first tenet of host on a network security: if you want 100% assurance that your system will not be compromised, disconnect it and leave it disconnected from ALL networks...Ethernet networks, Internet networks, telephone networks (e.g., no dialups), or any other. The only exception, if one wants to consider it a network, would be the power "network." If even 0.0001% chance of compromise is unacceptable, this is the only way. Only so much can be done to minimize (but not completely eliminate) risk if one chooses to plug in.
