| Whats Going On In Knoxville TN!!?? For that last few weeks I have been having a terrible time with my Charter connection in Knoxville, TN. It takes up to 10 minutes to download 5 email messages (without any attachments) and when I try to connect to the internet, it takes forever to connect. Many times I get DNS errors or the page just starts to load and never finishes. Charter suggested that I had a bad NIC which I replaced to no avail. Even reformatted my HD and reloaded XP (I usually do that every 6 months anyway) and no improvements. It also does it for my other computers at home whether I connect through my router or connect them individually to my modem (SB4101). I have also tried resetting and rebooting my modem several times to no avail. Interestingly, i tried speed test which reports better speeds than I'm supposed to be getting: (Bronze Pkg) Free test: Results Speed 369.3 kilobits per second
Communications 369.3 kilobits per second Storage 45.1 kilobytes per second 1MB file download 22.7 seconds Subjective rating Not bad
Explain results Info Date & time Sunday, November 2, 6:01PM* Test type IDT4 Free Connection type Cable Region Tennessee Data size 605KB IP address 24.158.xxx.xxx Provider Charter Communications
* CST (-0600) Test again Cable connection in Tennessee
Comparison Your speed Cable in Tennessee average (1.99 Mbits per second) T-1 maximum (1.54 Mbits per second)
Speed 369.3 kilobits per second
Communications 369.3 kilobits per second Storage 45.1 kilobytes per second 1MB file download 22.7 seconds Subjective rating Not bad
Explain results Info Date & time Sunday, November 2, 6:02PM* Test type IDT4 Free Connection type Cable Region Tennessee Data size 605KB IP address 24.158.xxx.xxx Provider Charter Communications
The one other thing that upsets me is charter sent me a letter stating that they were upping my bandwith to 1.5mbps until march 2004 as a way of saying thanks for being a loyal customer. Had that bandwith for about a week now it's gone.
Stan Gunn, any suggestions? Anyone else?
Thanks.

| Re: Whats Going On In Knoxville TN!!?? What are your modem signal levels? You might want to try changing your DNS servers to see if that resolves the problem. Also, check your NIC's DHCP lease time. If it is set to renew your address in one hour, that may indicate maintenance going on in your area. -- If first you don't succeed, try sucking another seed! | |

How Do I check the NIC's DHCP Lease Time?
BTW, it took 11 minutes for this page to load!! All other computers on my network are turned off too.
Thanks for your reply.

| Re: Whats Going On In Knoxville TN!!?? You go to your LAN properties in the control panel. Check the box to "Show icon in taskbar when connected." Right click on that icon in the task bar and chose status. You will have two tabs. Select the second tab and hit advanced. It will tell you your DHCP lease time.
This is, of course, you are not using a router to maintain your connection. If you are, then look at your router's connection status and see when it is due to renew your address. -- If first you don't succeed, try sucking another seed!

| There is a node optimization project in progress...this occurs on the external plant and only affects neighborhood by neighborhood so no one would have adjusted lease times at the headend. Otherwise, there is no scheduled maintenance for this evening. | |

| You should be getting 2 meg down now as our area has been upgraded to everyone getting 2000/128.
Have you tried resetting your modem? (Sticking a pin thru the little hole on the back. When you do this the first three green lights and the bottom orange light will flash)
If that does not work I would ask for a service call.

Did not have a connection for most of today. I checked the cable run from the splitter outside my house into the room that my modem is in (About 6 feet) and all connections are clean and tight. Latest speed test showed 346kbps (45 down) which is good but whats funny is that it takes so long to connect to many sites and pages...dsl reports included. For instance, when I clicked on the link for my post, it took several minutes for the page to load.
Tried resetting the modem by unplugging first and plugging back in, then tried resetting with a paper clip. No improvement. I think I'm going to bring my modem to the Farragut office and ask for a new one since I'm leasing this one from them.
Thanks for all the answers so far.

Spoke with Charter HST rep today and he checked my modem. He stated that my modem was not properly provisioned. After a couple of minutes and a reboot I now get 1.6mbps.
Happy Again!!

| I had DNS problems in Kingsport, with the solution being I *finally* got a new DNS address from Charter Tech. I plugged that in as a hard coded address, not DHCP, and no more problems.
However, I had called 6 or more times over the previous months to get things fixed, and they blamed it on: My router, my signal strength, my modem setup, and well it is working now!
Keep calling - they will get it fixed eventually. Your speed to Charter's mail and Web pages should be *very* good, if not, call them everyday to complain - Remember the squeaky (not obnoxious) wheel gets the grease!!
