| New cookie from DSLReports
I am not sure whom to ask about this, but I have noticed a new cookie, called SaneID, being set by this web site. It seems to have an IP number in it. If this is supposed to authenticate me, it is not a good idea, since my IP number changes every time I make a new connection with my provider. Also, I am having to log in every day now in order to be recognized. What is the point of the cookies, if they cannot be used to recognize me any more? I doubt if an IP number is the most secure way to authenticate somebody anyway. |

| reply to Curiosity It's possible that in one of the formus somebody hot-linked an off-site graphic that had its own cookie.
It's happend a couple of times to me.
Check you browser's configuration and see if you can limit cookies to the "original web site only."

| reply to Curiosity The cookie does not appear to be from this site -- I certainly don't have one. I would block all third party cookies -- however, if you have DSLR in your Trusted sites and you are getting a third-party cookie from something posted on the site, then you will have to use an XML Import file. |

| I do block third party cookies. I also default to blocking any cookies with my proxy, but I make some exceptions. This cookie apparently is from this site. Funny thing is, the other two cookies say they are from domain: dslreports.com, and this one says it is from host: www.dslreports.com. |

| reply to Curiosity That is hard to argue -- or, at least I have never heard of a site faking the Domain -- that would make the cookie useless, wouldn't it??
I only have the one "dslreports.com" cookie with two "crumbs" or sub-keys (bbruid and dsl). I checked several computers that I use and there is no cookie from "www.dslreports.com". Strange. I don't have a good answer. Justin?? |

| reply to Curiosity I don't seem to have that cookie, but the only explanation I can think of is for it to remember your last IP as it warns you when you change IPs on login.
The other cookie remembers your login.
I'll shoot Justin an IM with this link and see what he has to say.... -- Thank you for choosing SBC Internet Services. My name is Rick. How may I help you today? |

Isn't from us.
Tell you what, I promise to post advance warning in the security forum before adding any new cookies to the site. |

Sorry, I chucked it, and have not gotten another one. I am now being remembered here, anyway, so I'll just set up a filter to block that cookie if it gets in again. |
