have the cash for a new modem, you are probably pretty hard up for money. They have come down a lot in price since they were introduced and most of the time now, you can get them for $60 or less. I definitely think it is worth getting your own. As far as Adelphia getting you a new one, you'd have a better chance of buying your own, because they pretty much will not give you a new one unless there is some sort of problem. Other users have indicated upload problems with the version of modem you have and Adelphia did not provide most of them with a replacement, they bought their own. I bought my own SB 5100 as well, and it is well worth the money. |

1 edit | reply to StrScape3000 I am hard up for cash. I'm a college student who pays $500/mth in bills and lives off of $20/wk. Hmm. Credit Card. (Free Money) I am looking into a new SB. I've read that the sb4100/4101 was having trouble with the new speeds. I still only get around 120 upstream. I'm gonna look into the SB5xxx. Thanks. -- If we're the only ones. I forgot. I did get a free modem a few months back. Linksys v.2. Every 10 minutes it would freeze. I contacted Linksys and they told me it was probably from low signal strength. (-12 here) Adelphia came to increase my signal but they had no luck. Are the SB5xxx more forgiving about low signal strength? |

| I certainly understand the college student thing and hard up for cash. If you are being affected by the upload issue, then I would say it is Adelphia's obligation to fix that, hence they would have to give you the newer modem. When you are a college student, $60 could be the difference between eating or not. |

| reply to StrScape3000 Since money seems to be the major factor for you, Modem lease $3 if it ever dies you get a new one Modem Purchase ~$60 if it dies after warranty period you are out.
Months to payoff purchased modem at lease rate >> 20 -- Everything is relative and subjective. |
