 [help] OPTIMUMVOICE WORKS GREAT

After being real scared to change my phone line I have to say OptimumVoice works great. The cable guy came to the house swapped out my old modem gave a new one and away I go. Also if you unhooked the Verizon wires at the demark and run a telco line from the modem to a current phone jack in you house it will now give service to the entire house all of your prewired phones.... Good going Cablevision.

p.s. for people worried about the reliable service just think most of the cable plant is now FIBER to your neighborhood....Verizon is still copper!!!!!

Verizon uses copper for a reason. It's better. You need Copper to get 56k speeds and DSL AFAIK. I had a fiber line and was told I couldn't get DSL because of it. I got a friend of mine from verizon to switch me to a copper line and boom, I magically started to connect at 48k/sec and got DSL a week or two later.

That being said, how fast is OV in terms of a dial-up connection? Just wondering if it connects at the full 48/56k/sec.

you can't get OV without have OOL(optium online) so you would have a super fast connect and a phone on one modem. OOL is a 100 times faster i am getting speed about 8.5 mb/s per sec. and about 1.0 mb/s per sec. I think that faster than a T1 line coming in the house which is about $500-$1000 a mouth for $45-$50 get OOL it will change your life.

How does OV send what you say to the other person you're talking to? it has to use some upload even if its small amount.

i didn't say it doesn't upload, just doesn't use any of your 1mb cap.

OOL and OV uploads use a different frequency. Kind of the same why you can watch iO and have it not affect OOL.

He said that it uses some of your OOL speed. And you replied that it doesn't use any upload. You confused what he said, and according to E88 it does use your download and upload speeds, just not your upload cap, »optimum voice and internet speeds .

no, no, no...I meant if you dial-up for whatever reason, theoretically, how much speed could you get?

Yes it does.

OV shouldn't slow you down much. An active voice connection uses less than 100kb/s, and that is not deducted from your caps

All I can say is this:

If your upload cap is 1 Mb/s and you make an OV phone call, your upload cap is still 1 Mb/s.

If your upload cap is 1 Mb/s and you make a phone call using an external SIP adapter, your ability to upload is 1 Mb/s including the SIP call, in other words around 875 kb/s remains for data use.
no, it does not.

Well he needs to tell it straight, two different threads and two different answers. But I have been using the same modem that OOL has for a few months and it does in fact take away from your speeds, whether you want to believe it or not. The only way it won't is if CV uses a dedicated VoIP modem like this one which Comcast is now going to use, »www.arrisi.com/products_solution···dems.asp .

Copper better than fiber? Sure got that backwards!

On the DSL front, having fiber to your neighborhood means that they can deploy VDSL, a technology far superior to ordinary DSL with speed up to 52Mbit/sec. »computer.howstuffworks.com/vdsl.htm

And on the dial up front, it is having two digital/analog conversions steps, not fiber per se, that prevents 56k speeds. Look at the modem racks at virtually any dialup ISP, and you'll see modem racks connect to ma bell with PRI lines, brought into the building on fiber.

I guess I should have said it better. Didn't think it would get attacked. Copper is better for ADSL, which is the only thing Verizon offers. So, yes, there is a reason Verizon uses Copper, and will use it for a while as I don't see VDSL being deployed to consumers soon (maybe in 3-5 years).

LOL...I didn't mean to attack yea, I was just saying..VDSL would be limited because it can only be deployed to customers below 4,000 ft from CO.

Sorry if it sounded like an attack. That was passion, not malice.

Still can't agree. ADSL on copper is subject to some pretty significant distance limitations. Here, at 21,000 wire feet from my CO, I can't get ADSL at all. With fiber, Verizon could install a remote ADSL DSLAM right in the neighborhood, and since the distance limitation is from my home to the remote DSLAM (rather than a DSLAM at the CO), I'd be able to get ADSL service.

The reason that Verizon uses copper is that most of the phone company infrastructure was built in the days before fiber, and replacing that infrastructure would cost a fortune.

verizon, bellsouth, and all the other baby bells put out plenty of remote terminals on copper loops just fine. No need for fiber to use a remote terminal. A DSLAM is a DSLAM, whether you enclose it in a central office or a gray metal box.
