| reply to Air WAV We felt like some might respond as you have, CrankBait, thinking this is a marketing ploy.
However we also felt that some might respond in appreciation, to the fact, that we could offer an alternative to dialup in an area that has been undeserved by DSL and/or Cable.
We would actually be willing to spend our dollars to make sure these folks had service, if we could provide it.
As your tag suggests, you are fortunate to have DSL.
A lot of the the folks in the St. Louis area do not have broadband services that you currently enjoy.
All we are simply trying to do is offer broadband where DSL and/or cable does not extend their facilities to everyone.
This "dead zone" area could be figured by a CO and distance, but that is not always the case. From our marketing studies, there is no true distance from the CO that is measurable, with the exception of limited distance under 1.5 miles.
I am truly sorry, I certainly did not mean to cause any anguish, Please forgive me if you felt this was inappropriate.
I sincerely apologize.

Could you use this site, and view the CO's in the area your looking at, and just target the RED, "DSL Dark" area for your towers. I know this won't help with cable, but it could point in you the right direction.
I know we offer service out of a # of CO's in this area. but your right on distance, since it is based on wire distance, not as the crow flies.
I have no problem with what you are trying to do. Wireless in some areas are the only option, the way technology is today.

That is the entire problem. When I map out the coverage area (I am using MS MapPoint and DeLorme TOPO) and then I input the address into my data base that has the cross street directory it generally turns out to be fifty percent accuract. Folks that "should" be able to get DSL, cannot and yet others that one would think they are distance challenged can get it...
It also seems to me that the CO listings are fairly stale as to what is actually collocated in their facility.
Is there anyother way of finding out exactly what type of DSLAM is located in that facility? Maybe that can help out on this equasion.
One would think that there could be logic to something as distance sensitive, but I am having trouble doing the math...;) -- »www.AWirelessGateway.com |

| reply to Air WAV I live in the Forest Park South East neighborhood near the intersection of Kingshighway and Oakland. I am just a little more than a stones throw from the area Charter office. They do not offer pipeline in this area. ("Try back next month") So I'm left with SBC DSL. Great. right? When I lived in Shrewsbury, I had SBC and had very acceptable speeds, for my purposes anyway. Unfortunately, that has not been the case at my new location. I was only offered the 384/128 option, and the actual speed over five months or so has been closer to 196 down, never over 220. 384 would be bad enough but 200? And 100 and up pings to boot.
I had no idea wireless could provide the speeds advertised at your site and at VERY competitive prices it appears. Unless there is a provider offering similar prices in this part of the city already (please tell me if there is!), I think you could do well in the city's central corridor, regardless of the availability of DSL or cable. |

| We cover that area with our University Club access point at Hwys 170 and 64.
The one thing that is especially nice about fixed wireless is that it can reach farther distances than DSL, generally five to eight miles. Our network is currently capable of speeds up to 54 mbps, surpassing cable speeds.
The problem that we do have with fixed wireless is the fact that it requires line of sight (LOS), however we do use a technology that is no line of sight, but can only reach distances of up to three miles. This does give us an advantage in the St. Louis heavily treed areas.
Most WISPs build their wireless network as we have, with fiber, so basically the radios are used to bring the end user a fiber network which is far superior than any DSL/Cable could ever be. -- »www.AWirelessGateway.com |

| reply to Air WAV Well I need to see if I can get out of the 1 year contract with SBC. I just used their speed test for throughput and got 165/105 and I just don't think I should be paying 40$ for that, when I was paying the same for speeds four times that from the same provider. Ive got a pretty high roof on this brick oven and if I can get anywhere near the 1540/128 from you, I'd switch in a heartbeat. Expect to hear from Carey on the 45 block of Oakland soon, for a free site inspection. I'll be calling SBC in the morning, and if its possible to get out of this contract due to the less than 50% advertised speed, I'll be calling you guys afterwards for the inspection. I'm hoping this is just what I've been wishing for. I was seriously considering moving again.
edit: I just re-read your post and noticed that you said you transmit from the University Club. Thats a pretty good distance from Kingshighway/40 and I do believe the land rises some between us, near the Hi-Pointe and the Dorchester on Skinker. Whats your 'gut' feeling on your ability to get me fast service? |

Your distance is not the problem, you are approximately 4.5 miles from our access point. Actually the land rises at Bellevue and Clayton Road to 602' elev. and in your area the elev. is approximately 500' our elev at the U Club is 550' There are a couple of things you have to add into the math, one is the fact that the U Club is 460' AGL (Above Ground Level) so our actual elev. is 1010'. Secondly, there is the unknown of the height of your building.
With fixed wireless we work with a factor called Fresnel zones, the path sort of looks like a football. We have to calculate (I use this: »www.ydi.com/calculation/fresnel-zone.php) distance from point A to B and verify that we do not breach the second layer of the zone.
My Senior Wireless Tech lives in that area and we are going to be setting up his wireless in the next week, I can let you know how that goes or you can IM me with your exact address and height of your building and I can give you a more accurate opinion.
However, if it were just the distance I could get you up to 10 mbps, but who needs that kind of speed -- »www.AWirelessGateway.com |

| reply to Air WAV Now I'm getting excited. I will IM the address but don't know the building height offhand. Its one of those 2 story (nearly) flat roof jobbies that you find so frequently in the city. Its got what appears to be 10 ft. ceilings. I'd guess about 25 ft. or so but I'm horrible at guessing. It sounds like you're pretty confident that you can reach me so I'm definitely willing to at least try. It would be 10$ more per month but if I could get speeds at least twice as fast as my current DSL (see above), I'll switch as fast as you can switch me.
