If it's any help, I have it from a reliable source, that the reason that Comcast insists on you using their equipment for HN plan is because this equipment that is manufactured by Linksys for Comcast and has back doors for tech support and network trouble shooting. This would allow Comcast access to your entire network. I have this from a manager from Comcast and I was just discussing this with them over the weekend. You may want to confirm (if you can) with Comcast whether or not this is the case? |

| That is pretty close to what one of the reasons are. Comcast does have access to remotely change the settings of the router itself, but in no way can they see what machines are on the router or anything like that. Those back doors are needed for the people who have no clue on how to network so that the tech can just go in change the settings and then tell the customer to have a great day. But otherwise yes, you have to take their modem/router combo, or you won't get the speeds for that price. |

| reply to JeepMatt Any modem on the Comcast network will accept the 4500 download 384 upload config file. However, it is a simple matter of Comcast not even considering to send the config file to customers who did not elect the HN package, and/or do not have a pro account.
I have had the pro account since it was initially offered. 3.0/256 and now its 4500/384 in my area. So there is no need for me to get the HN package.
BTW: I pay $20 bucks per month for the enhanced pro line and full tv package including VOD w/ 1/2 price PPV.

| I am trying to get up to speed (no pun intended) on the Home Networking option. I am in Seattle, so I don't think it's available yet. I have an extensive wired/wireless network already in my house (who doesn't) and my Microsoft routers are working great. What I'd like to do (and I want someone to confirm) is to get the HN option and just plug my existing MS MN700 router into the Linksys device, and then place it in the DMZ. I then would to all of my own admining via the MN700. Would that work? I see a lot of people discussing plugging their router into the Linksys.....but I can't seem to get confirmation that it ACTUALLY WORKS...thus bypassing the 5 IP address limitation of HN.
Thanks. |
