| Home Networking is ON!
Tech just left from setting up the new Home Networking Option.
To answer your questions, YES - you do need to rent their equipment - it's the only way to download the correct config file.
It's a cool Linksys Wireless Router / Cable Modem - i'll take a pic of it when i get home from work tonight (i'm already late!)
Here's my first speed test - not bad for 4.0 down 384 up!
2003-11-11 09:20:52 EST: 3847 / 360 Your download speed : 3847990 bps, or 3847 kbps. A 469.7 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 360230 bps, or 360 kbps. Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier! -- "The rules of applying cologne: Spray, Delay, and walk away!" |

| Damn comcast really wants their customers to use their equipment, Isn't it just better to get a router and modem and bam instead of going with their home networking option? -- -Sonic Thunder Powered by: Verizon Online DSL @ 1525/136! |

| But then you'd be able to use your own router. I think that's what Comcast objects to. They'll only support their router, which seems reasonable. But for some reason, they'll only push the HN config file to the router/modem combo you get from them. (at least I'm pretty sure that's the HN deal works) |

| That's basically what they told me when I called.
Well, maybe if they don't get a large enough turnout for HN, they'll start letting people use their own equipment. I would guess that most of the people willing to pay the additional bucks for HN aren't the type who will need Comcast support beyond making sure that the signal reaches the modem. |

| I've owned my own Surfboard for 2 years - and I have / had no problem giving up and renting from Comcast. I'm not sure why some people are SO against it.
Besides - I was paying $95/mo for Pro, now i'm paying $57.95/mo for Home Networking.
PLUS - 1st 3 months are discounted to $40.95! That was a nice surprise this morning!
Thanks to Scott the tech for an awesome job this morning! The system was being stubborn and wouldn't sync with the new modem - but he stuck it out - got my account rebuilt, and BAMM!
PS - JT, I started a NEW job a month ago - not up the ladder enough yet to telecommute -- "The rules of applying cologne: Spray, Delay, and walk away!" |

Oh I'm not against it I just wanted to know why are people going with their Networking option, but now I see it's cheaper for you, so I guess thats a good reason -- -Sonic Thunder Powered by: Verizon Online DSL @ 1525/136! |

| reply to drake Is your aunt getting HN speed, or upgraded silver speed?
Lots of people have their own modem and/or router (when I subscribed, I had a rented modem with two routers daisy-chained), but I don't know anyone who has their own network with Comcast's HN subscription. |

She is getting good speed with the normal Comcast Package, I don't think her area has been upgraded to 3Mbps/256kbps yet I have to check. -- -Sonic Thunder Powered by: Verizon Online DSL @ 1525/136! |

There's the difference. I have not been paying for Pro, only the standard package (I felt/feel that Pro was too high priced).
Since you were able to cut costs by going to HN, it certainly made sense to do so. I would be paying more to upgrade to HN. I'm willing to pay more but, I am totally unwilling to be forced to buy/rent equipment that I don't need and I certainly don't want them monkeying with my existing network setup.
Enjoy your savings. |

| reply to JeepMatt Then it becomes and issue that in addition to the monthly fee, you have to pay the rental fees or pay $200 for the gateway. Makes getting an extra 700/128 (unless they're adding the overhead to the 4Mb plans) not really worth 50% more a month plus the reported hefty install fees if they force you to have professional installation. -- Don't get it, demand it! | reply to JeepMatt Do you have access to the config of the router...I'm wondering if you can turn off the wireless portion say for cases where you have an existing 54g network or another router. -- Don't get it, demand it! The Anime Network »www.theanimenetwork.com/index.html |
