Re: [wireless] WRT54G and WPA problems!

Okay, the problem is most likely related to the Wireless Router then. More troubleshooting...

My linksys router and wireless adapter were running fine with WEP. I decided to upgrade to WPA and am having a problem.

After configuring the router for WPA-PSK, I downloaded and installed two microsoft patches for WPA (815485 and 826942) on my PC running XP Home. Rebooted.

Then, using the Wireless Zero Config utility I tried to set up a new connection. However, the choices listed in the Network Authentication dropdown (on Wireless Network Properties page) were still just "Shared" and "Open".

I thought that all I needed to do was install the WPA patches and XP's Wireless Zero Config would be ready for supporting/configuring WPA.

My PC has a Linksys WUSB11 v2.8 on it (according to Linksys, the WUSB11 v2.8 supports WPA). I have the latest driver installed.

This appears to be more of a problem with Wireless Zero Config, or more likely pilot error on my part.

Any ideas on what could be causing the Network Authentication dropdown to be missing the choice for WPA-PSK?

Do you have the boxed checked to "Use Windows to configure my wireless netowrok settings" ? If so, if you uncheck it maybe the Linksys Utility will let you configure WPA ?? My last guess would be that the driver DOES NOT support WPA. But since it was issued in August »www.linksys.com/download/vertxt/···_ver.txt, you'd think it should.

The WUSB11 is not on the list for WPA...

Looks like wi-fi.org also doesn't think the wusb11 is certified for WPA:

yes, I've been having the exact same problem as well. I'm using a WRT54G with WPA PSK enabled, and my laptop has built in 54g (made by BroadCom). I would have a connection for the first 30 seconds or so from boot up, and then my connection would just die. The only way to restore it, was to disable my connection (which read alive), and then renable it. At first I thought it was my firewall which was causing the conflict. This is pretty annoying though, any ideas on how to fix it? Maybe something concrete?

Q: Do you have multiple user accounts set up on WindowsXP - or do you just boot to a single account?

I am still working on this issue. It doesn't appear to be a problem with the router since I do not experience the same kind of disconnections on the PCI adapter card in my desktop. It only occurs on my Notebook adapter card. (All Linksys 54G products by the way).

@mo24.xx.98.xx.charte

I have the exact same WPA prolem mentioned by Taiguy. I would estimate it to be closer to 1-2 min before my link going south. Disable/Reenable the NIC and all is well until I reboot.

It's quite frustrating. I haven't been able to get a clear answer as to whether this happens with other brand products or not.

Of course Linksys tech support is no help at all.

Had the same problems. Disabled the wireless zero in hopes that the Linksys monitor would kick in...no such luck. Couldn't connect at all. Finally had enough and downloaded the Odyssey (3rd client software) by Funk...turned off wireless zero permanently.

Haven't had any disconnect problems. I guess until the problem is resovled between wireless zero and WPA, this will work.

Does anyone have any idea how I can lower the signal on my WRT54G (linksys router)? I've read on the forum about people decreasing their signal so that it doesn't "leave the house". Can't figure out where to find the proper setting to tweak.

Thanks

Look for post about hacked firmware. With that you can increase or decrease the signal strength.

OKay, nobody answered my question. I think I may have it narrowed down to a problem with multiple user accounts in WindowsXP (or fast user switching) If you are having the disconnect issue where after a few minutes you can't reach your network or the internet even though the Windows Wireless Zero Config Utility says you're still connected - please post if you are using multiple user accounts where you boot and have to log-in to the computer before going to your desktop.

dtaylor, are you using Odyssey with WindowsXP or another OS? To my knowledge I wasn't aware that Odyssey would work with WindowsXP.

I do have multiple accounts set up and have to log into my administrator account with a password. The other users have the same disconnect problem, they do not have to log in with passwords. This occurs whether they do the initial boot up, or if I'm still logged on.

yes, I'm using XP. Just so you know exactly what I'm using, here is the link......

I've downloaded the demo and the little black ship shows up next to the time on my screen. I've disabled the wireless zero.

I really thought that it was strange that I could never manage to get the linksys lan monitor to work, or even appear. Just finally got tired of the nonsense and saw a post that mentioned odyssey.

Thought that it couldn't hurt, and might help. Of course I haven't paid for the full version yet, so we'll see how this 30 days goes.

I also have multiple accounts that we log on to to access our laptop which is wireless, using wpc54g card that is about 30ft from my wrt54g router. When I log on it connects fast then after about 3 minutes it drops off, it shows I'm still connected with an excellent signal, but I can not open a webpage, let it set for about a minute then it connects and I can surf. This will happen every so often, running xp on both machines SP1, and upgraded firmware. I've just been living with it,can not find any interference, I have 900mz phones, running wpa with mac filtering....................dig

Wireless Guru asked about disconnects and multiple user accounts.

I have the exact problem discussed, namely right after boot and login, I have a good connection that lasts from 1 to 5 mins. Then the connection seems to die, even though all other indications seem to show the connection is just fine. I've been disabling/enabling the connection to get it back. From then on, it seems to work just fine for many hours.

I'm using WinXP Pro on a Dell laptop with a TrueMobile 1300 NIC and WAP/PSK security. WRT54G AP.

I've installed the latest MS Wireless roll-up patches, and I think my NIC driver/firmware is up to date.

It would be great if we could track this down. Perhaps monitoring the traffic with a second host (kismet/netstumbler).

I have posted messages in the MS wireless networking newsgroup on this issue. I found a work-around by making the Key Renewal period very short (the lost connection after boot-up would renew itself after the next key renewal period).

I can now do better than that workaround. Someone (thanks Alex) sent me a registry fix which seems to resolve the issue (he calls it a workaround, I think it's a fix):

>> This will solve your WiFi problem! although this
>> should be considered a workaround,
>> rather than a fix. With AuthMode set to 2 it means
>> Machine authentication only.
>> Whenever a user logs in, it has no effect on the
>> connection. 802.1X authentication is
>> performed using machine credentials only.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EAPOL\Parameters\General\Global]
"AuthMode"=dword:00000002

Peter
