[XP] Getting space back after reducing System Restore

Hi, was checking my machine for where space (have 40G HD on laptop) has been going using the shareware utility treeview (which I recommend) and noticed that system restore is taking a good chunk of it, close to 3G. Checked the setting and I have it set to the max (the default, 12%) I reduced it to be set to half (6%, could reduce it more but for now did half) but yet when I check again, the space taken has not changed. How do I go about reducing the size it is currently taking up or will it eventually since I have reduced the setting?

Thanks for any help

WW

Re: [XP] Getting space back after reducing System Restore

You can delete all but the most recent restore point. I'm on a Windows 2000 PC right now but if I remember correctly it's :

Disk Cleanup/Advanced/Delete all but most recent restore point.

Sorry, can someone confirm the path mentioned above. Not sure where to go for this. Don't see it.

Thanks

start>all programs accessories>system tools>disk cleanup>then select the disk you want to cleanup then click ok. Then click the more options tab at the top.

For XP:
Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Disk Cleanup-->Select Drive-->More Options-->System Restore-->Cleanup-->Yes

Re: [XP] Getting space back after reducing System

You can define the amount of space used by system restore which will impact the number of restore points available at any given time. I don't think you can mark a restore point for permanent retention.

I suppose it's possible although highly improbable that a restore point three years old would be available for restoration purposes.

I'm unsure but I think a restore point is created every day and when updates are applied to the system so if this machine you speak of was powered down for a couple years I guess it would be possible.

Would I use such a restore point? Not a chance.

Then again I use Norton Ghost which is my version of system restore

Re: [XP] Getting space back after reducing System Restore

no!!! They do not have the MS patch that fixed a bug in WinME ans system restore
»support.microsoft.com/default.as···ct=winme
The dates on the calender for system restore will be wrong. MS says it will fail when trying to restore, but I have seen it do a good restore.
So, no it didn't go back 3 years, the date may look like it did but it really didn't
