Multiple cable modem

I am wanting to have a lan party and I was wondering if my friends could bring their cable modem from other parts of the town all on charter pipeline and it still work. Will there cable modems work in this scenario at my house.

thanks!

it might get a little messy if you have all those modems on the same network, otherwise in thoery they should all be able to connect. Ive never heard of anyone trying that though.

The modems should work just fine as long as you all are registered on the same UBR. Go ahead and try it, it will not hurt anything at all.

No ...a UBR feeds a node(s)

Uh, cya Mom and little sissy. Gotta go to Spikes house for the lan party... By the way, I'm taking this cable modem thingy... you're cut off from the internet until I get back from the Halo all night deathmatch...

Multiple cable modems - go right on ahead!

I do this for lan parties all the time, in fact yesterday I just moved my cable modem to a friends house for a Thanksgiving lan

When you hook everything up, make sure to check signal levels (»192.168.100.1, -15dB downstream min, 55dB upstream max) -> and remember splitters add extra loss. Just note when moving a cable modem it might take a bit longer than normal to sync up.

The reality is, normally you don't actually *need* extra modems for a lanparty. Most games use very little upload. For first person shooters 4-6 people is about the max you can get on 128kbps upload. If you play RTS or MMORPGs they use even less bandwidth. One nice advantage of having a second modem however is to force anyone who wants to run P2P apps on the extra modem, because that *will* affect pings.
