I live in the Forest Park South East neighborhood near the intersection of Kingshighway and Oakland. I am just a little more than a stones throw from the area Charter office. They do not offer pipeline in this area. ("Try back next month") So I'm left with SBC DSL. Great. right? When I lived in Shrewsbury, I had SBC and had very acceptable speeds, for my purposes anyway. Unfortunately, that has not been the case at my new location. I was only offered the 384/128 option, and the actual speed over five months or so has been closer to 196 down, never over 220. 384 would be bad enough but 200? And 100 and up pings to boot.
I had no idea wireless could provide the speeds advertised at your site and at VERY competitive prices it appears. Unless there is a provider offering similar prices in this part of the city already (please tell me if there is!), I think you could do well in the city's central corridor, regardless of the availability of DSL or cable. |

| We cover that area with our University Club access point at Hwys 170 and 64.
The one thing that is especially nice about fixed wireless is that it can reach farther distances than DSL, generally five to eight miles. Our network is currently capable of speeds up to 54 mbps, surpassing cable speeds.
The problem that we do have with fixed wireless is the fact that it requires line of sight (LOS), however we do use a technology that is no line of sight, but can only reach distances of up to three miles. This does give us an advantage in the St. Louis heavily treed areas.
Most WISPs build their wireless network as we have, with fiber, so basically the radios are used to bring the end user a fiber network which is far superior than any DSL/Cable could ever be. -- »www.AWirelessGateway.com |
